The Comedians. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-vwkbAZ5Kw)

Lyrics, but it's the way they're sung that makes the songs special.

Personally, I don't reccoemnd music unless you know you can do it right. It can be distracting both for player and GM and doesn't add much in my view.
That been said, Mozart's Requiem Mass in D Minor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d88xIIRDI9U) is suitable as a dirge for a god, the last breath before the plunge into ruin and destruction.

Thank you for your input.
Going more for Violent dark and desperate, less sad. i realize i may have been misleading with Hopeless

i am very aware that it can under some circumstances. Music however is a long running tradition in our groups games. we've had some awsome experiences enhanced by the thematic chords being played in the periphery.

What type of campaign is it? If it's weird enough I can suggest a few ambient pieces, but they're scifi-ish. In case it's classical dark fantasy, take the Dragon Age soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UFgw42IptQ&feature=related).

Also Planescape Torment's Fortress of Regrets theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXv95nrat_s). It's awesome.
More from PS:T (Battle Theme) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvrZgTJAa-c&feature=related).

Other shorter pieces (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Shze_RzMe90&feature=related)which you can use as intros (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QP0BhYtZsM&feature=related) to new areas.

More (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QE6e01BWRs&feature=related)from DA:O (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLap8fMv9PU&feature=related).

Don't forget the Diablo II soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mz9sdLwfuI&feature=related). It has a lot of different settings to choose from; I think this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgdkkG2Jl5w&feature=related) one will do as a campaign theme.

I love music too. It can really set the mood if used in conjunction with low lights and beer

Really you can use a lot of the Battle for Dune music since its all instrumental and has so many different kinds of mood music.

House Ordos works for odd machine like scary music.

House Atrides works well for any kind of heroic music

House Harkonnen is just bad @ss all the way around hard core beatdown music.

Here is my playlist (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsjZG0iZd3k&feature=PlayList&p=2D5C54DF0E774C96&playnext_from=PL&index=0) for it so you can get your own built

And another one is the soundtrack for Second Sight you can get all the tracks from the composer here (http://www.graemenorgate.com/) about 3/4 the way down the page.

My pleasure. Here are a couple more:

Carnage from Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiv5mL28b1g)

More from Ar Tonelico. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTnaxHcujck)

Something a bit more subdued, but still with a tense and evil undertone:
Nuclear Fusion (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=am2YEfPfYjk)

Conan the Barbarian (1982) sountrack. It's really all you need.

I also enjoy the Final Fantasy VII OST.

The orchestral version of Stairway to Heaven is... heavenly.
It's good ambiance and contributes to the fantasy atmosphere.

It isn't dark I guess. And it does feel.. hopeful at the end. But mostly the song feels like its speaking of loss and waiting.

If metal is in, then I'd recommend looking at Therion. A few songs of choice: 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KiSd6XmD8Mk), 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMrpRN4eZ3w&feature=related), 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmnMO7ZuxjQ&feature=related).
If you need something scary or bordering with insanity, then music from Akira movie would be the place to go: 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evcmsR57Xo4&feature=related), 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXjVGN4Xoi4)

edit: I would totally forget about the Vision of Escaflowne: 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSlNHi6wgQQ), 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kr8W3Byixng&feature=related), 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1clgyPLkUg&feature=related)

Here's Non Ho Sonno by Rhapsody [of Fire] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frkelx9v2Ds). It's not really explicitly violent, but it most definitely is dark. One can almost imagine a slow motion epic clash with the dark lord.

Lux Triumphans, also by Rhapsody. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQMs_uuusFY) This is a great deal more tense, though it's kind of short and a bit more triumphant (the title alone is). You might want to cut out the slightly cheesy voiceover at the start though.

I'd also recommend Rhapsody's Queen of the Dark Horizons, but the vocals (admittedly Rhapsody's vocals are quite cheesy) might subtract from the impact of the instrumentals. The chorus is gloriously maleficent, though.
