I'm looking at building a character who's a swashbuckler(or fighter if that seems better) and rogue. I know I want use two rapiers for my weaponry. Ideas? Thanks in advance.

Yeah, take Daring Outlaw [CScoundrel], OTWF and profit. Rogue 4/Swashbuckler 16, most likely. With Craven and Darkstalker and all the usual suspects.

Can you dual wield rapiers?

Can you dual wield rapiers?

Sure, but if you want to do it right you need the Two Weapon Fighting tree and Oversized Two-Weapon Fighting. Then your off-hand rapier is considered light rather than one-handed.

Take levels of Tempest (there are only 5) from the Complete Adventurer and you will have no penalties to fighting with two weapons and some defensive adjustments to boot.

Yes, but at -4/-4.

Two short sswords would be -2/-2, also deal 1d6 damage, and you could still use Weapon finesse. There's a slightly lower chance for critical hits, but +2 to all attacks is much more than worth it.

Seems like it would be easier to just use a short sword.

See my post on how to get around this and keep the threat range intact.

Might I recommend a single level of Cleric? The Travel Devotion feat will go a long way to making TWF better, and the War domain will net you free weapon focus.

I had a nice build for an ECL 16 TWF character that never got played (it was for a PbP game and it fell apart before my guy was introduced. It went something like this:

Rogue 1/Swashbuckler 4/Lion Spirit-Totem Barbarian 1/Scarlet Corsair 2/Warblade 6/Fighter 2

Granted, I built him at level 16, so I'm not sure how good he would be at lower levels. The basic build progression is in the spoiler. He was built to fight on ships, so he's got some skill tricks and stuff that may not be strictly necessary. The basic idea is to use Clarion Commander to give yourself perpetual flanking on an enemy and switch into a stance in the first round and then pounce on them in the second. The build is a little MAD, benefitting from high INT, DEX, and at least a bonus in STR.

Sure, but if you want to do it right you need the Two Weapon Fighting tree and Oversized Two-Weapon Fighting. Then your off-hand rapier is considered light rather than one-handed.
Oversized Two-Weapon Fighting is a good suggestion, changing your dual rapier attacks from -4/-4 to -2/-2, effectively boosting your attacks with both hands by +2 for one feat.

Take levels of Tempest (there are only 5) from the Complete Adventurer and you will have no penalties to fighting with two weapons and some defensive adjustments to boot.
This suggestion I'm not in favor of. You'll need 4 levels of the class to get those penalties down to 0/0. That's a big investment right there, but Tempest also requires 5 feats, or 3 beyond the Two-Weapon Fighting feats you were already going to take. The bang for the buck is weak.

I had a nice build for an ECL 16 TWF character that never got played ... It went something like this:

Rogue 1/Swashbuckler 4/Lion Spirit-Totem Barbarian 1/Scarlet Corsair 2/Warblade 6/Fighter 2 That build is literally impossible to achieve if you follow the multiclass XP rules; see Player's Handbook page 60.

That build is literally impossible to achieve if you follow the multiclass XP rules; see Player's Handbook page 60.

Good point. They penalties were house-ruled out for that game. All the groups I encounter have similarly done so for one reason or another, so I tend to forget they exist. In this case, it was: "full casters are the strongest characters and the multiclass penalties rarely, if ever, apply to them. We'll let non-casters have nice things."

Edit: Actually, it's not impossible, just impractical. As a human, the character counts his highest-level class as a favored class, so he doesn't take an XP penalty until Warblade 3 (Scarlet Corsair is a PrC). At Fighter 1, he takes a 40% 60% penalty, which is the maximum he suffers.

For mjames: would you consider a rapier & short sword (or dagger) combination instead?

So if oversizedTWF would take it to -2, what would ambidexterity do to that? Also, what book is oversized in? I've found everything else?

One of the most often lifted rules, I'd assume, and not unrightfully.

Yes, Ambidexterity is so already included in Two Weapon Fighting in 3.5.

Ahh, that's what I get for having four different books in front of me... Two from each side of .0 & .5 *Big smile*

So from what i'm seeing the best idea looks like OTWF and daring outlaw feats... After that I guess just improving crit range.

[to greenish's question] i'd consider doing rapier/swortsword,but the dual rapier thing was kinda character flavor, and heck almost every movie character that can use a rapier also appears to inherently be able to fight with two at once, always looked liked fun.

You could always fluff the shortsword as a rapier and keep the mechanics in place. IE: A rapier that has a 19-20 threat range. Or talk to your DM and see if he'll allow you to use a rapier in the off-hand at a reduced threat range normally. Or get a keen shortsword which has the same threat range.

Get a Kukri for your off-hand. Because Kukri's are awesome.

EDIT: Just refluff it to be a smaller rapier, if it doesn't really fit the character.

Using a similar theory, the word rapier actually describes quite a few types of swords, nothing says that both would be the same type of rapier. In fact for you sword enthusiasts, i'm thinking more of a spada da lato in the of hand with a classic fencing style rapier in the primary slot

A rapier and a parrying dagger would be a nice. :smallwink:
If you want to use two weapon fighting as a swashbuckler it should be obvious that you have to spend a few feats on being able to do so effectively.

Go with a Grey Elf, take the feat Improved Weapon Familiarity and Weapon Focus: Rapier. Wield an Elven Lightblade and an Elven Thinblade from RotW, your Weapon Focus feat will apply to both and the Lightblade is a light weapon for lower TWF penalties. Daring Outlaw would probably be the way to go, or maybe get enough Fighter or Warblade levels to take Weapon Specialization for Melee Weapon Mastery.

The Thinblade can count as a Longsword or Rapier for what feats apply to it, so maybe take the Crescent Moon combat style feat from CW. It requires you to use a dagger in your offhand, but you get a free disarm attempt every time you hit with both weapons.

I believe there is a homebrew class (not sure if base or prestige) floating over here that might interest you for the purpose of your concept, IIRC Dragoon Wraith was the one who maded I. I will try to find a link.

Edit: Fount it! Here I present you the Dualist (http://wiki.faxcelestis.net/index.php?title=Dualist) BTW that pic Leon posted is also the ilustration of this class :smalltongue:
