......so, uh, not to get into the details, but I'm completely and utterly AFB for an extended period of time (this isn't even my computer I'm using right now), and I'm hosting a D&D session tomorrow, and one of the players needs a character made for him. I realize coming to you guys for a full build is a breach of etiquette, but honestly I don't have the time or resources to handle this right now, and hopefully I have enough goodwill around these parts that someone will help me out.

The basics: Level 13, all books allowed, standard rules, standard WBL, 4d6-1 stats.

What's needed: A character for a newbie. Should be fun and easy to play. Should be able to keep up with a fairly optimized group. Can use any books as part of the build, but shouldn't need to refer to anything past PHB in actual play. Should be printable somehow. Everything else is totally up to you guys.

The rest of the group: A deformed Human Tashalatora PsiWar, a Halfling Malconvoker, and a Dwarf Rogue.

Human Favored Soul of Hieroneous 12/Sacred Exoricist 1
Alignment: Lawful Good

Abilities:

Cha (all level ups go here) > Str > Con > Dex > Int > Wis

Feats:

1: Law Devotion
1: Education (+1 to K: Planes and K: Religion)
3B: Weapon Focus (Longsword)
3: Power Attack
6: Cleave
9: Versatile Spellcaster
12B: Weapon Specialization (Longsword)
12: Melee Weapon Mastery

Skills: (distribute based on Int score)

Concentration 16
K: Planes 10
K: Religion 7
Diplomacy X

Advantage to this is that you're basically just a melee warrior who heals/buffs when necessary. The party is lacking divine casters, and it's fairly easy to play. I can draw up a spell/item list if you want to go with this.

to be honest, a barbarian is one of the best characters to start with if you like to swing a sword or an ax. it goes like this

are you in combat? y/n

if y, are you raging? y/n

if n, rage, if y, are you swinging at something? y/n

regardless of answer, swing again

EDIT: just saw it was a level 13 game, which makes being in combat and not a psywar or ToB character a failure. i would suggest playing a cleric, as it isnt too hard to pick your spells from the phb because they are all pretty good, and the newbie can figure out if they like casting or fighting more

Complete newb? Fantastic. That generally means a melee focus.

Newbs tend to like two things- hitting things and dodging things. My advice is a Barbarian 1/Warlock 4/Feat Rogue 4/Fighter 4

Gives him pounce, Eldrich Glaive plus two other least invocations, some DR, detect magic, plenty of skills, and plenty of feats. And with 11BAB he gets the third iterative on his pounces. It's striaghtforward in play, if a bit complicated to make, and thanks to the levels of rogue skill points and the detect magic at will it will be interesting to roleplay as well.

I don't think you can pounce with Edritch Glaive, since it's a full-round action to activate (not simply a full-attack).

Bugger. There goes the Barbarian/Warlock build I was building for a more non-newbish game. I can't think of a way to pounce with touch attacks, then, aside from casting wraithstrike...

My next best suggestion would be to replace the Warlock levels with two more fighter and two more feat rogue. More feats=better ubercharger.

Using a Water Orc for race and 2 flaws you've got

1- Battle Jump
1.flaw- Headlong Rush
1.flaw- Power Attack
2.F.Rogue- Improved Bull Rush
3.F.Rogue- Power Lunge
3- Improved Sunder
5.F.Rogue- Leap Attack
6- Shock Trooper
7.F.Rogue- Combat Brute
8.Fighter- Cleave
9- Travel Devotion
9.Fighter- Dungeoncrasher Variant
11.Fighter- Martial Study (Crusader's Strike)
12- Martial Stance (Thicket of Blades)
13.Fighter- Improved Dungeoncrasher Variant

Keep Jump maximized and charge every round, activating travel devotion as needed for set-up.

It's not exactly a simple build, but at least it's mostly an "I charge, I pounce" type tactic.

Character for a newbie that's easy to play, yah that can/has been done already.
Character for a newbie that'll let them keep up in an optimized group, can be done.
Character for a newbie that'll let them keep up in an optimized group, AND is easy to play, not so much. Wealth ends up being a big factor in your options, and more options means it's less simple.
Perhaps a vow of poverty druid. You'll just need to help the newbie by printing out stats for a few powerful wildshapes.

20 level build
Human Barbarian Boar totem 8/ fighter 2/ Rune scarred Berserker 10 (prestige class)

Needed to get into RS Berserker:
BAB +7
Iron Will (feat)
Survivor (feat)
One berserker lodge feat
Craft (scarring) 5 ranks
Intimidate 5 ranks
Sense Motive 2 ranks
Knowledge local-Rashemon (or be from there)

Why?
Human: for the feat and skill points (ok mostly cause of the feat)
Barbarian: to get into RS Beserker and for the nifty boar additions
Fighter: feats and skill.. haha ok sorry i couldn't finish that... feats always help :p

Dragonfire Adept (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20060912a&page=2) with entangling exhalation. Can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be. Everything needed (except that aforementioned feat) is available for free online and thus "printable" under fair use I think.
