Rules:

We will use the 5th Ed, 2008 rules, freely available from Wizards of the Coast website here: Diplomacy rulesbook PDF (http://www.wizards.com/avalonhill/rules/diplomacy_rulebook.pdf). (There is also a "Five Minute Guide" version available here: Diplomacy Condensed Rules (http://www.wizards.com/avalonhill/rules/Diplomacy_FiveMinGuide.pdf).)

Turns:

Please send me your moves to me by PM before the deadline. Announcing what move you intend to make is legal (as is lying about what move you intend to make) but any moves posted here and not PMed to me will not be considered.

Any unit not given a move will be assumed to be holding.

If a unit is given two or more moves, the latest move submitted before deadline counts.

Conditional moves will be accepted. For example: "If I succeed in taking this supply centre, please place my new army X", etc... You are encouraged to do this when you expect to gain / lose supply centres, or where you could conceivably be forced to retreat.

Please mark move orders "Preliminary" or "Final".
Preliminary moves are your backup plan, if no final moves are sorted out.
Final moves are the moves you wish to make that turn. However, they may be amended any time before adjudication starts.

Adjudication will now start either: (1) At the pre-stated deadline or (2) When all active players have sent final moves (whichever is earlier). This will allow a faster pace to be adopted if it suits. Once adjudication starts, no more moves will be accepted for that turn.

Surrender of units:
If you PM me indicating a move along the lines of "A Smyrna to be controlled by the Dutch player" then I will accept moves the Dutch player sends for that army. You will still get credit for the move, however. This means - if you are away, but have a strong alliance and you trust another player, you can ensure co-ordination of forces or you can use it to surrender to another player.

Anonymous messages
If you want to publish anonymous messages, include them with your move and they will be published on the move list, unattributed to any player. You may find this helpful for diplomatic situations (you may also find evil uses for them). Private anonymous messages may be relayed via my inbox too, and will be forwarded at adjudication.

Timescale:

DIPLOMACY PHASE: 4 days. Since most of this will happen via PM, IRC or other non-public channels this is basically impossible to enforce.
MOVE PHASE: 1 day.
MOVE RESOLUTION PHASE: I aim to have this done within 1 hour of deadline.
RETREAT AND DISBAND PHASE: 1 day.
GAIN OR LOSE UNITS PHASE: 1 day.

Absenteeism: The rulebook has rules for this. Any unit with no move submitted will be assumed to hold. A unit required to retreat with no retreat order given will be assumed to be disbanded. A player required to disband a unit for other reasons who fails to make a choice will have the unit furthest from their home disbanded.

Making treaties with each other: There are three different ways to handle an agreement between players:

1. Public - Post in this thread what you agreed to do: "Player A and player B have agreed to co-operate to secure control of area of the board X" and such.

2. Private - Post that "Player A and Player B have an agreement" with no further detail.

3. Secret - Don't post anything about it and keep everyone in the dark.

I'm hoping to write a "game report" at the end. To this end, I'll ask that secret or private agreements are forwarded to me via PM (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/member.php?u=49745), where they'll A: Be kept secret until the end of the game, and B: Inform the game report, so you can see who the wheelers and dealers were at the end of it all.

Use of this thread: Informing the players of treaties made, and any public negotiations between players. (Please stick to the forum rules.) Please no commentary until the game is over. Move lists each turn will also be posted here, but I will ask that moves be PMed to me. Moves posted in this thread will not be considered.

The chess game is in here. I figured diplomacy was closer chess than an RPG.

If it has been misforumed, I'm sure it will be moved.

I was in another Diplomacy game that used the In/Out of character boards, but this is more a board game than an RPG, so it seems fair to have it here.

The best place for diplomacy is in structured games. There have actually been 3 games down there already.

Really the chess threads should be there too. A lot of things that clearly belong in structured games don't actually get put in there.

Yes, you can, Euros.

err opps I forgot I was in this. However I do think that a 3 hour warning is too little time. We all have lives to live.

I would have posted a reminder earlier than that, but was away and didn't have internets. I'll try to post a reminder at around 24 hours before the move ends, but may occasionally forget or be unable to.

