View Full Version : Beautiful weapons! (SFW only!)

So, we've had a couple of threads for pretty ladies, handsome gentlemen and other such eye-candy, so in the same vein, this is a thread about cool, weird, beautiful or otherwise eye-catching weapons.

So, you've got a picture or drawing of a weapon you like, post it here. It can be as silly or as realistic as you want, we're not going to mock you (for longer than a few pages, anyway).

I'll start with a quite simple bearded axe: http://www.wealddown.co.uk/images%20shop/4903LE%20axe.jpgIt does look business.

I'll also plop in a very elegant-looking sword I also posted in another thread (which got me thinking about this):http://www.thearma.org/essays/armoredlongsword/armoredls1.jpg

[Edit]: These ridiculous accusations that I'd had written "SWF" instead of "SFW" in the title of this thread are quite baseless, and this edit is just to remind everyone that no such mistake has been made or indeed even could have been made. The thread title most certainly wasn't "fixed" afterwards! /jedi mindcontrol handwave

The term is "Safe For Work," SFW, not SWF. (Which means... Silly Wrong Formation? HA!)

And at OP's Axe... I prefer my weapons be ladies. (...not bearded ladies.)

If I'm not mistaken, Mitsurugi had a weapon called Shamshir in either Soul Calibur II or II that looked almost exactly like that.

Not to mention the revolver, with no barrel to speak of, has an effective range of about six inches, and the knife is really no good for anything other than use as a letter-opener. Like I said, it fails at being three weapons in one.

Now here is a gun that is not messing around...

I'm a fan of the Khopesh. It combines the stabbing of the sword with the hacking of the axe! Although I am realizing now that straight swords are a lot better at the stabbing through stuff.

Only if you have a crude or shallow ideal of beauty. Otherwise, practicality is a beauty all on it's own.

I have an irrational hatred for useless but pretty weapons, and find beauty in practical and effective weapons. Therefor, my favorites tend to be Kukris, Naginatas, and Landsknecht Flamberges (though that last is more because it makes such a beautiful fire toy). Meanwhile the beauty of a Rope Dart or Meteor Hammer is only evident when you see it used properly.

This one distinctly looks like it's supposed to be used for self stabbing and a crowning final shot on your own chest. There's a joint between the brass knuckles/handle and the revolving thingy, and another connecting to the knife edge, so that the whole thing could be folded down so that the revolving part of the revolver would be inside you fist when you used the knuckles.

Still not a very practical apparatus.

[Edit]: It's curious that such a design was used at all, and yet there seem to be several individual guns with the shared design. Does anyone know the history of these things?

FYI for those saying the Apache Revolver is dumb because you'll stab yourself.

The knife folds up and the gun folds down. Making it easily concealed in your palm until needed. Yes, it's horribly inaccurate but it is not meant to be used at a great distance, everything about it's design screams close range.

For the name of the first sword: looks like a really big grossemesser, but I'm not sure. It's what I'd imagine the Wheel of Time heronmarked blades look like, instead of katana ripoffs.

On kukris: I actually really like the severe bend to the blade. Smoothing it out just doesn't look as stylish.

Ok, seriously, I do like the feel of a scythe. Its such a stylish weapon. ^ ^My English history lecturer used to know an old guy who still used his scythe to cut his grass. It was always sharpened to an incredible degree, and was so old that the blade'd been ground down to a sliver.

I made this based on a "real" blade. I'll see if I can find it again. If I can't, I believe it was a request from Rawhide, so maybe he'll drop by with it.

http://pix.motivatedphotos.com/2009/1/9/633671283156512698-The44Magnum.jpg

That it will. People attach scopes to these things and hunt bears with them. Successfully. Still, it's nothing compared to its big brother, the 500 magnum, in terms of power.

http://media.photobucket.com/image/500%20magnum/michsimm/SW_500_Magnum.jpg
It's got it beat in size and even muzzle velocity... if not practicality.

To put things into perspective, the 44 magnum fires at approximately, oh, 1500 feet per second muzzle velocity. The M4, a lovely gun in its own right and favorite of the U.S. military
http://www.impactguns.com/store/media/aac/m4.jpg
fires with a muzzle velocity of just under 3000 feet per second... with a round half the size. What this means is, taking dimensions into consideration, the 44 magnum is twice as powerful as the M4 carbine.
The 500 magnum fires at 2000 feet per second. That's pretty much enough to take down anything short of a male african elephant.

