NeverEnding DM

The air surrounding you fairly hums with the residue of magic, an aftereffect of the spell that brought you to this place. A quick glance reveals that you are in a small room, devoid of any life save for yourself. The sound of dripping water can be heard faintly, and the stone walls are slick with moisture. In complete defiance of logic, a torch is already lit, resting in a sconce near the room's single door.

There is a door at C-4, south side.

Okay, I send my hawk across to C4 first, And I am moving to B3. Assuming no *spontaneous incineration* of animal companion, I move up to the door and search (Taking 20) for a result of 24 or 26 (if Hawk can reach DC 10 with [roll0] ).

You find a door. It's solid, and metal. There's a little indention on the side, about halfway up (presumably to make it easier to slide open).

Cadian 9th
2010-06-09, 12:53 AM
No trap? I'm scared now... :smalleek:

Okay, Horace opens the door, with the hawk flying in to the square on the other side as I open it.

Dante

candycorn
2010-06-09, 01:04 AM
Just to note - if there is a hostile on the other side of a door, initiative is rolled immediately. There's no time for an animal to move beforehand.

In this case, there's not.

When you open the door, you see nothing but darkness.

Cadian 9th
2010-06-09, 01:10 AM
The way duskranger goes on, I was expecting to get nova'd as soon as I toched anything...

Do I roll my own listen and spot?

Dante

2010-06-09, 01:11 AM
You can, if you like. I doubt you'll see much without darkvision or a light source, however.

Ok, so
Listen Check: [roll0]

Alright, I get my flint and steel (assuming I hear nothing) and light a holy symbol on fire, making a makeshift torch.

You don't hear anything of note...

You're aware that there's a torch in the room you started in, right?

Cadian 9th
2010-06-09, 01:22 AM
Berating himself, Horace goes back into the prievous room, dousing the holy symbol torch. He picks up the perfectly good torch, cursing his inability to think past the moment.

I kinda thought it was stuck to the wall
And sorry If I'm being OTT with caution, just really worried...

Cadian 9th

Then, Horace moves into the first square of the room next to the door. The Hawk was there all along. What do I see?

EDIT: Oh, pimplewock. The DMs offline... :smallfrown:

Sorry, I had a technical difficulty with my firewall.
...And if EVERY square was trapped, there'd be no suspense. It's so much more fun when you have to wonder whether it's not trapped... or if the DC is too high for you to discover. ^.^

Your visibility with torch is 80 feet (due to low light vision).

When you exit the room you're in through the door, you're standing in a hallway.

The Hallway runs south and east.

To the south, the hallway goes 30 feet south of your position. At 20 feet, the passage splits to the east. At 30 feet, the passage splits to the east and west.

To the east, the passage extends for 80 feet. 10 feet east of you, the passage splits to the north and south. 30 feet east of you, there is a door on the north wall of the hallway. 60 feet east of you, there is a split to the north and south. 80 feet east of you, there is a door on the east wall, and the hallway turns south.

When you take 20 on search checks, what are you checking? Floors? Walls? Ceilings?

EVERYTHING!
God, tell you what. How bout I summon some creature and send it down the hall to get disintigrated, nova blasted, filled with arrows, then crushed between two walls  (Actually, I'm not doing that, but was thinking.... )

Dante

candycorn
2010-06-09, 02:26 AM
Ok, 2 minutes per floor square, 2 minutes per ceiling square, and 4 minutes per wall (10 feet high walls). That means every square you move down will take between 4 and 12 minutes.

Based on that:It takes 44 minutes to go south 20 feet. When you reach the split west, you see that it goes 10 feet east, and then turns north.

Cadian 9th
2010-06-09, 02:33 AM
Okay, so Send Hawk out to see if anything is around the bend, then continuing checking the ceiling, wall and floor and any other place there is to search  To eventually make it to that north turn. What do I see, some half an hour later?

Dante

candycorn
2010-06-09, 02:42 AM
How is your hawk telling you if it sees something?

It takes 24 minutes to reach that north turn.

The hallway goes north for 40 feet. At 5 feet, there's a door on the east wall. At 20 feet, there is a split east and west. At 40 feet, the passage turns east.

Okay, so search walking, I go to the door, then search that too. Taking 20.

Dante

2010-06-09, 03:18 AM
... I don't think the druid link is empathic. I know the familiar link is, but I don't see anything about animal companions having an empathic link.

12 minutes later, you reach the door, and find no traps.

Cadian 9th
2010-06-09, 03:35 AM
Okay, I open the door. Ready to fight if need be.

3||||B|
4|||||H[/table]
There is a door at A-2, another at E-4, south side and another at E-3. There is a human wearing a chain shirt and holding a longsword standing behind a beast with patchy dark fur that covers its unhealthy shrunken black skin in some places. Open sores dot its hide and a feral, catlike head glances with it's blank eyes at the wall in front of it.

Cadian 9th
2010-06-09, 04:16 AM
Okay, So Horace is going to Speak Nicely... actually, kill first, question latter.

Okay, so I use entangle - standard action, then use my move action to Move away to just on the other side of the door I came throug (so 20ft away) and (assuming they haven't seen me) Hide.

Hide:
[roll0]

JB will move with me and sit down in front of me. (A3)

Dante

candycorn
2010-06-09, 04:22 AM
You'll be caught in the radius of that Entangle too, as well as your bird. You'll each need to make saves.

Oops, I figured that Entangle came in slower than instantly. (I don't suppose I can move before I cast?)

candycorn
2010-06-09, 04:36 AM
You'll have line of effect to wherever you put it when you cast it. It will have line of effect to you.

Entangle has a huge area of effect. It's not meant for tight spaces.

ALright, still hidding, I cast Magic stone from my wand. Move action is to see inside the room. Companion looks around, then acts once I know what I can see.

Dante

candycorn
2010-06-09, 05:40 PM
You and the companion see the human. The beast is no longer visible.

Companion is totally entangled, it needs to make strength or escape artist to move.

It only gets a save if it's not entangled. Once it fails, it needs a check, same as the enemies.

Cadian 9th
2010-06-09, 06:43 PM

Entangle doesn't obscure you. For that, you'd need Web. You don't have cover or concealment. I don't think you can hide.

That said, you hit for 6 damage.

The human's turn.

Esc Artist: [roll0]

You're up. Remember that your bird gets a -4 Dex penalty for being entangled, and you need to make a save again vs entangle.

What kind of trapmaker puts huge bullseye over the floor? Okay. Hmmm. I go back to taking 20 on every search check to check everywhere. WHat the hell, this'll be funner if I don't just piddle around. You need cover or concealment to be hidden. As the orc has darkvision, you have neither.

Even if it were flat footed, you'd have missed.

The orc moves adjacent to you, and shouts, "STEELY STRIKE!"

Attack [roll0] for [roll1]

EDIT: Incidentally, you are currently at the following intersection.

The hallway runs south and east.

South, the hallway runs for 20 feet. At 10 feet, there's a closed door. At 20 feet, the hallway turns west.

East, the hallway runs for 20 feet. At 5 feet, there's an angry orc. At 15 feet, there's a door on the south wall (open). At 20 feet, the passage turns north.

Okay, Deja vu...

Horace picks up the torch, holds his longspear out and taps the floor hard three times before moving into a square. On a side note, I have decent HP so I'm not as worried about traps. So, three hard pokes in each square before moving into it. Thats my movement order.

I search the door (take 20 for 21).

In order to charge, you have to have an unblocked, straight line to the enemy.
