Breet examines the various job offers and other posting on the board. He will find something interesting as soon as he is more specific about that for which he is looking.

Breet scratched at his new elvish ears in annoyance. They felt heavy and big.

"Could poke someone's eyes out with these things" he thought in disgust. "Not natural at all"

Breet looked over several different postings but his eyes kept going back to missions of a less than honest nature. He figured he was best off with some sort of shady job or assassination work.

"I'm not the best in a fight" he thought to himself "But who has to fight fair?

Very few people publicly advertise the hiring of assassins through posting fliers; however, Breet does find one post requesting someone who "specializes in problem resolution and removal." It gives an address but no name.

Ah-ha! Why 'problems' are my middle name.

Breet does his best to memorize the address, while making an effort to look over all the postings and pretending to take notice of a different job completely.

Breet leaves the inn, and walks further up the street to try and find the guard he saw earlier milling around.

Breet spots the guard with little difficulty. He is still leaning against the same building on the same street corner. He still has the same blank stare and slight smirk from before.

"Excuse me sir, do you know where I could find this address?" He smiles at the guard and recites back the address.

"Why yes, yes I do."

He looks at you for a moment.

"Oh! You want me to direct you there. I suppose that would make sense."

He gives you directions to the address, which is located in a fashionable part of Old Town.

"Thank you!" Breet calls out to the guard as he heads off down the street.

He eagerly walks with a brisk pace down the streets, taking in the sights and trying to get the lay of the land. He tries to make his way using the directions the guard provided.

You were around the man crossroads of the city. Old Town occupies the south-eastern quarter of the city. Arriving at the address, you find a two story bed and breakfast type inn which seems to have been converted from an older home.

Unsure if he should knock or not, Breet decides its best to play it safe.

He knocks on the door twice loudly but not impolitely. While he waits, he takes a look up and down the street to see if anyone had followed him.

Rizban

No one seems to be paying any attention to him. The door is not opened, though it does seem unlocked, and voices can be heard from nearby inside.

Breet sighs inwardly and opens the door to enter the inn.

"I wonder what this job is.. might be wasting my time if its to kill rats in the basement or something equally mundane.."

"I wonder what this job is.. might be wasting my time if its to kill rats in the basement or something equally mundane.."

Funny story about that...

You see three men sitting around a table drinking hard cider and laughing at some joke. A young girl of about 14 waves at your from behind a counter at the far wall. She seems to be the one in charge of the place.

"Oh! You'll want to talk to my dad. He's in the back through there." She grins at you as she points to a door leading, presumably, to the kitchen.

"Okay thank you!" Breet answers in a happy tone. He turns towards the men drinking and sizes them up. He tips his steel helm at them as he passes with a gleaming smile.

He moves to the back towards the kitchen door. He instinctively puts his hand on the hilt of his rapier expecting a trap.

"Ick cider... barbarians" he thinks to himself.

OOC

See if anything is out of place with the drinking men:

You notice nothing out of place with the guests. You pass through the door into a narrow hallway with several doors leading off of it. Directly in front of you is an open door leading into a kitchen. A tall man is standing there sharpening a knife, staring at you with distrust.

"Somethin' I can help you with?"

"Hello there good sir! I understand you are offering work? Your daughter sent me back here.." Breet offered, trying to explain his presence.

Breet pulls his hand away from his rapier to wave at the man.

"umm come again? rats? I'm a little new in town, is that slang for something?" Breet asks. He takes a moment for it all the sink in.

Resigning himself Breet asks "Umm how big are these rats and how many are you looking to have 'problem-solved'?"

OOC:

omg rats really? Obviously I've made a mistake somewhere.

Hey, give it a chance... There are actually four different ways this can go that I've already thought out, but I'm sure you could come up with yet another alternative if you really thought about it.

"They're about three to four feet tall and carry nasty little knives. They've dug a hole from the sewers into our basement and are using our place as a staging point for raids. They swore to kill us if we sought help, but we can't live like this anymore. They don't seem too smart on their own, so if you kill their leader, I'm sure they can be driven off."

Breet

"four feet tall, armed with knives? " Breet wonders aloud. Maybe this wasn't below his interest.

"I'm going to need more information." Breet states. His mind swirling with possibilities.

"First things first" Breet smiles forgetting his manners."You can call me Altass if you like...What is your name, good sir, and that of your charming daughter?"

"How many rats are there? Are they raiding to steal stuff or obtain food or randomly kill people?"

"How long have they been coming into your basement?"

"Do the follower rats talk or just the leader?"

Breet asks his questions almost rapid fire.

Rizban
2010-07-12, 07:06 PM
"I'm Alban, and my daughter is Hertha. I fear they've already heard me asking for help and will kill us tonight. The rat things already killed her mother...

I don't know how many there are or what they take. They just drag big bags of something back into the sewers with them. I never see more than one or two at a time, but you can hear their horrid squeaking at night. It sounds like hundreds of the beasts.

