For ten years I have been polishing this sword;
Its frosty edge has never been put to the test.
Now I am holding it and showing it to you, sir:
Is there anyone suffering from injustice?

The Youxia is a little project of mine, somewhat based on characters from Ancient Chinese Novels such as the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and the Water Margin, as well as films like "Iron Monkey" and "Once Upon a time in China". This is still a work in process though, but I wanted to post what I have now.

The Youxia was a type of chivalrous hero from Dynastic China, that first appeared during the Han Dynasty and began to disappear during the Qing Dynasty.

Youxia literally means ‘wandering force’, but is commonly translated as ‘knight-errant’ or less commonly as ‘cavalier’, ‘adventurer’, ‘soldier of fortune’, and ‘underworld stalwart’. The term ‘wandering force’ refers to the way these men solely traveled the land using force (or influence through association with powerful people) to right the wrongs done to the common people and the monarchy if need be.

Play a Youxia if you want to be a fast, armed martial artist who upholds justice and freedom, who wanders the land fighting those who use their magical power to abuse those who cannot protect themselves.

Making Youxia
Youxia are
Abilities: The Youxia are wuxia-inspired Knight Errants, and tend to be just as good with words as they are with swords. A good Youxia will need a high degree of dexterity to be able to use their martial arts effectively, as well as good wisdom and Charisma scores for such things as diplomacy and writing poetry. Most Youxia tend to have average constitution scores, as they focus more on dodging and avoiding attacks
Races: The most common Youxia in the world tend to be humans, with Half-Elves, Elves, and Half-orcs following in lesser numbers. Though rare, it is entirely possible to see an Orcish Youxia in some places.
Alignment: Youxia are devoted to the concepts of Freedom and justice, and most tend to be either Chaotic good or Neutral Good. True Neutral Youxia are rare, and Chaotic Neutral Youxia tend to be misbranded as wild forces of nature. A Lawful Good Youxia would, for instance, be not dissimilar to Guan Yu or Liu Bei from the Romance of the three kingdoms; while a Chaotic Neutral Youxia would be most similar to Lu Bu. A Chaotic Good Wuxia is most like the character of Iron Monkey, from the movie of the same name.
Starting Gold: Same as a Fighter.
Starting Age: Same as a Fighter.

Weapon Proficiencies:Youxia are proficient with Unarmed Strike; Falchion; Longsword; Long Spear; Bastard Sword;Halberd;Quarterstaff; Greatsword; Rapier; Scimitar; Lance; Longbow; and Composite Longbow. They are proficient with Light Armor, but no shields.

Smite Evil:Starting at third level, Once per day, a Youxia may attempt to smite evil with one normal melee or ranged attack. She adds her Charisma bonus (if any) to her attack roll and deals 1 extra point of damage per Youxia level. If the Youxia accidentally smites a creature that is not evil, the smite has no effect, but the ability is still used up for that day and the Youxia takes her Charisma bonus as a penalty to all attack and damage rolls for a week. Every third level, the Youxia gains another daily Smite Evil attempt.

Unarmed Strike:At 1st level, a Youxia gains Improved Unarmed Strike as a bonus feat. A Youxia’s attacks may be with either fist interchangeably or even from elbows, knees, and feet. This means that a Youxia may even make unarmed strikes with her hands full. There is no such thing as an off-hand attack for a Youxia striking unarmed. A Youxia may thus apply her full Strength bonus on damage rolls for all her unarmed strikes.

Usually a Youxia’s unarmed strikes deal lethal damage, but she can choose to deal nonlethal damage instead with no penalty on her attack roll. She has the same choice to deal lethal or nonlethal damage while grappling.

A Youxia’s unarmed strike is treated both as a manufactured weapon and a natural weapon for the purpose of spells and effects that enhance or improve either manufactured weapons or natural weapons.

A Youxia also deals more damage with her unarmed strikes than a normal person would. At level one, a Youxia deals 1d6 damage with their unarmed strike. At Level 10, a Youxia does 2d6, and at level 20 they do 2d8 damage.

