The question is simple. I want to know what kind of tree this is.

I'm confused by the white wool-like substance it produces.

Sorry for the image sizes.

We have the same trees, or something similar. The "wool" is their seeds, and apparently people used to stuff pillows with it. Alas, I can't remember the name of the plant...

edit: They appear to be poplars (http://www.google.com.au/images?hl=en&rls=com.microsoft:*&rlz=1I7ADRA_en&q=poplar%20tree&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi).

Yeah, I agree with the poplar assessment, more specifically a poplar in the Cottonwood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Populus_sect._Aegiros) family.

Here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Populus_sect._Aegiros) is a nifty tool for future identification.

Vox poplar, vox Dei, then?

Thanks all! That was really quick. I'm learning to identify different species of trees, but that one wasn't on my list and it really puzzled me.

Is it one of these epileptic trees I've heard so much about?

Do you mean Eucalyptus? And no if so.

No, he/she doesn't. (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EpilepticTrees)

I didn't even need to see the picture to know you were talking about a cottonwood/poplar because of the description. There are however many different types and I really couldn't say which type of poplar it is.

@ Ichneumon, If you want to give your email address by PM, I can scan the tree ID guide I got from college (turfgrass science major/environmental science minor and did take a class IDing woody plants trees and shrubs, but think I got my guide from a turf prof) and send it to you. It's a pretty simple one, but it is quite good. I'd have to find it first since it's in a box somewhere, but once I do, it would be pretty easy since it's just sheets in a 3 ring binder.

Well, considering that there's at least one which is called the "shaking poplar" in german (Populus tremula), epileptic tree isn't too far away.