They've been using our basement for almost four weeks now, ever since they dug the exit from the sewers.

I don't think most of them know Common, but some of them know enough of it to threaten us.

I've only seen their leader once. He was just over five feet tall and solid white where the rest are brown and black."

Breet

"I'm sorry about your wife..." he trails off. "It sounds like you should close your doors for the rest of the day in case things get dangerous. A few silver here and there isn't worth risking patron's lives. Just put up a sign, closed for renovations or something" Breet suggests motioning towards the other room.

"I'm going to need some supplies if I'm going to help you, probably take me an hour to round up. I hate to sound like a mercenery but we should discuss payment. I'll also need directions to the nearest dry goods store and weapon smithy please."

Rizban
2010-07-12, 08:50 PM
"You'll want to look over on Broad Street for a good weaponsmith. Due east of here is the Market Plaza, which should have a booth or two with what you need other than weapons. The shops on Broad Street have better goods though."

"If I were to resolve this problem for you, how much are you willing to pay?" Breet asks.

Rizban
2010-07-13, 11:17 PM
"I make little enough out of this place, but I'll pay you what I can afford and still feed my daughter and myself. You're free to keep any loot you pick up, and they're sure to have some as much as they've been raiding."

Breet

"Sounds reasonable." Breet says though a little disappointed.

"I'll be back very shortly with some supplies. In the meantime you should clear out the guys drinking the cider. You don't want them to overhear any squeeking. Word could get around about the rat problem and you'd never sell food or drink again. Besides if things don't go as I plan, they could be hurt." Breet advises.

Breet tips his helm 'goodbye' and gives the owner a hopeful smile. Breet leaves the inn to run some of his errands.

"hmm rats with hands and four feet tall.."he thinks to himself trying to remember if that is familar.

[roll0]

Not sure if I should role play this out or just list it.

1. buy an alchemical silver rapier price 30 gp. He won't try to haggle as he is pressed for time.

2. Buy 1 lb of cheese price 1 gold??

3. Tear down the 'help wanted' note from the first inn if he hadn't already.

Rizban
2010-07-15, 05:17 PM
If you're purchasing generic goods at source listed prices, then just list them out. It is assumed you either know where to purchase them or can find someone who knows relatively quickly. Magical items and 'illicit' goods, such as poisons, uncommon goods, such as mounts, transport, and spellcasting, and anything else not in the PHB, such as the purchase of housing (which is totally supported in AvB), must be roleplayed or at least discussed with your DM.

Ragnarok'n'Roll
2010-07-15, 05:25 PM
Thought so, otherwise it could drag down the game. 'Purchase' housing? how quaint. Might be easier to kill the owner of an inn and his daughter and shack up there........

Breet returns to the inn a short time later, looking for Alban.

"It's time you showed me to your basement good sir" Breet announces drawing his new silvered shortsword."

Rizban
2010-07-15, 05:30 PM
The problem with that plan is that the inn is the first place that will be searched if they wind up missing. Not to mention the legal trouble for not having the deed in your name... In short, you're free to try it, but don't expect it to work out in your favor in the end.

Shortsword or rapier? You said both, and there is a slight difference...

"Yeah, sure, it's through there."

He points to a door with several broken lock and deadbolts hanging from it. It appears he tried several times to lock it shut to no avail. He then escorts his daughter into the larder, enters behind her, and shuts the door. You hear the sound of several large, heavy objects being moved to bar the door.

In a muffled voice, "Let us know when it's safe to come out."

OOC:

In all seriousness, killing someone for just a place to sleep isn't worth it risk/reward wise by a long shot -no matter how well you plan it.

short sword - it's significantly cheaper. Sorry for the confusion.

Breet

Breet draws his shortsword and lights a sunrod. He takes a deep breath and enters the basement.

"Curses, wish I was an actual elf. Can't be stealthy if you can't see" he moans quietly to himself.

Rizban

The only difference between the two is price and 1 on the crit range.

Can you also link me to your sheet again. I seem to have lost the link.

The basement is strewn with broken crates, refuse, and offal. It seems that the rats have been using this as a place to sleep as well as a place of egress from the sewers.

You see a small opening in the wall near the floor of one corner. It is partially obscured by the remains of a straw mattress.

A terrible explosion suddenly rocks the entire city, and the ground shakes as if an earthquake were tearing the city apart. The sky lights up from a blast many times the brightness of the sun, and you are certain that certain death has at last come to claim you. As the brightness fades, you look toward the Mages' Quarter and see the last remnants of the horror burning directly towards the sky in a seemingly endless stream of raw, burning mana which threatens to tear reality asunder. What seems like an eternity passes as you stare, though it is likely only a few seconds, and at last the blast fades away. In the distance, you hear a building collapse, and you are certain that something horrible has been unleashed upon the city.
