Well... in Heroes of Horror it is described you can make a creature "soul-locked", best used in campaigns with little in the way of resurrection.

C'mon, I want to see about building characters that are mechanically immortal…

I was wondering where a link for that would be.

While I'm against fiat in general, it's quite fitting here. It's a common trope of villainy that fear of death motivates the plunge.

Hmm, wasn't there some example of a sorcerer who took out his heart and hid it and couldn't be killed as long as the heart was safe?

Did he keep it in a painting?

Vampire lords are functionally immortal. Even if they've been staked, bathed in sunlight, had their head cut off, and their ashes soaked in holy water, then burried in consecrated ground, they can come back to life if dried out. Kind of like reverse sea monkeys.

If you're talking about who I'm thinking of it's probably Koschei the Deathless (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koschei), he placed his soul in a needle that is in a duck that is in a hare that is in a chest buried under a tree on an island.

Mechanically, one of the more entertaining versions would be via an alliance with a deepspawn. Allow yourself to be devoured. Be spawned with all abilities intact once every few weeks. Refer to the deepspawn as "mom" and get a heart tattoo on your shoulder...

Find a way to store your core personality and memories outside your body, (I know there are a few ways but can't remember them offhand.)

Feed "mom" other powerful adventurers so that you have a nice brood of brothers and sisters to protect her/it.

Epic Monk. Maybe play him up as a fallen angel of inner peace or whatever.

A wizard astral projecting from a timeless plane.

A sentient magic item.

Any undead or construct.

A deity.
