Cogidubnus and DM ONLY

upon entering through the door, you hear a feminine voice say, "Name?"

Hammer Hammer grunts, looking around the room for anything that might suggest to him what the sign on the door had said.

This room is apparently bare except for a simple wooden stool in the center and two doors, the one he just went through, and another on the opposite wall. The voice asks again, "Name?"

"Hammer," Hammer repeats, more loudly.

"What makes you qualified for this job?"

"I am not entirely sure what this job is. I cannot read, so I don't know if there was a sign or..." Hammer says, looking slightly uncomfortable.

The emotionless voice tells you calmly, "You walked through a door where the employer wishes to hire a personal protector, ideally more than one, although he is willing to hire them one at a time. Are you qualified for this position?"

Hammer relaxes somewhat, reaching into his pack for his references. "About as qualified as they come, I dare say. I know how to fight, better than many, and I won't screw you over either" he says, preparing to hand the woman his papers.

I did actually mean to say that. Momentary lapse of continuity.

The disembodied voice says, "Very well. Please proceed through the next door and we will negotiate these things face-to-face."

Hammer proceeds through the door, his resume held in front of him like a shield from angry bureaucrats.

He sees a young woman sitting behind a desk. She seems rather uninterested in her job but dutifully says, "I will now read through your resume and proceed to ask you a series of questions. Please answer them fully and honestly. If you are found to be qualified for this job, you will be hired and may then go to your new employer to negotiate pay. If not, i will politely deny you and ask you to go back to the common room and try another door." She begins to rifle through your resume.

what does this resume say?

Cogidubnus

The resume contains 5 references. The top one was written by a minor king from a country close enough to be heard off, in a flowing golden script, and commends Hammer's service as a member of a team of bodyguards who worked for him a little time back. 3 of the others are from various nobles, whom Hammer served as their personal bodyguard at one time or another, and the final one was written by a merchant whose caravan Hammer helped protect from a serious bandit problem.

She reads through the resume, nothing the various past experiences. "Well, you definitely have quite a lot of experience. Tell me, what role did you serve, exactly, in the team of bodyguards for King Hielt?"

"I was second-in-command of our unit, and one of our martial experts. I made absolutely certain no one got within 30ft of His Majesty, and if they tried, I stopped them. But not so we couldn't question a few of them later."

"Very good. My client is looking for someone of... unique talents. If you can find someone else competent at protection, you and he will both be hired at significantly more than the base pay. You cannot, of course, discuss the specifics of this job, but you may say that you have found an employer looking for another person. If they qualify, you both will start off at an increased wage. If you would rather begin work immediately, that too can be arranged, but you will start off with less of an income. My client is willing to pay extra for a competent team. You may choose to bring up to 3 others with you back to this negotiating table. If you choose to do so, take this." she places an insignia on her desk. "If not, then please sign here." She holds a contract out towards you.

don't worry, i won't screw you over with this contract.

"I'll bring back a team. Maybe a few of my old allies will even be around. Thank you for your offer." Hammer picks up the insignia and turns to return to the tavern. Before he leaves, however, he stops and asks: "Who do I say I'm working for?"

Can I head back to the city streets and proclaim loudly throughout the tavern?

"House Dergrall. Unfortunately, you cannot tell that to any prospective partners outside of this room. You will have to let me tell them once they get here."

yes, you can. but you cannot say more than basically you have a bodyguard contract and are looking for people to help you fill it.

A terrible explosion suddenly rocks the entire city, and the ground shakes as if an earthquake were tearing the city apart. The sky lights up from a blast many times the brightness of the sun, and you are certain that certain death has at last come to claim you. As the brightness fades, you look toward the Mages' Quarter and see the last remnants of the horror burning directly towards the sky in a seemingly endless stream of raw, burning mana which threatens to tear reality asunder. What seems like an eternity passes as you stare, though it is likely only a few seconds, and at last the blast fades away. In the distance, you hear a building collapse, and you are certain that something horrible has been unleashed upon the city.
