View Full Version : Optimising speed

I'm playing a 13th level halfling gestalt rogue/warlock, always in the air with Fell Flight. Problem is, he's slow. 20ft, or 30ft if I turn into a bear with Sentinel of Bharrai (best prestige class ever).

How can I speed him up a little? The campaign has magic airships that go at like 300ft/round, so it'd help.

Get an airship ?

Personal speed. The party has an airship, but it'd be good to be able to keep up with it.

Fell Flight is equal to your land speed. So anything that buffs your land speed before you fire off Fell Flight will increase it.

Expeditious Retreat (or any item that does that constantly) adds 30 feet to your land speed, which since you're a halfling adds 20. And you can take the Air Heritage feat from Planar Handbook which adds 30 to flight speed. (Though it technically only affects RACIAL fly speed, so your DM would have to approve it.)

That kicks you to a base 40 land speed and adds 30 flight on top of that, so you're up to 70.

Air Heritage feat (Planar Handbook?) gives you +30 ft to your Fly speed. I can't remember if it requires a natural Fly speed. If it does, just become a Dragonborn, which will also free up Fell Flight for a better Invocation.

I never thought I'd say this, but start taking Monk levels.

Barbarian, Fist of the Forests, Druidic Avenger, Druid/Wizard/Cleric (cast Expeditious Retreat, persistent if necessary, and profit), some item of Haste (doesn't stack with above) or some such.

Yeah Monk//Warlock that would have been good  Very fast anyway.

Seriously Dip into a class which gives you Longstrider which would give you +10 and a long duration. Looking at Ranger or Cleric here.
Dip into a class which has extra speed as class features. e.g. Scout or Barbarian

Ranger/Scout(Swift Hunter)//Warlock would have been better since this gives you more speed in two ways.

The Travel Devotion (CD) feat allows you 1 extra movment for 1 minute. Might help for short bursts of speed.

300ft/round is pretty fast. 300/4(run) = 75. So a base speed of 75ft would allow you to keep up with the airship. You would still need a way to get a burst of speed on occasion incase you lag behind during a fight (or whatever).

75ft isn't undoable. 30 base + 30 enhancement (custom boots of exp retreat, continuous) = 60ft. Need 15ft more. Quick Flaw +10 (UA:unnamed bonus). Dash Feat +5 (CW:unnamed bonus). Vola! A base land speed of 75ft via RAW.

Unfortunatly Haste is an enhancement bonus so won't stack with those custom made expedious retreat boots.

As already stated you could also consider using racial speed bonuses such as Barbarian or Scout. I believe racial bonuses always stack.

You could take the Run feat for 300/5 = 60ft. This is an easier target to hit.

there is a cleric spell that based on your deity give you different speeds. get a couple scrolls of those and UMD them out the wazoo.

for a cheaper means to do that, hold a wizard hostage

Cleric 3rd level spell, Footsteps of the Divine (SC). This is great if you can persist it!

Barbarian 1, Monk 3, Scout 3. All of these give you +10ft fast movement. They may or may not stack depending on your DM's ruling.

See if you can get Dark(ToM), and Shadow(PH) templates I had a character that had base speed of 90ft, and a fly speed of more then 200ft(Psedodragon).

There is a ranger alt feature that you can exchange your combat style feats for fast movments as a barabrian. I think there is another one that lets you trade something else, I think spellcasting, for fast moment as barbarian. take a one level dip in ranger for +20 speed, then dip into actual barbarian for more!

Get a rope and tie yourself off to the airship.

I remember seing a theoretical charop build somewhere that could go really fast. Something along the lines of setting the ground on fire fast.

It used a Persistent version of a personal buff that gave you bonus speed when you ended the spell based on the remaining duration (can't remember the spell's name). (24 hours - 1 round) * 10 feet = a lot of feet.

Footsteps of the Divine [CChamp]. But it doesn't quite work anymore.

If your concern is just an ability to fly within the airship or nearby for short hops, I would rule momentum as your friend.

This (http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19861942/Chuck_E._Cheese) is the one you're looking for. The setting stuff on fire was from a Desert Wind maneuver.

Out of topic, but I see a flaw in your plan.

Just get a wand of expeditious retreat or a bunch of potions. You won't be able to keep up with 300 unless you get a pet pegasus with horseshoes of speed (if that works, I haven't read it), or take many many many levels of monk.

Alternatively, argue with your DM that speed is relative and you should be allowed to just fly around willy nilly at your speed plus 300.

If your worried about catching up, perhaps a modified Bracelet of Friends?

Really, 300 Ft/round? The oldest and fastest dragons only fly at 250 a round base. Though they can run while flying, and with sorc spells, expeditious retreat for another 250ft a round I think.

hmmm, if you don't get momentum from the airship when using your own flying.
Can you bestow fly/levitate on someone else, and force them to use it in some way (thus being hit by a 300 ft/round airship that they can't outrun).
