The camera floats through a peaceful small town. It is night, and the moonlight shines off of various set pieces, such as a church, a supermarket, and a parking lot. Suddenly, an orange blur, a huge crash, and there’s a trail of small craters in the cobblestones. Each one is about two feet across. We don’t see what made them, but we notice a car that’s been torn apart.

Later, the party is in the middle of a junkyard when the abandoned factory starts to twitch. The huge orange arms swing away from the conveyer belt and stretch out until they touch the ground. Then, the entire thing lifts up and begins to scuttle away.

For at least two sessions afterwords, they find places where it has been. Torn-apart steel girders, ruined cars, etc. They will also find the droppings of the creature; piles of toasters, wrenches, etc.

If the party expresses no interest in destroying it, then another faction will oblige. The military, rogue mercenaries, are all possibilities. They should not feel overly sad about this. This encounter will teach them that explosives are the only really effective weapon against the beast. They shouldn’t suffer much against it.

Finally, the party will encounter a rogue munitions factory. It should be fully utilizing everything it produces: Armor plating, huge cannons, and at least one gattling gun. Epic battle ensues.

YES. (so epic it deserves the impact font.) Are you talking d20 Modern, perhaps?

d20 Modern, Iron Kingdoms, or Eberron. This is a beautiful idea.

SLIGHTLY MORE TERRIFYING VERSION: A local necromancer has created a factory where enormous skeletal arms do all the work. He is attempting to clear the name of necromancy and get people to stop thinking of it as inherently evil. He even goes so far as to employ orphans in the factory, thus providing employment for the most impoverished.

At night, the factory works on creating more orphans.
