Does anyone know of a good, free program, that can be used to create grids on the computer, like the kind you would make with a GM mat? It doesn't have to create really colorful and complex maps, just simple grids that you can edit so it is not just a simple grid. Thanks.

GIMP or maybe http://www.pixlr.com/ should be able to cover your needs.

I tried using gimp, but the file size for a map is huge if i want to put more than like a 10x10 grid.
Are there any programs out there that are specifically made for making grids like this?
EDIT: Nevermind, I figured out how to use GIMP to make a good, small file sized grid. I would still prefer a program made for creating grids, but GIMP will work.
Thanks

I've had great success using Excel for this (although not everyone has access to it). Nothing's faster for creating a grid, adding walls, marking where creatures are, and color-coding areas. With some creativity you can make some colorful spell-effect markers as well.
EDIT - example of a largish outdoor battle in progress (it's not just for dungeons).

+1 to the spreadsheet idea. I use OpenOffice for all of my maps. They turn out pretty good for my needs. Taking a screen shot and cropping out the unnecessary bits, you've also got a ready-made coordinate system.
The maps are also pretty easy to read.

I'll just defer to the previous poster. Seriously, that pic is amazing.

Thanks guys. Since I have access to Excel, I think i will use that. It seems simple enough.
Thanks again.
