View Full Version : Pretentious Latin mottos

Hey, one of my characters is moving up in the world, and therefore I figure he need a pretentious Latin motto or two. The character's a healer/alchemist/world saving hero (from the setting's god of undeath) and co-owns a micro nation with his cleric heterosexual life partner. I was thinking something like "The hand that heals, protects/vanquishes/defends" for the character and "Loyalty, wisdom, strength/light" for the nation. The more pretentious sounding the better. It can also sound a bit goofy at the same time if possible, not a completely serious character.

So can any of you scholarly types help me out?

"Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum sonatur."

That which is said in Latin sounds profound.

"Cuius testiculos habes, habeas cardia et cerebellum."

When you have their full attention, their hearts and minds will follow. :smallwink: Yeah, I'm sure you can figure it out.

Well, if we are on the subject of Terry Pratchett:
"No Killing without pay" is probably perfect for a lot of mercenary characters.

Backing away from Sir Terry and his canis latinicus,
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes,
The eternal question of how to stop corruption of authority.
And from, ironically, the flight that didn't make it, Apollo 13's motto,
Ex luna, scientia.
Both are some personal favourites.

One thing about Latin mottoes: the English version is rarely, if ever, a direct translation of the Latin. You sometimes see long English sentences represented by just a few words of Latin.

There are two reasons for that: one, Latin really does take about half as many words to say the same thing; two, people who are translating mottoes are often unbearably pompous.

Maybe even:

My Hovercraft is full of eels!

I also like the Lorem Ipsum generator linked on that site. It produces a few pages of latin-sounding half-gibberish.

That's what Lorem Ipsum is, psuedo-latin text for graphic design purposes.

Yes, I know. Just explaining in case some people don't.

But next time I need a book belonging to a medieval cult or something, I could show half a page or so to my players.

In mihi speradmus. In me we hope. Pretentious in its hubris and reference, being a reference to Brown University's In deo speradmus, or "In God we hope." It likens one to a god and references the Ivy League. That is pretention at its finest, sirrah.
