Is there a way for a forum to ignore bbc tags?

On occasion someone would ask how to do xyz on a forum and I find it somewhat cumbersome to give an answer like "use [ b ][ /b ] without the spaces in the brackets to bold things." So is there a way for me to put in tags w/o a site interpreting it as such?
