What book is this spell in ? and what exactly does it do ? From what I hear It turns you into a virtual godlike power, but you die afterwards. Could be awesome spell to keep in reserve for a paladin/sorceror character to save her allies ?

Complete Mage. It's a 9th level Wu jen only spell. It gives you a large amount of damage reduction, spell resistance, energy resistance, several immunities, and a bonus to all saves.

Level 9 Wu Jen spell in Complete Mage, p.120.

Basically, you become virtually invulnerable to most things for 1 rd/level, but you die and are Disintegrated at the end of the duration.

Ninjitsu is strong on these boards

[edit 2.0]You are still vulnerable to an Orb of Force, Solid Fog or any other SR "No" Save "No" spell that doesn't deal typed elemental damage, among other things[/edit 2.0]

It also specifies that your death cannot be prevented by any means. Although, depending on your DM, you might be able to get around this by using the capstone ability of the Jade Phoenix Mage.

If you've got nothing left to lose, blow some XP on a big wish or something. Blazing glory and all that jazz.

Also, y'know, Contingent True Resurrection, or even maybe Dispelling the spell before the time is up.

A dispelled spell ends as if its duration had expired.

Sorry.

Wu Jen 7/Sacred Exorcist 10* (or any combination thereof).

*Or Incantatrix 7, if you don't wanna bother with Divine Metamagic

Feats: Extend Spell, Persistent Spell, Divine Metamagic, Extra Turning (if required).

Persist Transcend Mortality. 24 hour near-invulnerability...yeah, not that impressive by 17th level, and you still die at the end of the spell, but still...

Go Cerebremancer, True Mindswitch before the spell ends. Profit. It's too bad that Transcend Mortality has no offensive benefits though. Greatly cuts into its potential; giving you infinite energy for spells with bonuses to piercing SR and all level-based effects along with some attack bonuses woulda been swell. It's a level 9 spell that disintegrate you so that seems only fair.

There's an FR PrC (Spellguard of Silverymoon?) which lets you cast Personal-range spells on others. Transcend mortality is dismissable. Do the math.

Would iron heart surge work in this case?

Is there an easy way for a Wu jen to turn personal spells into targeted ones?

You could cast it on someone and then dispel it. Since you dispel your own spells automatically, seems like an expansive easy kill... :smalltongue:

You could also Iron Heart Surge at the end of it :smalltongue:

...which is probably another endorsement for JPM.

Would it gain a SR or Will save or anything?

I think I've before heard arguments of specific trumps general in discussions of Iron Heart Surge and this, but I've never heard it clear which is which and thus which wins.

Is there a way to Persist that? (or better, make it last forever?)

Would an AMF 'delete' the spell?

Based on a couple of lines in IHS and Transcend Mortality, I don't think IHS would save you.

That effect ends immediately.

When the spell ends, you are instantly slain and reduced to a pile of dust (as disintegrate).

Emphasis added.