I should also mention that conditional moves are accepted for the add/remove units phase, and the retreat phase. This will be pretty useful for keeping the game moving when you anticipate capturing a supply centre or are worried about being forced to retreat.

Another question, that I could probably look up but don't want to since those rules are a bit labyrinthine: Could a convoy cross between Venezia and Tuscany? Say you had fleets in Venezia, Tuscany, and the Gulf of Lyon, could you convoy a unit from Trieste to Spain?

As long as the fleets are actually in the Adriatic, Gulf of Lyon and Tyr. sea, then I believe it's possible.

Ok, so the add / remove units phase 1901 is over. Here's what happened:

Austria gained armies in Trieste and Budapest.
England gained a fleet in London.
France gained an army in Paris, and a fleet in Brest.
Germany gained an army in Berlin, and a fleet in Kiel.
Italy placed a fleet in Napoli.
Turkey didn't submit anything.

Coups in the East!

After a year of civil unrest, strong leaders have now emerged in Russia and Turkey. Murska become the new Tsar of Russia, and Nailuj has emerged in control after a coup. Nailuj said "Turkey will be one of the greatest superpowers the world has ever seen!" and Murska released a statement saying "That will teach the old leader for always stealing my lunch money at school."*

They intend to lead their respective countries to greatness in Europe, and extend a hand of friendship to all willing to aid them.*

Capt Spanner

Thanks, that's now been corrected. MS Paint is not the ideal tool for maintaining the map...

For those unsure, if information conflicts, the "Moves so far" list takes precedence over other sources of information, though I welcome corrections to other information, naturally.

(In other news, I'm thinking of getting rid of the "List of unit positions" and replacing it with a list of controlled supply centres. The former doesn't add anything you couldn't get from the map and is kinda tricky to maintain, while the former may actually be useful sometimes. Any major objections to this?)

I hated everyone long before this game. Does that mean I have an advantage? :smalltongue:

F Bot - Swe
A Sev - Arm
F Rum - Bla
A Gal - Rum
A War Holds

Also, I wish to amend the movement procedure as follows:

1. Please mark move orders "Preliminary" or "Final".
Preliminary moves are your backup plan, if no final moves are sorted out.
Final moves are the moves you wish to make that turn. However, they may be amended any time before adjudication starts.

2. Adjudication will now start either: (1) At the pre-stated deadline or (2) When all active players have sent final moves (whichever is earlier). This will allow a faster pace to be adopted if it suits.

A couple of other things you may wish to take advantage of:

2. Public messages: If you want to publish anonymous messages, include them with your move and they will be published on the move list, unattributed to any player. You may find this helpful for diplomatic situations (you may also find evil uses for them).

Next phase: Autumn 1904 Diplomacy
Phase ends: 10th September 2010
Deadline for moves: 11th September 2010.

Wait, let me confirm. A fleet in York supported a fleet in Clyde into Liverpool? But a fleet in York can't actually reach Liverpool? Or Clyde for that matter? :smallconfused:

Thrice Dead Cat
2010-09-12, 02:09 PM
Sadly, it looks like the official rule is that although a fleet in York cannot move itself into Liverpool, it can still do "cover fire" to aid the fleet in Clyde into getting into Liverpool.

EDIT: Also, I definitely think we should get new players for Turkey and Italy.

King of England is dead! Long live the King of Italy!

Capt Spanner

England Falls

The once proud island nation of England has fallen to French and German rule. However, armies sacking the main cities failed to find the English leader who has escaped through means unknown, although a man in a blue police box is suspected to be involved. Not that anyone can find the blue police box either. Eye-witnesses say the man and Starfols just escaped into the box, which vanished into thin air.

Italy has a new leader

And he bears a remarkable resemblance to the missing English leader. He even has the same name! The man, known as Starfols, arrived in Italy and appealed to the people to unite against threats in Europe. The Italians responded "Yes, our old leader hasn't been acting. Off with his head! All hail Starfols!" And Starfols said "Excellent, now bring me some pizza."

When asked for comment, the new Italian leader said "Mmm....wow! This pizza is delicious!"

And finally...

