Yet another Pokemon hard mode LP!

Getting on the Pokemon Hard Mode LP bandwagon after being inspired by some awesome ones here.

I'll be playing Pokemon Emerald with the following rules:
1. Anything that faints gets released, including my starter.
2. Can only catch the first pokemon in any given area.
3. Battle mode set to set, so no switching between enemy pokemon changes.
4. I'm not buying any item that isn't a pokeball. Zigzagoon's pickup ability will be allowed, and I can pick up whatever I find on the ground.
5. Anything else that I feel like adding or forgot.

I suppose an introduction's in order. Name's Tobias. I just moved to Littleroot from Cerulean for an internship with one of the leading authorities on Pokemon, Professor Birch. My sister insisted on staying with me for awhile while I "get settled", but she really just wants to sightsee and visit dad.

The professor had sent me a potion, so I withdrew it and then heard sis calling me downstairs.

Apparently my dad was being interviewed. He's a gym leader in the area. Sis told me to go introduce myself to the professor next door to make a good impression.

I was interrupted by some shouting. A little girl was standing by the path out of town looking scared.

She said she heard some people yelling and got too scared to see what it was.

I ran up the path in time to see the silhouette of a man running away and the professor being attacked by a pokemon!

Yeah, I just didn't feel like using her as a mom. She gets like 3 screenshots of time anyways so I don't care much.

It shouldn't be too hard, unless I lose my starter to some random crit at level 8. Which I may have jinxed myself to do.

Actually, I had ben contemplating a light "hard mode" game of pokemon for a while, since I first found out about it.

The inspiration to play Moemon came from the Tohoumon LP here...

and the inspiration to do an LP can be attributed to a few sources: Dark Fiddler's Story of Ash, and a few LPs I found on lparchive.org, namely this LP of Oregon Trail (http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/OregonTrail/), and this LP of Animal Crossing (http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/Animal%20Crossing/index.html), as well as the Touhomon LP already mentioned.

...So, actually, you had nothing to do with me, though I do like yours.

Chapter 2: The Bold and the Beautifly

After a short walk I made it to Petalburg. My dad's the gym leader here, so I figured I'd stop by and say hi.

No one does it on purpose. Items left on the ground are all that remain of trainers that were mauled and killed by wild pokemon.

With my newest pokemon, Shiny, in tow, I kept wandering through the forest. After a few fights, Shiny wrapped itself into a cocoon. It could still fight, so it didn't bother me.

Then this guy shows up.

Chapter 3: The first to fall

First thing to do in Rustboro was beat the gym leader. All my pokemon have a type advantage, and I was feeling pretty cocky. As I went in, I was called to by a man standing nearby.

After I recovered the goods I was given another great ball and a thing called a pokenav. So far all it does is show me a map of the region and take phone calls. As though I had nothing better to do, the president gave me a package and a letter that needed to be delivered.

Oh right. I was still in a fog from losing Gully so I didn't remember. This guy's wingull was being held hostage by the Aqua grunt I beat earlier. Briney offered to ferry me to Dewford as repayment.

I was told the man who needed the letter was in the nearby Granite Cave. I was just going to wait for him, but I was told he could be in there for days, so I decided to flush him out.

I never explained Gaiden, did it? I caught him north of Rustboro, and my pokedex said it was a ninja pokemon with a hardy nature. The first hard ninja that came to my head was the game, so I called it Gaiden.

I've always played "Starter Immunity" in Hard Mode, cause otherwise it's a pain to actually get any pokemans. Specially if your rival whoops you on accident. :smallfrown:

Norman only has two Slakings in Ruby and Sapphire. In Emerald, he trades one of the Slakings for a Spinda and a Linoone.

Norman is also very badass in the manga, which is why he's easily my favorite gym leader of the 3rd Generation.

ahh, i played saphire, so ok. think it went slacking, Vigoroth slacking or something? not quite sure how the battle played out. think i may have had Aron beat the first Slacking very slowly, then thrown all my weaker pokemon at Vigoroth to take him out quickly, healed up my Aron, and sent him out when i saw the second slacking emerge.

that or i had aron fight all three of them, and Vigoroth just fainted quickly.

You're right there, outside of hard mode runs, I actively hate the way the level curve is so far behind any of the other games, and the dungeons are so pitifully small (apart from Mount Mortar, Mount Silver and a couple of other non-essentials)...

I haven't really been doing bad, but that type matchup just happens to rock most of my team and I didn't want to grind anymore. The whole group went up 5 levels or so and I lost most of them.

I don't really remember gold to say if it's the easiest. I think a lot of it matters on when or how you lose pokemon. I'm arrogant about being able to live with 7 hp, so somene using quick attack or fake out kills something and I'm like 'well, it was dumb to leave it in with so little life'.

Magneton's other ability is Sturdy, not Levitate. Which is worse, since barely anything has an OHKO move in RSE, as far as I know. It doesn't get Levitate until Gen IV, and even then it's only in Move form (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Magnet_Rise_(move)).

What Hidden Power element do you have on your Magneton?

Shadowball on Exploud might be nice for Phoebe. If you need to drop a move, I suggest Flamethrower; it's only good against Glacia's Glalies, since the rest of her team probably has Thick Fat. Everything else the Elite 4 have that's weak to fire is also weak to ice anyway.

The best way to figure out your Hidden Power element is to use it on a Kecleon. It will auto change to what ever type your hidden power is. You can find some invisible ones in between the trees at the very top of the route right before you enter Fortree City

Are there any routes you didn't catch pokemon for at the time? Because if there's anywhere you missed, that might be somewhere you could quietly put the sparkle back into your team. Also, are you counting the dive-sections of sea routes as separate from the surface sections?

I'm assuming, bare minimum, you haven't yet caught anything between Pacifidlog and Slateport, and also at the abandoned ship.

Hard mode rules are that you can only catch the first thing that pops up in the area. If you didn't catch it, you can't catch anything else... It doesn't leave a lot of places to be missed...

I thought that was secret power? If I had the chance I'd get it. I caught a clamperl from the underwater part, but I can't trade it so it's not worth using. I honestly don't need another water type, and that's all I'm going to get from dewford to slateport so I figured I'd just raise the ones I already had.

Oh crap you are right. Hidden power is in fortree city. Its the house where you gotta play pick-the-hand-the-pebble-is-in with the old lady. pick it 3 times in a row and she gives you hidden power. as an added bonus, once you get it, you can buy more for 1000 in the slateport seaside market.

Magneton's other ability is Sturdy, not Levitate. Which is worse, since barely anything has an OHKO move in RSE, as far as I know.

Shedinja has become one of my favorite pokemon as of this playthrough. Wonder Guard is totally overpowered.

This was a really fun runthrough. I used a bunch of pokemon I'd have never considered using, and the constant replacing meant that I didn't simply use the same 5 or 6 pokemon the whole game. I'd recommend a nuzlocke run to anyone who's getting a little bored with the series.

Thanks guys, I'm glad you liked it, and I'm sad it ended like that too. I enjoyed the heck outta doing this, even if my story telling skills aren't that great and I fall into me making little quips at the game land. I'm thinking of doing a fire emblem since I had fun with this one, but I'm not sure which one to do. Probably the one with the tactician.

Which game? My Fire Red and Ruby versions both had a seizure when you tried to use the internal Save.
