I've just about decided on being a Sorcerer for my Derro in a campaign I shall be partaking in at some point in the future. However, I am at a total loss as to what to get for a familiar...

I was interested in snake for a moment, but I thought "Do I really need to up my bluff mod rom +13 to +16?"

Are there any Dragon magazine familiars you can suggest, or tiny or smaller creatures from the MM that aren't overpowered for a level 1 sorcerer?

Dragon 323 has Hummingbird familiars, which grant +4 Initiative. Best familiar bonus ever.

Oeh, I smell cheese potential.
Poisonhealing derro with a snakefamiliar is nice if you can stomach it.
Otherwise just get improved familiar or cast a spell or two on your familiar to make him/her/it a elemental or half-fiend, think you can even do both...

Dragon Magazine 341 and p.35 has "Construct Familiars". I think its amazing!

Particularly, the Mercurial Spider, is awesome!!!! :smallcool::smallwink:

Whenever people ask for an interesting familiar I always suggest a living spell. There is a prestige class in Dragon magazine which lets you get one as a familiar and also make many temporary ones to fight for you. You lose some caster levels but if your like me and don't care all that much about optimization then you might like it. My preferences are living Silent Image and then progressively more powerful illusion spells until you can get a fourth level spell familiar then I suggest Living Evard's Black Tentacles. Just my two cents.

Well, consider what you want out of your familiar, first.

A Sentry? A Hawk (very high Spot for the level) or Bat (Blindsense-20) will do very well.

A Scout? The Rat is where it's at, having both climb and swim speeds, a +16 Hide modifier, a +10 Move Silently modifier.

A battle buddy? You'll want This Variant (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#sorcererWizard), although don't bother if you expect the campaign to go longer than about 4th level.

For normal familiars, it's already been mentioned, the Hummingbird is amazing with its +4 Initiative bonus.

If you ever look into Improved Familiars, and you have the proper alignment, I highly recommend an imp familiar. They're devious and sneaky, and with self-Invisibility at-will, he makes for an excellent scout.

This is opinion, but I find they make excellent fun for RP as well. Remember: If your DM doesn't hate him by the end of the first session, you're not using him to his full potential. :smalltongue:

There are options other than a familiar. If you choose one, then gain a familiar with the Attain Familiar feat it will be stronger anyway.

I like beholderkin, mini-beholders that can deliver touch spells with an eyeray.

My fav familier ever is a Huitzil from Dragon Magic.

Tiny potbellied Dragons that pick peoples pockets are AWSOME.

Mind you if you go Imp familier then an Imp is better at everything. but from lvl 1 you cant beat this little gem.

***Note, we dont use dragon mag***

I apologise for making you explain, I hereby deduct manpoints from myself in penance. I see now in the url of the first image that it is labelled as a Huitzil, but this confuses me: How can they have the same name but be so radically different? Is WOTC being inconsistent again?

The first character is not from WotC at all, but from a Capcom fighting game called Darkstalkers. They just happen to have the same name. (Huitzil means "Hummingbird" in one of the Mexican languages spoken by the indigenous peoples there - Mayans or Incans, I forget which.)

I cannot shame myself further, lest I must commit seppuku. j/k

God i hate it when you have to explain why a joke you made is funny...

Logic would say the as you had to explain WHY, then it really wasnt that funny to begin with.

Yet I always have trouble swalowing that.
