Two guards approach Vrishma and Masaya (was Masumi in the area as well? I don't remember exactly). Any villagers in the area will back away nervously.

"Magistrate Takahashi requests your presence in his house."

If you look around to see the magistrate, he is nowhere in sight.

Masya smiles. Of course, I would be honoured.
He turns to Vrishma. Hurry up with these wards, or whatever it is.He turns to Masumi. And your job is to guard him, I don't know what's going on and I won't lose my servants to evil spirits he says, wagging his finger at her. And don't be falling asleep!
He turns back to Vrishma. And tell my other servant I want breakfast prepared by the time I return, or lunch if it is a long time, and I want my bed made, my nightclothes washed, and my clothes from yesterday washed. He better get that wine stain off, the clumsy fool, or its coming out of his wages!
Masaya turns back to the guards. It's so hard to get good retainers these days, they're all too lazy. I know I ought to beat them, but I'm too kind and gentle. Anyway, we mustn't keep the magistrate waiting. He quickly strides off, calling back exasperatedly to the guards well come on, do you want to keep him waiting? Where does he live, anyway?

Vrishma

((Were they talking to all of us when they said we should come, or just Masaya?))

Vrishma's nostrils flare briefly, but then he makes an effort to look humble. I will get you for that, Masaya, just you wait, you do.... Yes, oh most resplendent and benevolent master, I shall go to it briefly, I shall. Would you request our presence afterwards, if we find something to tell? he asks calmly, trying to put on his best human-ish behavior and bows, casting a sly wink at Masumi.

Yes, yes, says Masaya over his shoulder, meet me when I get back for breakfast.
Now hurry up he says to the guards.

One of the guards clears his throat, looking a tad bewildered.

"If there are more people to your group, Magistrate Takahashi would like to see them all. Your stains, I'm afraid good samurai, will have to wait."

((Well, we have someone else coming in. I don't know how we're going to get him involved, but we are currently working on it. Hopefully he'll be joining the group soon))

What! Masaya steps back. But they are, well. Masaya looks at Masumi and Vrishma as if they are no more than insects. They are Heimin. Well, not the lady, but... he puts his hand over his mouth and whispers, she is of very low birth, barely better. He straightens, and fixes the guards with a curious gaze. Why would his excellency wish to waste his time with them? They are incredibly ignorant, not one of them can read or write. They would only pollute his beautiful house with their smells. Masaya puts on a long-suffering look. I wish I myself did not have to put up with these barbarians, but, he says with a martyred expression, it is my duty as their lord. No, they can sort out this shaman business while I see his excellency. I'm sure I would be able to answer his questions myself. Now, if you won't show me where his house is I'll find it myself. He strides off, head back, pouting, the very soul of a man who has been grievously insulted. He accosts the first townsman he comes across.
You, heimin. Where is the magistrate's house?

The_Shaman
2006-10-11, 11:07 AM
As Masaya starts walking, Vrishma curls his lips for a moment. While he manages to keep a smile, or at least a grimace close to it, the look he gives him in the first moment is little less than incinerating, and within his sleaves he has his fists clenched.

The INSOLENCE of this man! By Hanuman's tail, if I turn him into a boar no one would know the difference, indeed they won't! Calm down, now, he probably has a reason to not want any of us there... at least I hope so, I do, for his sake. Well, now, let's see what our Scorpion friend wants to say to the human magistrate, we should. Are all samurai here as full of bluster?

He composes himself and, hoping that with Masaya's antics no one has been paying too close attention to him, turns to the guard and gives him a docile look.

This does not look good for us, alas - the master will definitely not be pleased, indeed he won't. Aaah, he is going to tan my hide again... However, if the Magistrate has ordered us to go to him, his wish must be fulfilled. Our companion is still inside the tavern. Could you at least tell us, he adds quietly, why we are being summoned?

The very low samurai birth woman

Masumi has been rubbing her chin methodically as she looks over the bodies until the guards demand her attention.

But before she can say anything of importance she's cut off by the sneaky Scorpion and you can see a mild look of surprise flutter over her face before her poker face is put back on, watching Masaya the entire time with that countennance and who knows if she's thinking of striking him, yelling at him or just laugh at the affable situation.

However, she strolls up, eager to play along as she passes the guards after Masaya.

Oh dear... I hope Bayushi-sama that you haven't done something naughty again, as with those gamblers or the farmwife...

