So, here in Toronto and area just got hit by an earthquake around 5 minutes ago. Apparently it was felt as far south as Delaware. Anyone else feel it?:smallcool:

Yeah, I felt it in Rochester. Whatever it is still hasn't shown up on the USGS website. Which seems strange, because based on my ex-California experience it felt kind of 3.0-ish to me and I don't even know where the epicenter was.

Apparently, it was a 5.7 Richter scale earthquake epicentered in Quebec.

Wow, hope they're all doing okay. That's not insignificant and it felt like it went on for quite a while after the initial jolt too.

Felt it here in NW Vermont, though it was mild enough that I wasn't sure until just now if it was actually an earthquake or just heavy machinery somewhere nearby.

Yes, I'm about 150 km from the epicenter in Quebec. First earthquake I ever experience in this region. It seemed to last quite long.

Ah, now it's up. Here (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/dyfi/) is the US Geological Service place where you can report your location and experience if you felt it.

Yikes, it's the second-most powerful earthquake in the world for the past week, and this is not a seismically active part of the world.

Hmm...didn't feel anything here in Guelph.

Not historically, as far as major quakes go, but the epicenter is on a fault line (the foot of the Laurentian mountains), so little ones do happen occasionally.

I didn't feel it here in England, so in my book it's more of a rumble than an earthquake :smallwink:

I didn't feel it and I'm a half-hour's drive from Toronto. Then half the people I know start messaging me with "did you feel that?!" :smallconfused:

The obvious explanation. (http://xkcd.com/723/) You just haven't felt it yet.

5.5 is brushing up against the major leagues. It's only the second earthquake in fifteen years that I've felt down here. It's always vaguely troubling, because we've got our share of dormant faults running through major cities and it would be ... unfortunate if any of them ever decided to wake up.

ETA: Apparently now downgraded to 5.0.

According to Global:

"There were no early reports of major damage. The epicentre of the quake was 61 kilometres north of Ottawa, though there are reports it was felt as far away as Toronto, Montreal, Boston, Chicago, Syracuse and Cleveland."

If I didn't know better I would question how that even works. Since I do, I'll just question the intelligence of those who came up with that nomenclature.

Ouch. My ego. It was intended as a mild form of tautology, or just as something vaguely amusing.:smallfrown:

Actually when people I know first started talking about it, that was one of the first things I thought of, but their houses are only a few kilometres away from mine, so yeah.

Actually I might have missed it because I was just waking up near it and was pretty groggy then.

I didn't feel a thing or know that there was an earthquake until some people told me later that there had been one.