Swiss scientists have invented a harness that can be placed on cows, which automatically milks them, thus saving farmers money. The price of Swiss milk has sky-rocketed in response.

Oh, and build build order:

Austria builds an army in Trieste.
France build a fleet in Marseilles.
Germany build an army in Munich.
Russia built a fleet in St. Petersburg (SC), an army in Moscow and an army in Warsaw.

We are now in the Spring 1905 diplomatic phase.
Phase ends 17th September 2010.
Deadline for moves is 18th September 2010.

umm yeah can we get an updated map again please? but really you shouldnt change moves in after you have changed the phase, because in all honesty my moves would have been different but it doesn't matter. it probably doesnt affect anyone else though so meh.

Murska
2010-09-26, 10:04 AM
Play them off against each other, then?

Anyway, yeah... I was trying to ally with Turkey, but he was afk. Then I tried to help Italy stand against the French fleets, but he was afk. Austria is at least playing, but doesn't respond to any messages. And Germany and France are attacking me.

There's not much Diplomacy going on here, is there?

EDIT: As for Norway and Sweden, Norway is commonly assumed to belong to the English and Sweden is commonly assumed to belong to Russia. I claim joining the game late here aswell, since Sweden is almost always where Russia gains it's build in the first Fall.

I conquered Norway fair and square, and took Sweden as per our agreement with Germany, especially since it's supposed to belong to me anyway. When I send someone a PM detailing 'we do this and then I take center X and you take center Y' and you want to keep center X, you're best off saying 'I'll keep center X' instead of going along quietly and then getting angry the next turn.

Umm... No.

I don't know what rules you've read, but the only way to win Diplomacy is to gain 18 centers. If no player reaches 18, it's a tie between those still alive, while if someone is still alive once a player reaches 18 that player loses.

Stop. I should have a build too from Belgium too no?

You lost Edinburgh despite betraying me for some unfathomable reason. Again.

Indeed. I put a summary of how many supply centres were gained and lost and where specifically to make such calculations easy. (It's in the "Summary of last move" section - which also lists any moves that failed and any units that have been forced to retreat.)

And shouldnt Russia have to disband possibly? I dont think so since he had an extra build.

No. At the last build Russia gained four supply centres but only three units. Losing a supply centre means Russia now has equal number of units and supply centres.

So now:
{table=head]Supply centres|Units
StP|StP
Mos|Lvn
War|War
Ste|Bal
Lvp|Lvp
Den|Den
Rum|Rum
Ser|Ser
Bul|Alb
Gre|Ion
Con|Con
Ank|Gal
Smy|MAO
13|13[/table]

No disband needed.

Because your options are:

Try to win, and almost certainly get second place while I win.
Give up winning, leaving it up to me and France whether we want a two-way or a three-way tie.

And I've helped you much more during this game than anyone else, like, say, France.

So why do you refuse to even try to win? It doesn't take a genius to see that your only chance for that is to attack both me and France, slowing me down while grabbing the weak and undefended centers he has.

For France... Yeah, well, unless I give up you're not going to be able to kill me before 2011.

Yeah, I am pretty undefended, but that's Diplomacy for you. Stabs happen. I mean, things are going well in Italy for me now, so troops can rebase shortly and the chance that this power trio flies around is still in the air.

Yeah. But stop being all level-headed here while I'm trying to prod fun at Germany. :smalltongue:

I still don't quite understand why you squeezed over half of your entire powerbase into Italy. You could've taken it with half that number and now you're gonna have to squeeze through Venice, kill off Austria and take me on. It's gonna take forever.

Oh, and Germany: Stop trying to claim you're playing for victory if you don't have the guts to risk losing to pursue your one chance at winning. That's playing for tie at most. 'not dying to Russia' does not victory make.

EDIT: What about this: We play until the end of this year, and then end the game uti possidetis?

Imagine world history with Russia controlling part of Britain, Portugal, Balkans, Turkey and some of Austria, Germany controlling Vienna and Scandinavia and France having taken over Italy and most of Britain? :smalltongue:

Retreats are:

French fleet from Tyrhennian Sea to West Med.
German army from Kiel to Berlin.

Autumn 1909: diplomatic phase ends 21st November.
Moves by 22nd please.