Vrishma the Smelly

Vrishma looks at Masumi with a faint expression of distaste in his eyes, and when he speaks, there is a mild rebuke in his tone. Now, now, there you go again, miss Masumi, jumping to conclusions. Our lord simply has an eye for the dice, and... well, it was a cold night, that other time.

He looks at the guardsman knowingly, then says Excuse me. I should get the other... er, servant. He turns back and goes back to the inn to get Ikeira ((presuming he's not already here, if he is, Vrishma just goes to him and tells him they are being summoned.))

Masaya looks worried. Look, that was a complete misunderstanding, it's not my fault I'm irresistable to women. And as to the dice, there's nothing wrong with the odd game. It's all a bit of fun! How was I to know that those rogues had spiked my drink, and were using weighted dice!
Masaya turns with a look of anguish to the guards. Oh please, you won't spread this vile gossip, you wouldn't listen to these lying heimin would you? I wouldn't want the magistrate to think I'm an empty-headed fopp!
Masaya then seems to notice something on his right hand. He holds it up, peering at his fingers. A look of shock crosses his face. By the Kami! I've broken a fingernail!

The guards look at each other, at a loss for words.

"Our orders were to get the samurai and those traveling with him, and bring them all to the magistrate. We don't question his orders, we follow them. Now, all of you will follow us."

Without another hesitation, they turn on their heels and being marching down the street.

((I must say, that had to have been one of the most amusing exchanges I've had the pleasure of witnessing. The new guy will be joining you at the house of the magistrate))

(When I read the top bits of Shaman and Tonberry King's posts, saying the names of their characters Vrishma the Smelly and The Very Low Birth Samurai Woman, I couldn't help but laugh out loud)

Masaya gives a very deep sigh, an expression of defeat on his face. Oh, what will become of me? I know these smelly heimin will embaress me in front of his excellency, and soon the news will be all over the Imperial court. I'll be a laughing stock!Masaya runs after the guards. You won't tell the magistrate about what that lying woman said, about the gambling and the girls, will you? I mean, I know you're his loyal guards, and he probably expects you to tell him everything, but I'm sure you can make an exception? I wouldn't want him to think I'm some foolish noble who knows more about partying than fighting. Remember, I am a noble, I'm better than you, so you ought to protect me from your master by not telling him.

Vrishma the Needer of a Thousand Baths

Vrishma simply grins and follows the guards. While he wonders how long this charade will continue, he's actually a little sad they couldn't confuse them a bit more. This would seem like a boring town... Except for the couple that was ripped to shreds, unfortunately.

He shudders, and reminds himself that they should seriously look into this. However, his mind soon drifts to other topics.

Miss Masumi, he nears the woman and speaks quietly, may I have a moment, I ask? I would like to ask you something, I do. Is the path you follow focused only the sword, or have you stepped aside to study the forest's marvels as well?

Cyrus112

"Good samurai, I assure you, I need no help from your "heimins" to convince me that you are a fool noble."

Ozzy_G

Masaya stands back in shock.

Also, just an early FYI (I'll be posting other FYI's from now til November 19th), November 19th I will be incommunicado, awol, mia, however you want to say it. That is the release of the new Nintendo system, the Wii (pronounced we), and I will be busy with it (and the new Zelda) all day long. Just a heads up :P))

(Heee)

Masumi once again feigns indifference at the shaman's request, clearly not about to reveal all of her playing cards to the table before she speaks in a low voice.

Such a curious little monkey... I am samurai, if only in title, which should be enough for you. However, I am rightly curious however over this murder and why the magistrate would want to badger us about it...

Ozzy_G
2006-10-13, 02:15 PM
(Pronounced we? Or wee? Or stick another W on and it's WWii. It's a conspiracy!)

Masaya looks triumphant, and says with a condescending smirk I should think so! I can't abide gossips. I mean, I suppose some would say it's your duty to report everything you hear, but I'm glad you know that duty is sometimes less important than doing what we nobles tell you to!

The_Shaman
2006-10-13, 07:26 PM
((I think it's "Wee" like the rather happy and slightly incoherent sound kids make. It could be just wishful thinking on Nintendo's part...Though if Cyrus disappears for several weeks or more in late November, it might be that they are astute judges of character ;) )

Vrishma

My, my, everyone is on edge today, I say, he muses, clicking his tongue with mock reproach. At least in her case I can think of a reason for the foul mood. Several, even. he cackles quietly. Little? Alas, no respect for their elders, those younglings, no respect at all. Worry not; I meant no offense to your rank or skills - I simply inquired as to where they lay, I did.

