Alright, one of my old players is joining a Star Wars game with me (that I won't be running for once, huzzah). However we just made the switch to Saga Edition because most of us wanted to try something new rather than d6, which was our go to game since we started roleplaying.

Anyhow the player is cool with this, however he has a rather complex character that may be hard getting into d20 style. Essentially he wants to be John Casey from the show Chuck, starting at level 3.

The character in question has 3 major traits going for him:
1 He's a weapons expert showing above average skill in everything from pistols to sniper rifles to miniguns
2 He's a spy, so he'd definitely have some scouting or information gathering abilities but is also definitely trained in (and possibly Skill Focused in) Deception based off of how many disguises he pulls.
3 He's an unarmed combat specialist

Like I said we're starting at level 3 and I don't think all of this will be available. However he wants to gain these as early as possible, and asks some questions such as is going into the Martial Artist or Elite Trooper prestige class worth it? And what good damage options are available with this template in mind? Any good feat/talent options?

There is 1 houserule that will probably be beneficial, when muli-classing into the three higher skill classes (Scout, Noble, Scoundrel) you can choose to gain a skill from their skill list instead of a starting feat.

Thank you all for you help.

What about a human Soldier 2/Scoundrel 1?
You could use Trace that allows you to make gather information checks with the use computer skill (soldier class skill) and Skill Training/Focus Deception when gaining the first scoundrel level.

1st level soldier: Weapon Focus/ Martial Arts/ Armored Defense
2nd level soldier: Shake it Off since he's a tough guy
3rd 1st level scoundrel: Point Blank*/ Trace/ Skill Training (Deception)

*1st level talent, with your houserule probably Skill Training (Deception) and Skill Focus as 3rd level feat.

Thank ya, that could probably get him started fair enough.

Any suggestions on where he should go with the build? No one in my group is much of an optimizer, so even the obvious stuff could be helpful

How does he want to play the character?

There you have me stumped. All I know is "like John Casey", I won't be seeing the player for a few days so I don't particularly know what he'd want to focus on. Any tips would be much obliged though.

I thought John Casey was soldier all the way, though he is an agent.

Probably, I was more referring to good feats to look for, or talents.

Also, is Elite Trooper worth it?

Yes, Elite Trooper is definitely worth it. +2 Ref, +4 Fort, 12d Hit, DR, and advanced soldier talents...

Almost all the PrC's in SE are worth something.

Interestingly enough, we have the same houserule for cross-class skills. Cool.

Does he actually plan on wearing armor. Cause armor investment is kind of "all or nothing" in SW. If he's not going to follow through (and I usually discourage it since it's so talent heavey, but well worth it if you're wanting that kind of character) then I wouldn't choose that as a talent. Just my first quick glance.

Disclaimer: haven't played SWSE in about a year, could be off on a few assumptions.

Opinion: SWSE is an amazing game and I'm glad you're playing it.

Fact: .......SWSE is an amazing game and I"m glad you're playing it.

Ahh thank you, I only questioned because replacing a feat with 1 DR didn't seem like too great an advantage. Also just realized that the Teras Masi Talent Tree was Elite Trooper so yeah, that pretty much covers everything about the character, thank you for your help.

If you start leveling in the Elite Trooper you should already have like 6-8 feats and you still gain one every three levels... You can still dip into Soldier again without any disadvantages.