AC Bonus: When in light or no armor and unencumbered, the Youxia adds her Wisdom bonus (if any) to her AC. In addition, a Youxia gains a +1 bonus to AC at 4th level. This bonus increases by 1 for every four Youxia levels thereafter.

These bonuses to AC apply even against touch attacks or when the Youxia is flat-footed. She loses these bonuses when she is immobilized or helpless, when she wears any armor above light, when she carries a shield, or when she carries a medium or heavy load.

Combat Style Apprenticeship: At 2nd level, a Youxia must select one of Four combat styles to pursue: archery, Straight Sword, Curved Blade, or Polearm. This choice affects the character’s class features but does not restrict her selection of feats or special abilities in any way.

If the Youxia selects archery, she is treated as having the Rapid Shot feat, even if she does not have the normal prerequisites for that feat. In addition, the Youxia can use Precise Shot, even if she does not have the feat, when wielding the Longbow or Composite Longbow

If the Youxia selects Straight Sword, she is treated as having the Weapon Finesse feat, even if she does not have the normal prerequisites for that feat. In addition, the Youxia can treat the Longsword and Bastard Swords as light weapons for the purpose of the feat.

If the Youxia selects Curved Blade, she is treated as having the Cleave feat, even if she does not have the normal prerequisites for that feat. In addition, the Youxia can use Power Attack, even if she does not have the feat, when wielding the Falchion; Scimitar; or Greatsword.

If the Youxia selects Polearm, she is treated as having the Improved Trip feat, even if she does not have the normal prerequisites for that feat. In addition, the Youxia can use Combat Reflexes, even if she does not have this feat, when wielding the Longspear; Quarterstaff; Halberd; or Lance.

The benefits of the youxia's chosen style apply only when she wears light or no armor.

Combat Focus: At level Four, the Youxia gains the Combat Focus feat as a Class Ability

Combat Style Journeyman: At 6th level, a Youxia's aptitude in her chosen combat style (Archery,Straight Sword, Curved Blade, or Polearm) improves. If she selected archery at 2nd level, she is treated as having the Manyshot feat, even if he does not have the normal prerequisites for that feat. Additionally, when using a Longbow or Composite Longbow, she can use the Zen Archery feat, even if she does not have the feat.

If the youxia selected Straight Sword at 2nd level, she is treated as having the Dodge feat, even if she does not have the normal prerequisites for that feat. In addition, when using a Longsword; rapier; or Bastard sword, the Youxia is treated as if she has the One Handed Fighting Feat (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=156935).

If the youxia selected Curved Blade at 2nd level, she is treated as having the Great Cleave feat, even if she does not have the normal prerequisites for that feat. In addition, when using a Falchion; Scimitar; or Greatsword, the Youxia is treated as if she has the Extra Smiting Feat.

If the youxia selected Polearm at 2nd level, she is treated as having the Improved Combat Expertise feat, even if she does not have the normal prerequisites for that feat. In addition, the Youxia can use the Spinning Halberd feat, even if she does not have this feat, when wielding the Halberd; or she can use Fleet of Foot Feat when using a lance; or she can use the Hindering Opportunist feat when using a Longspear;or the Quick Staff Feat when using a Quarterstaff.

As before, the benefits of the Youxia’s chosen style apply only when he wears light or no armor. She loses all benefits of his combat style when wearing medium or heavy armor.

Combat Style Mastery: At 10th level, a Youxia's aptitude in her chosen combat style (Archery,Straight Sword, Curved Blade, or Polearm) improves. If she selected archery at 2nd level, she is treated as having the Improved Rapid Shot feat, even if he does not have the normal prerequisites for that feat. Additionally, when using a Longbow or Composite Longbow, she can use the Improved Mounted Archery feat, even if she does not have the feat.

If the youxia selected Straight Sword at 2nd level, she is treated as having the Raptor School feat, even if she does not have the normal prerequisites for that feat. In addition, when using a Longsword; rapier; or Bastard Sword, the Youxia is treated as if she has the Improved One Handed Fighting Feat (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=156935).