Badger, eh? The stray dogs always gets the mean looks in the kennel - much more so when wolves attack... I should get to see the house, definitely I should. The household spirits are bound to have noticed something.

Cyrus112
2006-10-14, 12:13 AM
((Oh, you can expect a full report both on the Wiimote (*sigh*) and the new Zelda. I'm sure i'll be ranting off and on about it for many, many weeks))

The same guard speaks up, teeth clenched.

"You keep that tone up samurai, and I will do more than tell the magistrate about your vain concerns. I don't do things because you say I need to. I don't say anything because I don't wish to involve myself in the vain, stupid, and arbitrary world of Rokugan nobility. The magistrate is waiting inside."

As he finishes, he and another guard stop outside of an impressively sized house and turn around to assume guard type positions in front of the house.

Masaya looks annoyed again, and walks into the house. Once inside, out of sight of the guards, he turns and smiles at Ikiera. He whispers Phew, I was worried there, but it looks like we're fine. I don't think we need to worry, but you should be on your guard just in case. He shoots a dark glance at Vrishma. And if you do all get arrested, don't blame me.

The_Shaman

Vrishma

Vrishma enters the house and once safely out of sight (and hearing, as he hopes) breaks into a large grin. Of course, oh most benevolent and fair maaster, he drawls with exaggerated politeness, then continues quietly. I hope you won't try to remake this charade in front of the magistrate, indeed I do. My people may be lithe in body, but we do not like to bend our backs in spirit, no we don't. Now, annoying the guardsman may be of some merit, but why would you claim that the deaths were caused by demons, I must ask? It's known we come from the shadowlands - if there be evil here, the folk will think we brought it.

Ozzy_G
2006-10-14, 02:07 PM
Masaya whispers Firstly, people don't know where we were, secondly, with claw and teeth marks in the middle of village, and no-one hearing a thing, it has to be demons. Saying it's bandits is ridiculous, it will make them think we have something to hide. But anyway, it's irrelevant, we are going to be fine, as long as we don't come across as suspicious. So you're gonna have to play along with my ruse. The magistrate doesn't suspect us, if he did those guards would be escorting us to see him, but if you act strangely...Masaya gives a shrug. Well, I tried to keep you guys out of it, but your pride made you come. So if I'm wrong, and the magistrate does arrest us, then don't blame me. Masaya sighs. Look, stop obsessing over your pride, and I'll keep us alive.
(Just something for you guys to think about: pride and honour are the hallmarks of a Samurai, the things most important to him. And Samurai do not lie. So this is a rather strange attitude for a Samurai to take, don't you think?)

The_Shaman
2006-10-14, 03:28 PM
Vrishma

T'is a bad thing to say, Vrishma sighs, but people sometimes go out of their way not to accept what they don't want to accept, they do. To this town we are like stray wolves, anything strange and uncommon will likely be linked to us. The more uncommon the culprit, the more people will think of what else has been amiss, they will. Rumors there will be that it was a monster, oh yes, but the fewer people believe it, the better, I say.

He straightens up, and continues in a calm voice,We've told the gate guards where we come from... and they are not statues, always to keep secrets. Should they be honest men, their leader will know as much as they do. As the tricked crow said, looking back maybe I should have kept my beak shut - but we are strange a sight, and lax is the guardsman that would not question us. If you are confident your play will hold with him, I will grit my teeth - but if we all were summoned, then we all were considered of import, it seems to me. A stone that kills a rabbit will only enrage a tiger, my elders often said. If all is well, though, I would we inspect the house, I would... alone, if possible. This murder would incense the spirits, more so if demons spilled the family's blood, I say. They may have much to tell.

((While Vrishma gave Masaya a curious look while he was talking, it's hard to determine if it's due to his knowledge of Rokugani society or because he is usually very animated when talking or being talked to))

Ozzy_G
2006-10-14, 03:34 PM
Well, it's past now. We'll see what the magistrate wants, then decide what to do. If we get a positive reaction, then maybe we can get him to help you, to ask the people to leave the house while you inspect it, or something. Just remember, a spoiled noble and his servants are less likely to be involved in anything dodgy than a mysterious band of adventurers.
Masaya gestures up the hall. Well, shall we go and see him?

