this thread was inspired by this right here

We had a 4-person party in a low-level (3 or 4) 3.5 campaign. We had a cleric, two fighters, and a rogue, all of whom were short characters. We called our party "The Mighty Short Bus"....

I became intrigued, "how many people name their parties?" "what inspires them?" (both the names and the players) My group has yet to have a named party... but I greatly curious

what names (if any)
have your parties had?

Ours happened by coincidence. We had a monk, a druid and a I was a wizard. It began with a church of Nobanion that was being corrupted by a demon cult and our druid, a Druid of Malar, was sent over to investigate. The final battle was with a fiendish Dire Lion anda priest of the demon. The monk did the finishing blow on the lion and we skinned it and he used it as a uniform/costume whatever. No game mechanical effect. A portion of its face draped over his shoulder.

A few levels later, we had to fight a copper dragon with bard levels who had gone insane and was seducing young men and holding them captive and dominated for her own personal sexual harem. We killed the dragon, because we failed the diplomacy challenge and the druid asked if he can use the scales to make armor. The DM said there was enough for a shield too. So he did. He used the face of the dragon as a heavy shield

So we realized that we had a lion and a dragon. we realized that we were a goat short of a chimera. So I went to the market, bought a goat and killed it with my dagger. I made a cap from its horns.

From then on, we were called Chimera.

In another game, Transylvania Chronicles in oWoD Dark Ages, the guy who played brujah was awarded princedom of Bistritz(sp?) because he was the most charismatic. There was five of us in the coterie so we called ourselves the Hand of Bistritz.

I’m playing in an unusual campaign at the moment. In the city we are in, there are a large number of individual player characters (aprox. 50) with their own agendas. There are only 6 players, but we each own a different split of these characters.

Each session we play a different group of them, and different characters join and leave different groups according to the in game happenings. Some characters don’t see eye to eye.

Anyway, several groups have formed with their own names. Some are less interesting such as: the West Guard, The Steel Scales, etc. But two are fairly interesting.

The first, the Angelics, is lead by a half-celestial elf. They have a sponsor, a rich merchant. They have press conferences, a distinctive outfit supplied by a tailor, only eat (for free) at a specific tavern and probably are going to end up having a ticker-tape parade. They are known by everybody, and even have toy replicas being made of them (action figures!). Despite this, they do less adventuring and more publicising. The name came from the merchant when she decided that we needed a strong defining name that would be remembered by all and promote good will towards us.

The second group is feared and avoided. Known as the Death Squad, they have a reputation for killing and destroying everything that gets in their way. Lead by a chaotic Thri-Kreen, they actually aren’t as evil or blood thirsty as everybody believes.

A group of misfits of various unusual races, their leader loves a good fight, but has trouble telling the difference between a ‘monster’ and a ‘person’. More often than not, the Death Squad has tried to make friends with red caps, bone devils and other less friendly creatures. When these attempts fail, they usually kill the creatures to the man, hence were the name originally came from; people discovered the group covered in blood, standing in the middle of a killing field and the thri-kreen would smile through a blood soaked face and wave, with all four arms.

We once had a game, it was a weekly saturday game run at the local game store. One of the characters (The "Torch Bearer" xD) created a "party charter" That had to be signed by every player. We were named the "Rah-Kin" party. xD

I can't remember if any of these were actually used, or if we just tossed them around as possibilities, but here they are anyway:

Those Guys
Not From Around Here
Collateral Damage Specialists

Oddly enough, both groups of PCs which have been named in games I have participated in (one on the player side, one as DM) have been named after their successful attempts to disguise themselves as circus performers, despite the fact that I am the only person in both groups and did not inform the second of the first at all. In my first campaign as a player, our party used hats of disguise to flee the city masquerading as a band of elvish gypsies, and so we became known as the Elvish Gypsies (we weren't that creative). In a recent campaign that I ran, my players traveled to a potentially hostile town as the Pink Pudding Traveling Circus, and spent several thousand gold on an elaborate disguise and performed a fantastically successful show that brought in less than 200 gold, before expenses .

I've played in a few named parties:

The Hammers: from the village of Littleham.
The B@st@rd Squad: originally "The Flying Squad", but they earned a reputation for being, well...
Damage Incorporated: yes, it was just as I was getting into metallica.
The Trophy Takers: rep earned through skinning and otherwise dismembering slain monsters, and having them made into trophies and/or items of clothing.
Toad's Heroes: named after the vain Beguiler in the party, who had absolutely no claim to being the party leader (he was a Goblin, formerly a Grey Elf who died and got Reincarnated as a Goblin. Shortly thereafter he got Baleful Polymorphed into a toad by a magical trap, and hence took on a new nickname).

