View Full Version : Specialist Wizard + Domain Granted Power + Magic Domain?

In the process of building a specialist wizard, I came across the Domain Granted Power feature in Complete Champion. In looking over my options, I looked at what the Magic domain would give (hey, it's thematic).

Anyway, I'll just post it here:

Magic Domain
Granted Power

Use scrolls, wands, and other devices with spell completion or spell trigger activation as a wizard of one-half your cleric level (at least 1st level). For the purpose of using a scroll or other magic device, if you are also a wizard, actual wizard levels and these effective wizard levels stack.

How would this work with a specialist wizard at 5th level? Treantmonk's guide says it'll let me use wands and scrolls of my banned schools. That much is clear. But how would the levels stack together? Would it just be as a 5th level wizard or would it be as a 7th level wizard?

The relevant text for Domain Granted Power is:

You can now use that domain's granted power as a cleric does, but you do not gain access to its spells or extra spell slots.

I'm leaning towards it being as a 5th level wizard, but I wanted to see others opinions.

Yeah, without actual Cleric levels I'd say you're stuck with just the 5th level wizard casting.

Technically you don't have any cleric levels. So 1/2 of 0 is technically zero but you can never cast as a 0 lvl caster, IIRC, so I would say you only cast schools of your banned school as a caster level of 1.

So since you have 5 lvls of Wizard I would argue that your effective caster level for banned spells is 6th. Arguably not that much better but hey with CL boosting items (such as strand of prayer beads or other items like it) you can make some use out of them.

Alright. CL 5 or 6 (I somehow glossed over the bit about minimum level). I suppose it's up to the DM when it comes around. That's fine, I was going to take it anyway. As I said, it fits in thematically with the character.

Thanks for the input.

Isn't this amazing for a specialist wizard then??

If you're an actual Wizard 5, then your 5 Wizard levels stack with your 0 Cleric levels meaning you use them as a 5th level Wizard. This includes banned schools, as the hypothetical Wizard you use items as obviously does not have any banned schools. (because if he/she did then the Cleric would have similiar limitations when using this power.) That much is clear.

But... I would say that the formula for the caster level for these items is: (Wizard levels+1/2 Cleric levels) or 1 whichever is greater. Not: Wizard levels+
(1/2 Cleric levels) minimum one. But it's open to interpertation.