The_Shaman

Vrishma

The Vanara cackles and says quietly. Like a fox, a she-wolf, an owl and a lizard, we are. Good luck! Then he adds, louder If you can pass us as a spoiled noble and his traveling companions, Masaya, I would suggest you change your career while there's time, I would. That good with the sword no one can be, i say.

Anyway, yes - it would not do to keep the lord waiting. Yet I'd still prefer "retainers" over "lazy servants," thank you very much. he adds, busying himself with his robe as he tries to make it look more presentable (as in: less worn and dusty).

Ozzy_G
2006-10-14, 07:41 PM
Masaya grins. How about lazy retainers? I spent some time at court, if there's one thing that identifies spoiled nobles it's talking about how lazy the peasantry is. Don't take it to heart. In the arts of deception, pride has to take second place.

(Now that's not something you'd expect a Samurai to say.)

Cyrus112
2006-10-14, 11:06 PM
Inside, one of the servants points you in the direction of the magistrate. Inside a large study, the magistrate is behind his very big, heavy wooden desk, looking over papers, a tired look in his eye. He looks up and sees you all standing there.

"Ah good. As usual, Toshi brought you here quickly. Have a seat. Now, you all saw that gruesome scene out in the square. I'm looking in to all the new arrivals to town over the past few days, and your group arrived only yesterday, if my reports are correct. Would you all care to explain what you've been up to in the past twenty four hours?"

While his tone isn't menacing or angry, it's firm and serious. From what you can tell, he means you no harm as of right now.

Ozzy_G
2006-10-15, 04:18 AM
Masaya gives a bow, slightly deeper than the magistrate's position warrants.
Of course, your excellency. I am Bayushi Masaya, son of Lord Bayushi Otunga. I and my retainers, he gestures at Vrishma and Ikiera, are looking for the sage Genki, and we came here to seek information as to his whereabouts. We came through the main gate, and stayed at the inn from outside which your guards found us, the whole evening and night. There, we hired this woman, he says, gesturing at Masumi to work as a bodyguard, as we intended to leave soon, and we'll need protection from bandits. This can be corroborated by the innkeeper.

Cyrus112
2006-10-15, 06:10 AM
The magistrate gives each of you a penetrating gaze, and doesn't speak for a long while.

"And your whereabouts yesterday evening to this morning? And why are you seeking out Genki?"

Ozzy_G
2006-10-15, 06:39 AM
We were in bed, at the inn. Again, the innkeeper can vouch for us. We came down to eat this morning, and heard the commotion outside. We went to see the bodies, and then your guards collected us. As to Genki, my lord wants his advice on stopping a curse or something. We are going to try and find him, and bring him back to my lord. My retainers have already told your gate-guards about this, when we entered the town.
Masaya keeps his robed arms folded in front of his stomach, the arms of his kimono completely covering his arms. His face gives away nothing - as he is wearing his Scorpion mask. That's why the Scorpion wear them!

A young husky man looking all of 16 will enter the room, his fine yellow silk robes flowing down to the floor. His hair is perfectly pulled back in a ponytail and slicked down. "Mm, I received the report from the gate guards. They seemed to be suspicious that your party was carrying a form of the plague. However, you all look perfectly healthy to me, and if the story checks out with the innkeeper at the...Graceful Crane, I believe?...then you will be free to go about your business. That is all. Oh, if you plan on going to the murder scene to comfort spirits, take my son along. He is young and headstrong, but skilled with a blade, should any sort of need arise."

Masumi for some reason doesn't seem impressed nor does she seem to keep up the humor from earlier about being a retainer to Bayushi... Her nose seems to wrinkle very slightly at the scent of the almost foppish (to her bare bones, salt of the earth way of style, anyway) behavior of the newcommer and she mentally seems to write him off as having 'too much to unlearn' if she were to pass on her own style...

...However most importantly she feels a growing sense of discomfort in where this s going...

