So, yeah. The title says it all pretty much, but allow me to prattle on. I have a fair few dollars floating around on iTunes for some reason or another, and have decided I would like to actually spend this money on music, seeing as I really don't need any apps that make bodily function noises all that badly.

So this is where we come to the crux, the nub, the point of the issue: I have absolutely no bloody idea what albums to buy. Now, I am looking for stuff that either

A) I will appreciate because it fits in with what I currently listen to. I will add a list of music I currently own/listen to on a regular basis (including spoken word and comedy albums)

or

B) would be something I've never heard of but would pleasantly surprise me.

Now, to help with keeping this post from being obscenely long, I will spoilerfy my current collection. I will simply list artists, because listing albums would take a ridiculous amount of time.

So, as you can see, I have a varied taste in music, which brings me to my current dilemma... I have no clue what I should grab. If anyone wants to know which particular albums I have from which particular artist, simply ask. I don't own everything by all of them... yet. Cheers in advance to anyone brave enough to give me some ideas.

M.I.A.
Architecture in Helsinki
AC/DC
Led Zeppelin
The Dandy Warhols
The Dresden Dolls
Flobots

Modest Mouse
Scissor Sisters
The Cat Empire

That'll do.

I'd recommend trying out some Hole, some Amanda Palmer, Paul Simon, Neutral Milk Hotel, Paramore, and The Donnas. They have some similarities with some you've mentioned, and're all good in my opinion.

I'll second Cake, Cat Empire, Flobots, and Gorillaz.

Will add...
Collapse Under the Empire, Presidents of the United States of America (that's to you as well Serp, a lot like Cake.), Radiohead (Kid A or OK Computer are the two best), Placebo (Meds first, anything else later)...I can't think of much else that isn't too obscure to not be on itunes or that you won't like.

Also, if you don't have Crack the Skye by Mastodon, get that.

Ta for the recco's so far, folks. Just realised for some reason I neglected to name Led Zeppelin and the Gorillaz in my list. I'm going to blame it on the scotch. I'll edit my post to include them. I completely forgot about Cake. I used to love those guys back in the days of Fashion Nugget. I may have to scoop that one up.

Get the self titled right now! And then Love Everybody. But the self titled is their best.

Mt Eden Dubstep released his album on the internet for free, if you're into dubstep, of course. Many find it an aquired taste. :smalltongue:

Sneak pinched most of the ones I was going to suggest, but I've still got a few tricks up my sleeves!

Dirty Three
The Phantom Band
Four Tet
DJ Shadow
Pheonix
and maaaybe Wilco. But probably not.

*Jimmi Hendrix
*The Monkees(seriously!)
*The Eagles
*Eric Clapton(in all incarnations)

I recommend these groups with albums in parenthesis
*ELO (Out of the Blue)
*Kansas(Point of Know Return)

...

I know you probably won't listen to either of those, or know who they are, but I recommend them nonetheless.

A bit along the lines of Epica and Nightwish: Within Temptation.

Another good group is Blackmore's Night, which play Renaissance-inspired folk-rock.

I know who both are quite well and have listened to both on a fair few occasions. Going over my list and those others have recommended made me realise I don't think half of my collection has been put on my computer, which is where I pulled my list from. Time to go hunting through cupboards and closets for my missing CDs. Still, keep 'em coming, folks. A few bands have piqued my interest so far, but I still have some fake interwebs money to spend.

Serpentine's first reccomendation was also one of the first I was gonna make: CAKE. Listen. Absorb. Achieve Ultimate Power.

Anyways, from your list of lists, I've got some other reccomendations, in no particular order.

Pelican
The Hush Sound
Future of the Left
Adele
Deathmole
Blitzen Trapper
Peter, Bjorn and John
Phoenix
Pomplamoose
Razorlight
Royksopp
White Denim
Vetiver

So hopefully you like those.

Let's see...

Nick Drake - Pink Moon: Nothing to add here, the album will speak for itself.

Fink - Sort of Revolution: One of the best albums from last year, although it took a while for it to grow on me. Like the Nick Drake album it's fairly mellow/laid back. Nothing is Ever Finished ('http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PysNZjtHFzU')

Broken Bells - s/t: An excellent collaboration between the front man of The Shins and Danger Mouse. Vaporize ('http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tstDvkpDlw')

Quantic and his Combo Barbaro - Tradition in Transition: The token recommendation that's outside of your initial list. Not even going to attempt to list all the influences. Linda Morena (Live) ('http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMytywLTS_4) There's a 30sec introduction that's not part of the song linked (Although it is part of the opening track of the album).

Sneak's got himself a solid list of indie stuff so I won't touch on that.

But I would highly
highly
highly suggest Porcupine Tree. They've got something like 20 years on 'em, and their later albums are more metal (but still not all that metal) than their earlier ones, but all are progressive and all are at least pretty good and occasionally reaching up to exceptional.

I forgot one of the greatest of all time-
*Credence Clearwater Revival!