I know the feeling! I really think our D&D group should have a name by now, but nothing's stuck yet...

The Company of the Smoking Crater.

We stopped getting invited into cities after a while.

our groups never even thrown any out there

aside from..... one :smallannoyed:

the party consists of
Me: Dwarf Rogue (who has a halfling official on his hit list for making me fight a whole encounter with my sap for no reason)*
Buddy: Human "samurai" (fighter with katana)
aquaitance A: caster of some sort
aquaintance B: ranger?

now, for purposes of this discussion and ease of communication, I shall now give you the personalities of these characters by comparing them to the OOTS members

Dwarf Rogue - combo of Haley/Belkar
Human fighter - "roy"
Caster: Varsuuvious + Elan
Ranger: -no appropriate match- (Belkarish)

how does my buddy refer to the group?
as "our order of the stick group"

Harsh. That's sillier than just "our D&D group", which seems more accurate. You should try throwing some out, something might stick! That's my plan anyway.

I know, and my mind percolates on it often... but....

nothing has come up yet. I want it to fit, and I want to be able to put it on a buisnesscard (or at least a banner)

sooo as appealing as "the smoking crater brigade" is to me as a person

I'm afraid Roche the Lawful Good Dwarven Knight might take issue with it...

the rest of the party, I'm sure would be all for it however....

A group I'm playing with on these forums are unofficially the 'Sex Handcrossbows'.

The 'wallflower' of the group has a 17 Charisma, and most of the rest is in the 20's. We are in a multi-group campaign, and ours, by chance or choice, had all the pretties stuck together.

We've pretty much talked, flirted or sung our way through every challenge.

Not one of mine, but from someone I knew many years ago: one of their D&D adventuring groups was called "The Fuzzy Bunny Adventuring Company".

Never did a more murderous, black-hearted, down-right villainous collection of individuals exist; who proceeded to burn, slaughter, and pillage their way across the countryside, making The Fuzzy Bunny Company the most feared name throughout the lands...

once, during one of my earlier campaigns, the entire party was unconscious after a BBEG they encountered a few levels too early beat them up. He had taken quite a bit of damage though, and he was at (what must have been) 1 or 2 hp. then our wizard got the brilliant idea to have his familiar, a tiny cat, go up and attack him. the cat jumped on him, clawed him twice, and the wizard managed to roll a pair of natural 20s to hit.

That's right, the tiny cat familiar managed to finish off the BBEG that took the rest of us out. Thenceforth, the cat was dubbed "Fluffy Ironfist, destroyer of worlds" and our party began adventuring in his name.

eventually, after hearing of the great and mighty deeds in the name of Fluffy Ironfist, commoners started worshipping him and he ascended as a rank 0 diety to his own plane filled with yarn, catnip, and squeaky toys.

EDIT: for relevance, I believe we were called "The Vassals of Fluffy Ironfist, Destroyer of Worlds."

I like it! Have you ever tried a commoner vs cat fight? One time our people got the brilliant idea to open a commoner fighting ring, only rule for fighting, you had to have no combat experience. We put them up against housecats and called it "The feline fightring" needless to say we quickly got run out of town and got called "the gladiators" because anyone that captured us always tried to kill us in a similar fashion (but used MUCH bigger monsters).

We had a party of sky pirates that used a series of fake names for our ship (under the theory that if anyone scried for it and had the wrong name, they'd get the wrong ship... we had a bunch of tiny dummy ships that were actually named the things we pretended to be called).

My favorite of our ship names was "Legitimate Victory" but "She's One of Ours Sir" was another good one.

Ours is unofficially named the "Happy Smiles Brigade", due to a sarcastic suggestion based upon the fact that our default expressions are "weary deadpan", "unimpressed deadpan", and "serene deadpan".

There is actually a random table in the Pathfinder Game Mastery Guide for determining the name of an adventuring group. I assume for NPC dungeoneers.

That being said, my favorite group name has always been "Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra"

Like an entire universe of nerd, there. A nerdcosm.

I had to make a dozen sample characters for a convention-run game, at least one of each class, and named them all from that episode. Darmok, Jilaad, Tenagra, El-Eledril, Sokoth, Mirab, etc.

The only group I remember taking a name was The Royal Order of the Drunken Ferret (which we, a decade later, used as a guild name in Warcraft).

I've been playing D&D since 1983 and I've never once played in or DM-ed a game where the party gave themselves a name. I find that sad.

I was in a game, the campaign went from 3.5 to 4e to Exalted (long story, not the point of this thread).

Anyway, the basis of the story was that we were in a D&D style game world, in the DC Comics Universe. We were good guys, but as we were the beginnings of some of the groups in the DC universe... we ended up referring to ourselves as the Legion Of Doom.