Vrishma's demeanor has changed somewhat after they get out of the room, and the aura of subservience is gone - from what the others can tell, as the Vanara is either impeccably polite or brazenly ignorant, sometimes about the same thing. Certainly, he says, picking up his pack and weapons where he left them before entering the room By the way, why do humans carry weapons when they see their hosts? " It is Lord Bayushi will that we speak of sword-fighting while he consults with his two other advisors. I prefer a good curved sword as it mimics the motions of the naginata and confuses my adversary, which gives me the advantage. The katana is wonderfully crafted sword but I do not have the correct respect for it nor place of birth to wield it properly." Masaya drops his voice to a barely audible whisper. He says to Vrishma and Ikiera Keep the voice down, I don't want that kid to hear us. Right, we've got some serious problems. First of all, I know it's my fault, I told him you were my retainers, but what was I supposed to say, that we're the remnants of Kyo's army and we ourselves are cursed? This was the least suspicious thing. You'll just have to grimace and bear it, I'll tell him I like to do my own cleaning and stuff so you don't have to do any servant work.
Secondly, I don't trust Masumi. She's hiding something, why did she leave her clan?
The third problem is this guy who's going to be guiding us, everyone seems to think he's untrustworthy, we'll have to be on our guard. DO either of you have any spells which could be useful to kkep him trustworthy.

Vrishma

Vrishma scratches his head, just behind his right ear, as he listens to Masaya. He doesn't seem to be overly troubled, overall. When he speaks, he is quiet, but the joking tone in his voice isn't completely gone.

I can't say our problems are any larger than they used to be, I cannot. No problem will there be, Masaya, if you don't expect me to dote over you night and day. I can always tell the young one my people have different... traditions, I can. And miss Masumi... apparently human women can also act coy, I say, he grins widely. It may be a little too early to want to know everything about her. Among my people we say “judge the fruit by its taste, not its color,” we will learn of her when we see what she does. Although there is some truth to what you say, indeed there is – the feel of a samurai, little though I know, she does not have. Perhaps she does walk the path of the vanaprajara, after all, he ponders, his long fingers drumming his chin now, as he finally seems to be getting serious.

I am more worried about the magistrate’s son, I am. A young foal like him may be ill-suited to the shadowy paths we may take. If, the spirits preserve us, we are tainted and turn into monsters, I fear for him more than for Masumi. It’s sad when a young one like that enters danger, not to mention that if something happens to him, danger will stalk us as well. As for this guide… I would not be so worried, in these lands outsiders and woodsmen are often maligned, they are. I could prepare a way to know what guides his heart, I could… yet if he be a rogue, quick mind could help us more than magical aid. The spirits are whimsical, indeed they are, but do not favor those who do not rely on their own wisdom.

Regardless, we should first see the house, we should. I do not want to leave a foul murder like this behind me in my path, I don’t, and if it happened at the family’s house someone should have noticed it. I will need some solitude, however. I have learned that my arts are sometimes... disturbing for the unknowing, indeed they are. Yet before I forget - a grain of knowledge for you, Masaya – a wise spider always remembers well he has spun his web before, lest he himself get tangled.

Vrishma

Vrishma goes into the house, looking with sadness upon the desolation that has taken hold of the once-happy home. He looks at the blood trails, and his eyes flash for a moment.

He takes out his mace, and charts a protective sigil in the air with the other hand. In the gloomy room, it seems like twisting columns of air have gathered around him - although there is neither sound nor mark of such winds in the room.

Master Chion, wait! Vrishma says, confidently (and not too quietly). I understand your enthusiasm, young one, but you should not let it cloud your judgement, you should not. Was it not one of your people's greatest warriors who said "To charge unprepared is to invite disaster", I ask?

Having said that, he concentrates and chants a strange mantra in his native tongue for a few seconds. Upon finishing it, he closes his eyes - and when they open again, there is a strange radiance in them.

((Casts Detect evil))

Let us proceed carefully, I say. I hope you don't mind, Master Chion, but I would prefer it if I could go first, I would - I am more accustomed to seeing in such gloom. The ends of the things hands end in long, cruel looking claws and there appears to be blood and giblets on the tips of some of its fingers. It growls more and begins to lurch toward the group. Thank you, master Chion. Yet first, there is something that I would like to check up. Vrishma senses that there is something buried and starts digging with one hand, the other still clutching the dagger. Upon finding the buried bones he clicks his tongue with disapproval and tilts his head.

A sorry sight, this is. Forgive the insult to your senses, humans, but such travesty must not be maintained a second longer, it must not. He unearths the remains, and takes those of humans - or any other humanoids, for that matter - out. In the second hole, he picks up what seems to be the handle of a weapon, and "hmm"s surprised. He lifts the weapons with care, placing them together, before addressing Chion. These, I suppose, belonged to one of the family. What would be done with them in such case, master Chion? I don't know if there are any survivors who should inherit them.