If the youxia selected Curved Blade at 2nd level, she is treated as having the Combat Brute feat, even if she does not have the normal prerequisites for that feat. In addition, when using a Falchion; Scimitar; or Quarterstaff, the Youxia is treated as if she has the Monkeygrip Feat.

If the youxia selected Polearm at 2nd level, she is treated as having the Shock Trooper feat, even if she does not have the normal prerequisites for that feat. In addition, the Youxia can use the Short Haft feat, even if she does not have this feat, when using the Halberd; Quarterstaff; lance; or Longspear.

As before, the benefits of the Youxia’s chosen style apply only when he wears light or no armor. She loses all benefits of his combat style when wearing medium or heavy armor.

If the youxia selected Straight Sword at 2nd level, she has a choice of either the Slashing Flurry feat or the Driving Flurry feat, even if she does not have the normal prerequisites for the feat she chooses. In addition, when using a Longsword; rapier; or Bastard Sword, the Youxia is treated as if she has the Greater One Handed Fighting Feat (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=156935).

I can already see you got tons of class abilities planned for this. :smalleek: Won't that be a huge hassle, and make it easy to overlook things?

Also, interesting name. When I saw the thread title, I linked it more to Japanese Youkai, to be perfectly honest. But I guess that could be combined with this class to make an interesting character.

Just don't throw too many random stuff together. I see quite a bunch of levels with Bonus Feats, which will be unnecessary with the tons of other class abilities. Also, with that many, you might make it so they don't synch together very well. You're not just simply trying to make the Monk again at the same level of power and strangeness, are you? Striving higher than that is better, but don't over-strain yourself.

EDIT: Also, the BAB is wrong. The second one should always be 5 less than the first, the third 5 less than the second, the fourth 5 less than the third. That's a bit messed up here.

Weapon Proficiencies:Youxia are proficient with the Falchion; Longsword; Long Spear; Halberd; Battleaxe; Rapier; Scimitar; Lance; Longbow; and Composite Longbow. They are proficient with Light Armor, but no shields.

You might want to mention that they're proficient with unarmed strikes, too. Since they have a progression for it and all. Avoid that whole "are they or aren't they" discussion that monks had...

Looks interesting, otherwise.

Full BAB, six skill points, two good saves. Pretty frontloaded in the raw stats, but eh, that alone isn't unbalanced.

Can't say too much about it past level two since the class abilities aren't written up yet, but it looks like a very busy class.

In addition to the BAB error, you list the AC bonus as increasing every 4 levels, but the table has it going up every two. You also copy pasta'd the monk's evasion in your Unarmed Strike entry.

I like this idea.
Question however, when you gain a second combat style, for example, straight sword and curved blade, you're unlikely to want to swap between the weapons. So, considering they all make you use a specific weapon, you're always missing out on at least one ability.

So you've got a monk/paladin/ranger combo, interesting. After reading through the class, I think you've got too many feats. The combat styles grant a good and a poor feat at each improvement, and you're giving the whole combat focus line for free, and an extra feat at 1st and every 4 levels, and there's still a few class features on top of those. Something's gotta give, and since the fighting styles and combat focus seem to have been placed there very specifically, I'd lose the unspecified bonus feats. The class would still look a little cluttered, but since you can't use everything else at once I think that would be okay. Normal feats from leveling up should be more than enough room for customization when your combat feats are provided by your class.

The unarmed style is a little lacking towards the end. Ki Blast isn't a very good feat even if you take it as soon as possible, so as an 18th level ability it's pretty well wasted, and Fists of Iron isn't so hot either if I remember right. Abundant Step is pretty nifty but you can only use it once per day, so maybe you could do something with that.

I'm glad you liked my One Handed Fighting feat enough to include it here, I'd only ask for credit in return. And you probably want to link or copy it here since it's making up and important part of that combat style.

Leadership: At level 6, a Youxia gains the leadership feat as a Class Ability. A Youxia gains an automatic +1 to her leadership score, representing the renown gained as a wandering hero of justice.

I recommend against giving Leadership as a class feature. It's hopelessly broken.