Of course, when it comes to more antique weapons...

Distract the subject somehow and stab him in the heart. By the time he actually notices you are gone. Be it 6 seconds away. The revolver seems to be to buy yourself a few seconds more by returning fire against the guards.

Yes. You had messers, langmessers, grossmessers (http://ensifer.carbonmade.com/projects/96365#10) - general blades evolved form knives pretty much, that were becoming popular from around 1300, and it seems like at the end of 15th century, two handed versions were popular.

Somewhat off topic rebuttal:

Except that what matters is energy, which is 1/2*mass*velocity^2.

So the .44 magnum typically produces between 1200-1500 foot-pounds of energy depending on the load.

The 5.56 NATO round the M-4 fires typically produces around 1700 ft-lbs.

So the .44 Magnum is almost as powerful as the 5.56, despite being twice as wide and around 5 times as heavy. In firearm ballistics, velocity is almost always the winner.

Which basically just means I want BOTH. :)

Maybe not beautiful, and definitely not practical but...

It's not about practicality, it's about possibility.

I mean, big stuff made from some interlocking pieces of something, bigger than wielder etc... And it's supposed to behave like sword?

If you say "fantasy" and it in fact is possible then, there won't be so much more practical things - sword, shoots stuff, and I can dig a well with it?
Yes please. :smallwink:

Never mind the steel it's made from. Those swords are wall pieces only. They're wickedly heavy too.
Anduril and Sword of the Witchking, I'd say are both at least 12 pounds. I can give a better estimate next time I visit home.
Despite what some of RPG books say, a 15 pound weapon is too heavy for repeated use under anything like combat conditions. Even scripted reenactments would be too much.

edit for clarity: I'm referring to the weights of the LotR swords making them wallhangers only. My metallurgical knowledge isn't good enough to identify good iron alloys by name.

Actually, no, stuff from this shop have quite bearable weight. Anduril's 5 pounds. Heavy, but certainly not unheard of in actual swords.

And steel and overall construction is exactly what makes them unusable wallhangers if they are such (most certainly are).

Yeah, a greatsword, which is what those two blades are. And they're big, too. Perhaps not as big as a Zweihander or a scottish Claymore, but still

A good bastard sword is only half the weight listed in the 3.5 PHB. 3 pounds of good, well made metal will get you 3 1/2 feet of weapon

Believe me, I know that much. D&D was replaced as my favorite hobby by the SCA. A weapon over 10 pounds gets to be too heavy to use, even for the strongest people.
I was referring to the LotR swords, and the listed weights in some games. 12 pounds and up for some axes and swords, even 1 handers.

Machine guns usually provide cover fire, meaning no one gets to get any damn close to you.

More importantly, they ensure an enemy presence(guys in a window, for instance) isn't making a nuisance of itself(I.E: firing back) and/or killing anyone you like.

Remember everyone: Machineguns save lives.

One of my favorite weapons of all time, the Horse Chopper (http://www.enlightenmentswords.com/product/dao_zhong_yi.html), a.k.a. the Zhan Ma Dao. It has a colorful history among the Tong, as the weapon of choice among the various criminal organizations, since it was one of the few weapons which were quite capable of standing up to anything the nobility could muster.

Faster than a Naginata, stronger and more force output than a Katana (FYI: a normal Dao will go through bamboo mats one-handed without much effort at all, due to being a heavier chopping blade). It's definitely a weapon to be used.

Yes, in the form of detachable combat knifes, if I understand correctly. They would obviously take them off for normal walking around, and attach them only when preparing to go into a dangerous situation that might require close combat. Stabbing someone with a knife attached to your gun is far preferred to dropping the gun to pull out a weapon, after all.

As for a weapon in the beauty-in-elegance, I'll bring out the Eiku. It is, quite literally, an oar - a wooden staff with a flattened paddle on one end. The design allows it to be handled like a staff, wielding the paddle end like a polearm, or even using the flat of the weapon to toss sand in an opponent's eyes (as the myth goes). It isn't well known, given that its use is limited mostly to one martial art out of Okinawa, a single region of Japan.