((Good thing there isn't a Lion around... although it can get prickly anyway. The next he does if there are no very powerful objections to his behavior and/or after they finish))

He rises to his feet, and cleans his hands as best he can with a piece of cloth (er, I presume he has one or two... if not - I forgot to write them in the inventory - he will try to rub the dirt off) and some water from his skin. He then knees next to the bones and starts chanting a prayer in his own language, and then the spirit speech. When he finishes, he takes up a handful of soil, sprinkles it over them, and casts a few drops of water over it as well. He then rises and goes around the room 3 times, again chanting, before taking up and ringing a small gong he has kept in his robes. Those more sensitive to the flow of ki feel a faint surge of energy as the clang echoes in their ears. ((Turn Undead)). Finally, he inscribes a circle of strange hieroglyphs on a sheet of paper, which he places at the door.

Having done that, he returns to the center of the room, sits down and spreads a circle of strange dust that seems to glow in the gloomy room as he begins intoning a sonorous mantra. His head soon tilts, and his eyes seem to become pearly-white.

Vrishma

((BTW, do such presences register to spirit sight? It is always on iirc, I'm just reminding you ;) )

As Vrishma's spirit opens up to the reflection of the cellar, he senses that there is a strange... presence in the air. Perhaps it has been too weak for his senses to pick up before. He studies it some more in order to be able to contact it, then out of pure curiosity. Not being able to determine exactly what it is, he looks for spirits further away, but finds little of such importance - minor spirits with no conscience do not bother him (Cyrus, let me know if there's anything at longer ranges, up to the 120-feet border). Eventually it dives back into the body.

The vanara's eyes close, then open again. Now they are back to normal. He sighs, and puts a hand in his robe again. There is something present here, indeed there is. I will see what it is.. Saying this, he takes out first a small wooden figurine he bought in the capital as a souvenir, then a small amount of incense that he places in a circle aroung and under it. His other hand takes a flint and tinder out of his sash, and he draws up a spark. As the incense catches fire, he rises, and begins to intone a series of words in the Spirit Tongue as his hands wave with the smoke. The smoke itself forms a cloud, and the cloud begins to take a shape...

(Casts Commune with Lesser Spirit, will DC 16 if it is not CG and does not want to cooperate. Sorry that I had to invent something to carry, I will subtract 10 gp. As a lvl 5 caster, am I allowed 2 or 3 questions?)

The spirit talks to you in an anguished voice.

"I was the patriarch of this house. So glad was I to see my second son after word had reached us that the army had failed. He came to us a couple of weeks ago, during the night. No one saw him enter. He had a high temper and was delusional. I took him in immediately. The next night he killed his younger sister. I was shocked. He loved her dearly, and they would always spend time together when time permitted. I didn't want this shame on my house, so I...buried her in the cellar.

As the weeks went by, my son's behavior became increasingly erratic and violent until I had to contain him in the very same basement. One night I went down to feed him his meal and he had...changed. He was feasting on the remains of his sister. He growled and spit angrily at me, but he did not attack. I think deep down he knew who I was and was somehow able to barely restrain himself from attacking me.

A few nights later, he couldn't hold back anymore. He killed me and then went upstairs and killed the rest of the family. Oh my dear Miho, forgive me. He somehow sensed that I lingered on, having all this death on my hands. I lingered in the basement, and that is where he generally stayed. He would go out at nights and bring back animals, but thankfully, no more humans. And then you four came and put my son out of his misery. I thank you, what little thanks from a grieving spirit can mean."

The fewer who need to know the whole truth of what happened, the less chance of widespread panic. And now we come to what happened here. The second son of the merchant returned home tired in the middle of the night. Unbeknownst to all he was being corrupted by the taint from the extended campaign in the shadowlands. thus the shadowlands creature we found slowly killed the son from within. but he didnt fully die, as there are instances where he recognized his father, and the final proof that he was still fighting the taint was the bodies found in the well, drawing attention to himself to keep the creature from harming the villiage. Had we known the taint had become more powerful than a finger of jade could prevent, steps could have been taken to prevent this tradgedy. It is my suggestion to have all other survivors of the army recive a jade treatment and a cleansing bath to prevent any further appearances of shadowland creatures inside the empires defenses. Masaya bows, but only slightly, this man is after all his social inferior.
Greetings, Nobutada! Let me buy you a drink.
Masaya sits down at the bar, and orders more of whatever he's already having for Nobutada. Then he turns back to him.
I have a business proposition for you. I need a guide to take me and 4 others on a trip to a temple in the mountains. I've asked around, and you were recommended.

