View Full Version : Haley's Pre-Order Adventures

I was just reading On the Origin of PCs again, and I got to wondering about what Haley did in the time before she joined the Order (but after she left the Thieves' Guild). Spoilers if you haven't read the prequel books.

We know the adventuring history of the other members a bit better. We saw Roy and Durkon in a party together, Elan being a squire to a paladin, and V was a student and never adventured before (Haley convinced him/her to give it a try). Belkar's history is a bit more vague, but he probably wasn't in any parties before winding up in jail, as working with any sort of team seems to be a very alien concept to him early on.

But Haley mentions that in the past six months as an adventurer, she has gained more levels than in 6 years as a burglar. So she's been out of the Guild for at least that long. What do you think she did in that time? Presumably she had a party (she implies as much when she mentions an adventure "where we're fighting kobolds"). She also seemed surprised when Roy asked to see her Thieves' Guild ID, and had to quickly forge one; apparently her last party didn't care.
So anyone have any fun theories about what our favorite rogue got up to for six months?

I have run a few thieves in my games I have never been asked to show a guild membership card. The DM I run with is brutal on his players so the joke is Roy being (god how) Lawful (are you people) good would even ask.

Other wise I am glad to see your brain is intact after the booty pop (http://www.buybootypop.com/scripts/cgiip.exe/WService=bootypop/story.html) incendent

I understand that Haley wants a pair!!

She picked a fight with a PC (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0581.html) thus she gained so many levels.

That doesn't work if you're a PC yourself.

But are characters considered PCs in non-narrated pre-stories? As I understand it, the PC status is to the OOTs members by virtue of being protagonists in a world that litteraly revolves around a story being told, so prior to the start of that story, they could not have PC status!

The PC-status in the game makes sense, but makes no sense at all in the OotS-world. Apparently, PCs are protagonists that stand vs. some evil but really... it makes no sense at all.

Consider it a joke or something that is there, but makes no sense. Thinking over it too much will only cause your ears to bleed.

Belkar did adventure before, with the ant-man dude qho wanted to eat his animal companion.

What?

No, he knew the guy. Where did you get the impression that they'd adventured together? Neither of them ever say that.

Adventurers can have friends, you know.

the ant man dude was the guy that belkar sold to (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0685.html).

Third panel second ballon shows that Belkar was the middle man. They were friends and drinking buddies so in a D and D world at some point you adventure, loot, raid every NPC you end up meeting.

...That doesn't say anything about them adventuring together. You can be someone's drinking buddy without going out and killing stuff with them.

I think it's safe to say they involved Koblods, copper pieces, and a potion of Barkskin.

Given that everyone that she knew in the Thieves' Guild was a jerk -- at least according to her (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0603.html), which is what counts here -- it seems like a safe bet that Haley's abandonment issues (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0311.html) came from her time as and adventurer.

It's not a safe bet at all, since Haley's mother left (in whatever sense that ends up being) when Haley was a small girl.

The actions of one person seem insufficient to form the generalization "Everyone really good leaves me". And given that Haley was much younger and probably quite different in personality from now, and the likelihood that her mother's departure was involuntary, it seems very unlikely to have ever been the sole basis for the assumption "Everyone really good leaves me once they get to know me".

Granted, it may have been a contributing factor, and indeed it's hard to see why Haley's Self-Loathing would mention it if it weren't. But it seems that Haley must not have developed this particular form of paranoia until later, in order for anyone else to have gotten close to her in the first place.

Didn't Haley's mother die? "Mommy went to heaven last year" is what she told the old woman in comic #681.

There exists a theory that Haley will prove to be part-outsider. The advocates of that theory generally interpret "went to Heaven" literally and as not involving death.

Sounds a little odd, but okay. Would Haley be part-Eladrin then? Since she's Chaotic Good?

Alignment in OotS is more free than the rulebooks make us believe. She's a PC on top of that, so her align is no indicator for the race or kind of her parents.

Yes, but in 3.5, eladrin are the CG spirits or something, right? So if Haley was descended from extraplanar creatures, they would probably be eladrin.

Don't look at me, I think the theory's profoundly silly and she's all human.

Agreed. It probably only cropped up because Haley's archnemesis (Sabine) is an outsider, so it would be more balanced if Haley was too.

I'd so buy a book of Haley's adventurers and the lots of inner Haleys. It would be a very nice work on a good character, and can also be funny (and fan-servicey) as can be, since it's done by The Giant.

I'm pretty sure that strip is saying that the harp-playing theif, whatever her name is, wishes she could be like *Crystal* and pick a fight with a PC *Like Haley*, thus, becoming a personal rival and gaining free levels for the PC's work.

I keep thinking of that strip at the end of No Cure for the Paladin Blues, with Haley advertising DCF and Origins, only instead Haley would be advertising stuff that hasn't come out yet.

I think they know that, they were just (jokingly) saying that Haley picked a fight with a PC in order to gain levels.

Just wait until she re-encounters said PC.

Theoretically speaking, Haley could be a NPC in another 'campaign' within the same setting. To keep getting levels, she just has to show up in that 'campaign' briefly from time to time so that the 'DM' doesn't discard her.

Plot hypothetical

She'll probably depart mysteriously for a brief period of time later on.

Perhaps she beat a high level monster, or was a member of an adventuring party for a shortime before joining the Order.

Probably. Perhaps if there's a new prequel book it'd show her adventures before the Orders. I think in "On the Origin of PCs" it shows V and Haley meeting.

I seem to remember them talking and drinking together as if they know each other already, but don't say how.