YES. Yes, it is. If I had a smiley shedding a tear, I'd be giving it.

Anything designed to give an explosive payload to its tareget is beautiful by default.

The N-Trident is my favorite, however.

Are you SURE that's it?

I REALLY don't rememeber that from the movie. Any of the three.

It was there, in the first movie. Casey Jones meets Raphael. They start arguing, do a bit of fighting, and Casey keeps pulling out new weapons, all of them sports implements. That happens when he pulls out a cricket bat

Yup.

Raphael has just disarmed Casey of a baseball bat and Casey replies, "OK, new game." as he pulls out the cricket bat.

I may have gotten a few of the words wrong, but the scene is there. My brothers and I watched it enough growing up that I am sure of that. :)

http://thedarkblade.com/wp-content/uploads/Macahuitl1.jpg

.. The one at the bottom called a macahuitl.. It is produced by affixing prismatic blades - blades with nearly monomolecular edges of obsidian - to a wooden shaft and they were used by aztecs. It is said that you can really cut down a horse into two with them. And druids can use them even with DMs that care a bit too much about the fluff and ban metal weapons for druids. (I used to ban metal weapons for druids all the time)

In history, swords were mostly impractical for european cultures where armor-use was common. Not turkish folks, they were nearly always light cavalry and not mongols indeed. Far-east is something I don't know a lot about but if I believe in what I see on TV - DO NOT believe in anything you watch on TV - there seems to have been a long history of katanas and unarmored fighting.

In european cultures, compared to other weapon types, swords were wimpy weapons that break/get stuck so often against any kind of armor and even bones. So they were either thick sheets of metal that tear apart instead of cutting through for added weight and durability or they were ceramonial stuff depicting status. Metal was more expensive than wood and making 5 spears instead of one sword with the same amount of metal was more logical. They didn't have reach, the simple manuevvers that could be taught in basic mass-battle training - haven't you ever heard of 'Thrust! Recover!' - were less effective with a sword than say.. again.. a spear. Especially anything longer than a legion's broadsword would be distruptive in formations.

So, being the ultra realism-needing barely-educated S.O.B. DM, I hate swords and sword-users :) but macahuitls are an exception. I loved them in first sight. Especially after hearing that aztecs produced them using only pressure.

I'm sorry but that's a bunch of generalizations and bad stereotypes.

Japanese weren't really fighting unarmored if they could help it, european swrods weren't any "thick sheets of metal" compared to others, armor use was common everywhere, Mongols were also wearing metal armors if they could afford it. Swords weren't breaking against bones if they were half decently made. And finally all depends on the period, sword was something different in France 900 A.D than in 1400.

And macahuitls weren't really swords, but something like club with sharp obsidians chunks obviously... Which makes them kinda unique stuff, but that's a detail.

EDIT: Somehow, related - this article (http://www.myarmoury.com/feature_higgins_vik.html) for some imagination... Obviously it isn't very beautiful now, at least to most, but it certainly was when it was new and ready to battle.

Beautiful, you say?

http://hosting11.imagecross.com/image-hosting-39/3064062400_1339-00-.jpg

It's a Creek ceremonial dagger, made of blue glass attached to a deer antler hilt. It was given to my mother by the Turtle Clan Mother some years back when she was a guest at a ceremony (though for the life of me, I can't remember which one-- they've been friends for many years).

Despite appearances, it's relatively sharp. I've cut myself on it. It's not the most functional: you could probably kill someone with it, but you'd be unlikely to see a second use.

Looks great!

I'm not good about such stuff - how it's attached to the handle? That would be the most important about "functionality" IMO.

There's a slot cut into the antler and a longer extension of the glass blade that's inserted therein. A small hole is made at the bottom of the slot in the antler on the underside, then a expanding adhesive goo made of the marrow from the rest of the antler (and some other stuff, I presume-- I never asked for more detail) is poured in to cement the knife together.

So it's reasonably well attached. The larger issue for functionality is that it's a stabbing knife made of glass-- I'm told that they tend to have pieces of the edge and point break off when they hit bone.

Those, on the other hand, look pretty neat. And familiar. Are they from a museum in Geneva? (Although I suppose that wouldn't be the only place with such weapons on display).