Vrishma

Having taken his leave from the magistrate with as much etiquette as he can muster Yet I wonder if saying "May the Great Tree's blossom s forever fall over you and yours," was a good idea, I do., Vrishma nears the tavern. He sees Chion practicing and for a moment looks at him uncertain Ah, our young foal is prancing again, he is. I wonder myself whether I should adjoin him, I do... but maybe later. The spirits willing, there will be time a-plenty for games on the way..

He is present at the exchange between Masumi and Chion and he sharpens his ears. Ah, are the two youths flirting, I wonder? This may make our journey so much the merrier. He approaches calmly, however, and does not make any comment as he goes near.

Nobutada's eyes brighten a bit at the mention of more alcohol, and brighten a bit more at the mention of a temple.

"Ah, taking a trip to the last known destination of Genki the Sage, are we? I can take you up there, right enough. I have a few claims staked out that I need to check on, so I'll even lower my fee. What were you plannin on offerin Master...?":

Masumi shrugs at Chion while she leans against the wall. She looks no where near as sour as she did a moment go but it almost seems as if she's bothered by something.

"Also, I've found that perhaps I was a bit... Headstrong earlier when I asked your father if you needed a teacher... but there's bound to be someone we'll run into who can't swing a sword properly..."

Hm, mayhaps something there truly is, I wonder. I may have to keep my ears open around those two, I may. I have wondered myself, I have. As a mouse does not refuse a sheath of grain for the winter, one who expects trouble does not refuse an extra sword, I say. Yet, you - the son of a magistrate you are, master Chion. Perhaps he does not want to be held responsible if anything happens, I think.

He shrugs as his words trail off, and his tail drops a little. In I will go now, I will, to see how they are doing. Come in when you want. Saying that, he enters the inn and goes near Masaya.

After having satisfied (at least partially) his curiosity, Vrishma looks around the store for some heavier clothes. He looks critically at his companions, then at the heavier clothes around. The spirits of this land are not so well known to me, they aren't. he states plainly, and my word may not be enough to ensure their support for a large group like ours. Like the red rats before the winter, we should be, and we would do well to be prepared in more mundane ways. Where is miss Masumi, by the way? She didn't seem to carry a heavier cloak, I think, and hardy as she may be she could use one if the weather is bad.

With this, he inspects the fur cloaks and looks at its size, making measurements with his hands. He looks back at the storekeeper, and asks Tradesman, how much do those cloaks cost?

Some time away from the village, he excuses himself and goes away in the bushes for a while. (Hopefully) away from the party's eyes, he lets out a few loud hoots.

If yes, and she doesn't show any abnormal behavior, he pats her gently, and rubs her flank. Welcome back, I wish you, my dear. I trust you've kept yourself well? Come, we have much to do he says, inspecting her fur.
((Heal check:18 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=774017), he will check for anything but particularly marks similar to those he and his companions have been developing.))

If she is okay and not somehow corrupted (she had 1 jade finger for all that counts), he will come back and introduce her to the group. Be not afraid, good friends, he says This is Shimikawa, she is, and by the graces of Mother Bear she guards me from harm. Stay your hand from her and no harm to you she will be, she will.

--- --- ---

2nd day:

After spending near an hour at dawn meditating and chanting (and annoying any light speepers), Vrishma sees a river in their path. To wait for me a little ask you, I will, he tells the others Long has it been since last I honored the spirits properly, indeed it has, and their support will be for us like a gentle rain for the forest - hardly felt, but keeping death away, it will be.

He takes off his basket, the weapons, the vest, and a bundle of other things both mundane and strange that he keeps in his robe. He takes a bottle from the basket, and pours some of the contents in the river, droning a slow chant and ending it with a hearty shout. The rest of it he leaves by the trunk of a tree and puts a rice bun next to it, saying something in the tongue of the Vanara. Finally, he walks into the river and sits down, praying, as the water almost - but not quite - reaches into his mouth. After a while he stands up, taking a handful of water, and sprinkles it onto the others.

May Old Man River protect us from evil, I ask, as the water that flows from his beard washes us. When the heart with courage drums, and the eye with will shines, the spirits will not abandon us. So say the Lords of the Mountain Peaks.
