Is (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/member.php?u=1711) this (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/member.php?u=5268) a (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/member.php?u=13081) joke (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/member.php?u=17023)?

All four have join dates that say 2017. Is that...bad?

Hey, at least I know now, for sure, that the world won't end in 2012. :smalltongue:

Excepting the third one, they were all last active in 1969. They also all joined within two days of one another.

On the same note...guest in the playground (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1397192&postcount=6)? There used to be guests?

Wow, looking at the threads from 2004 makes me want to pester Vorpal Tribble about what it was like :smalltongue:

Weird problem though. Computer error? How'd you find it?

I was looking through the members list and clicked on join date. I was curious to see if the last joining member on the list would match the one on the bottom of the main page. Then I saw those four all at 2017.

Time-Traveling Mod Conspiracy...

The above is a joke. Time travel is impossible and I will go back to my fun. I wish you all a good day, especially the mods. Who cannot time travel.

Many computer clocks begin counting time on January 1st, 1970, and store the number of days since that date. For a quick example, January 5th 1970 would be stored as "5" in the database, and the software knows how to convert the number into a date. So when a database stores a date of "-1" it tends to display as December 31, 1969. -1 is generally used as a default value when something is required but there's no actual value to enter.

Actually, it's usually stored as the number of seconds since midnight on that date. With the usual amount of memory used to store such things (4 bytes, or 32 bits), that can store any time from late in 1902 to early in 2038. I sincerely hope that we do a thorough enough job of shifting to 64 bits for everything before then, or the 2038 bug will make Y2K seem trivial. After that, well, I will be surprised, to say the least, if any legacy system survives 292 billion years to the point where 64 bit timekeeping would run out.

This server is running with Posix time, and it's epoch is 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970.
And it will run out of space to represent time properly on 2038. :3

Just a note, the member who joined most recently won't always be the most recent on the member's list because the member's list only logs posters who have at least 1 post.