Deathslayer7
2010-11-24, 11:38 AM
so what your saying is that, I have armies surronding Germany from the Noth all the way to the West. I also have some fleets to the North. I want you Germany, to stop attacking me and retreat.

Thrice Dead Cat
2010-11-24, 04:52 PM
Germany has a point, there really only are three of us left. So, you're basically asking him to sit still and let you win, Murska.

Murska
2010-11-24, 05:40 PM
Well, you're asking him to sit still and let you win. Why is it more important for him to attack Russia and let France win than to attack France and let Russia win? At least by attacking France he'd gain supply centers. By attacking Russia, he's bashing his head into my wall of armies, while I'm bashing my wall of armies against his head and France is laughing. If he were to attack France, he'd be bashing his head against France's soft unprotected underbelly, while France would be going all 'oof!' and doubling over, and I'd be laughing.

If you've got no choices that'd help yourself, why not pick the choice that'd let you do something?

Deathslayer7
2010-11-24, 06:20 PM
beacuse as im bashing France's underbelly, your bashing my back. so either way I dont win. So it's a lose-lose situation for me. So then why not cut you down to France's playing field and let you two duke it out. I like that idea. :smallamused:

question: why is Vienna not at Galicia. It had Bohemia and Silesia support. I know both were cut, but the attack that cut the bohemia support was Galicia-Bohemia. So as the army moves there, wouldn't my army move into Galicia without any trouble since nothing is opposing it as Murska didnt have anything moving or supporting Galicia?

Capt Spanner
2010-11-28, 10:36 PM
A stand-off occurs and the army in Galacia doesn't move, creating a stand-off with the army in Vienna which, without support, can't dislodge the army in Galacia.

Deathslayer7

Deathslayer7
2010-11-29, 11:57 AM
So just another quick question: wouldn't the same thing happen at Denmark, since Denmark moved to Baltic where i moved Kiel to Denmark but then he moved back. But by that time i was already there, so shouldnt it be dislodged too?

And if that is true than Kiel should be in denmark and holland should be in Kiel.

Murska
2010-11-29, 01:06 PM
You hit France in the Baltic. I didn't even try to move there.

Also, I think there's a French fleet missing from West Med.

Deathslayer7
2010-11-29, 02:10 PM
I know. But it's the same principle isn't it?

Denmark - Baltic
Prussia- Baltic
Kiel - Denmark

Murska
2010-11-29, 02:16 PM
No? Denmark collided with Berlin in the Baltic. There was a stand-off, so the fleet in Denmark didn't actually go anywhere. Then you attacked it from Kiel with only one unit, and didn't manage to dislodge it since defender has an advantage.

ok. the way i see it was this. Denmark went and attacked Baltic but there was a stand off. I went and attacked Denmark and it was free, since the moves would happen simultaneously. From there, Blatic moves back to Denmark just to find it taken and is dislodged.

But that still doesnt make sense though. Going by your way what you are saying is that Denmark moved and attacked Baltic as did I but also defended Denmark from an attack by Kiel. So in theory it basically shut down my two armies to his one.

I don't have anything against it but I'm just trying to wrap my mind around this concept.

Murska
2010-11-29, 04:11 PM
That's exactly how it works. That's why standoffing two of your own armies lets you hold three spots at once.

"Hey mom? What's a French Army?"
"It's like Santa Claus."
"Like dad in a red suit and a big fake beard?"
"...let's go with that."

Maybe they were anticipating the glorious French Army to come near the city and then run back to York in terror without firing a shot, like always? :smalltongue:

Clearly the issue is that that army consists of the native British troops. Freaking Limeys couldn't safe their homeland, but at least they're trying to get Liverpool back to their benevolent rulers on the mainland.

There will be a Christmas break, so you don't have to worry about move deadlines.

The timeline for the restart is:

January 2nd: Spring 1912 diplomatic phase resumes.
January 5th: Spring 1912 diplomatic phase ends and I post a 24 hour warning notice.
January 6th (midnight GMT): Deadline for moves, and adjudication.

Could Starfols please PM me at some point to re-assure me they're still playing.

Merry Christmas all!
