So far he can get the critrange up to 13-20
I have seen this done better elsewhere, but my search-fu is weak.

I think you mean Disciple of Dispater, that's the one which increases your crit range with metal weapons. Improved Critical and a falchion for a 12-20/9-20 crit range, depending on how it stacks.(Not quite sure there myself)

Book of Vile Darkness Disciple of Dispater level 4 Iron power +1 (double threat range)
Book of Vile Darkness Disciple of Dispater level 8 Iron power +2 (triple threat range)
Improved critical feat - Doubles original threat range

So final number comes out to be 5-20/x2

(they fixed bladed gauntlets to 19-20 later)

A scimitar with the same levels and feats comes to 9-20/x2

stick vorpal on that and your good to go.
