View Full Version : Minotaurs: What kind of legs do they have?

In your campaign world of course. Are they human legs with human feet or are they animal, digigrade type legs like a Satyr?

Mine have always been the animal Satyr style of legs with hooves. Which begs the question, solid hooves or split hooves? I never really thought about that part...

Well, if it's going to have hooves, I'd imagine it to have hooves like a bull.

The tauren *are* minotaurs. :) You just can't copyright the racial term 'minotaur'.

Depiction in Greek art varied, but "human with bull head" seems most common.

I use the standard MM depiction in my campaign world.

I find it strange that the minotaurs of Warcraft are called somthing else, considering that all the orcs, elves, dwarves, gnomes, goblins, etc. all use their traditional fantasy names.

What I mean is I can see the influence of world of warcraft with that picture.

It just like a Tauren right down to the wanna be horde insignia on it's Tarzan loincloth.

You realize that the art in the Monster Manual predates World of Warcraft by three to five years (depending on when the art was actually made), right? EDIT: And Tauren, which were introduced in Warcraft III, debuted in 2002, which means the MM preceded it by two years (and the art likely by another year while it was in development).

Your minotaur is totally not in the context i posted my minotaur :p
their looks.
Also, mine's part of a roman-inspired empire of slavers and overall bastards who happen to have conquered half of the civilized world on the last war. I do have the slight feeling that adds up much more danger.

Your Minotaur can look like what ever the heck you want it to! Its All Fluff. So long as it doent affect the rules of the game. Heck there could even be several "tribes" of minotaurs that all look different! This one could have split hooves, that one could have the legs of a man. Thats the beauty of it all. You get to use your IMAGINATION! lol :smalltongue:

Well, minotaur is the name of what they are, but I think Taurren is a better name for them as a people/culture.

Thats my middle school its parked in front of, and its the same school that the minotaur mounts the horse in front of. The Horse statue is not actually there though.

But yeah, I am not a huge fan of the Minotaur in the monster manual, seems to feral for my tastes, as I like minotaur pc's.

I am sure there is variation, but this Ancient Greek vase of the original dude is just a bulls head plunked on a mans body with a tail. (http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic-art/244670/7761/Theseus-killing-the-Minotaur-detail-of-a-vase-painting-by)

Traditionally, IIRC, a minotaur's legs do follow the Stayr's pattern, with a solid hoof akin to a bull. Minotaurs can wear shoes, but alternatively, if a set of two, rather than four was constructed, have them shod.

I don't like the MM minotaur too much, it just looks like a generic beastman with horns tagged on. Needs more cow(bell).

I use the 3.5 MM illustration usually. If they have class levels they will probably look significantly less feral.

I generally use a cross between animalistic labyrinth minotaurs and Taurens, Feral creatures who live in small slave-taking societies. However, a few groups have evolved into intelligent, generally Good paladinesque beings.

Krynn MInotaurs to my recollection have a kinf of.. semi-hoof/foot.

As in, instead of toes they have two hoof ends, but the rest is foot-like.. kinda like

You can't be wrong when you can't be right. How you imagine them is how you imagine them. There is generally a cultural consensus on horns and bullish faces, and usually some fair amount of body hair, or even fur, but other then that, the skies the limit. The skies the bloody limit.

Sure, but the unique Theseus case and the modern fantasy aesthetic don't fit well, so the real thing is irrelevant if we already assume multiple Minotaurs.

Dragon lance Minotaurs have hooves and oddly enough fangs.

Standard DnD they have human feet.

The big difference being that the DL minotaurs are more of a natural race whereas the standard minotaur is a race created through magical experimentation. They do not even have females and must mate with human females. I think the Dragon Lance minotaurs do have females.

I'm not sure about that. The labyrinth was built to hold the minotaur. I've no clue if he was at all confused by it. :smallwink:
