View Full Version : Valley of the Fallen

It Begins.

The valley was just as it had always been a place of silent beauty and peace. The largest city of Ranrur'nak was bustling in the markets as always merchants selling there wares and the lovely keep towering over the city like a lone champion. The town was never a lack of splendor priding itself with the best bards from the lands as well the best ale's that could be sent from up-river. You are all within the city going about your daily lives be it looking for work or just passing through on your way home.

(You all start here..I will give you a little time to explore the city but for all points an purposes this is a small city with a population of about 7,000.)

I am not a master Artist but here is the map guys...

Ardiums wakes as the first rays of light filter in through the windows of his luxurious room, then pulls the blannkets over his face and goes back to sleep. He finally rises around noon and spends about an hour grooming himself before heading downstairs to the common room of the inn for breakfast which he enjoys with a glass of pale wine. While munching slowly he asks the innkeeper Any news

Glyph spent the night in a nearby alley. He was meditating to regain his spells from the previous day. He finishes a little past the morning hour. Standing up, he checks his gear and walks out of the alley onto the city streets. He spends most of the day walk around the shopping district, just browsing the wares.
Near noon, he travels to the local temple of Samson and joins the choir in a song of praise to his deity. He walks over to the attending priest and asks for a brief blessing. Raising to his feet, he asks the man:

Excuse me, father. I am looking for some employment in this city. Can you tell me of where I may find such?

The Innkeeper shakes his head and looks to the man: "No news at all lad...sorry to say this place is about as dull as monk who takes a vow of silence." :He winked and then looked to him.:"Looking for work i assume?"

:The temple of Samson is built of stone and ivory inlays it is easy to see by the building just what this place stands for..the marbled floor and heated pools are perfect for any strong athlete to rest...the symbol of Samson in a mosaic upon the floor...the temple looks almost like a open pavillion as warriors train others pray..:"Work my son..just what sort of work are you looking for?"

Into the town square strides a muscled human wearing a desert nomad's breeches and a peasant's vest loosely laced down the front. He walks with a light step and a dancers grace through the thinning crowds of the evening. He spies a gentleman in a courtier's outfit. With a calculated step he makes as if he stumbled and elbows the gentleman in the side just above his coin purse. With deft strokes, he slips a couple fingers in and pulls out a couple of coins.

Leod arises from his not-so-comfortable lodgings in an alleyway. He will spend 15 minutes playing his music to himself, paying little attention to the world around him as he swells with arcane energies.

After that, he will hit to the streets and start asking beggars and homeless people if they know of any circus that may have passed by recently.

Thokal crouches in the shadow of a chimney, high on the rooftops over the market, where he's perched alertly since before dawn. He studies every new face he sees and ponders which of the odd characters he should approach first. Perhaps that large clumsy human who keeps bumping into people? Or the dirty fellow annoying the beggars? So many interesting people!

"It has been a long trip, has it not my friends?" speaking to his two companions, a badger and a hawk. Onlookers may mistake him as slightly crazy. He sits inside a tavern, bringing a cool drink to his lips, pausing, eyes closed, and drinks deep of the ale. It wasn't a very flattering drink, resembling more of the taste of urine rather than ale. Ranzbert didn't care though. It was cold, and that was good enough.

Of course the trip from the hills to the city is not a very long one. However, Ranz did not simply walk across, but rather spent years walking around the valley, learning the terrain, and following a mysterious call, which eventually led him here, Ranrur'nak.

He ponders in his bar stool for a while, as the barkeep comes up and informs Ranz that animals are not allowed inside the establishment. Ranz sighs."Here's to guessin' I should make myself useful," as he raises his glass, and drinks again. He produces an entire silver piece from his pocket and lays it on the table. Afterwards, he promptly leaves the bar, in search of wherever his feet take him...

Upon hearing of the raiders, Leod exclaims to himself, "Aha! Raiders must travel around a lot. Why did I not think to ask them sooner? I shall ask them immediately!"

With money like that, I could extract revenge on the Desert barons. Nine hells! With a couple more jobs with sums like that, I wouldn't need to extract my revenge!

Considering that we're looking for bandits, that might be a good thing. Ambushes go two ways, you know. Let's light a nice big fire to let them know we're here, lie in wait for them and then take one alive. I have some small ability with illusions myself. Perhaps we should find hiding places and Ranz can have his friends range out. When they spot an enemy they can alert us and Thokal and I can cast illusions to make it appear as if we are al asleep. Then we catch the bandits off guard.

Leod yawns and rubs his eyes, blinks a few times, then rubs his eyes once more. The sleepiness in his expression is only outdone by the annoyance that shines clearly in his features. He yawns once more and declares:

"Okay, that plan was imperfect. Admittedly, we did not account for a few things. Merchants rarely travel at night, landmarks are more visible under the light of day, runners are equally more visible when there is sunlight, and raiders need sleep, too. I suppose they are a little farther up, as well. Or, perhaps we were simply unlucky."

Leod shrugs his shoulders and walks up to his wagon, letting his beasts of burden to roam and graze. He then pulls out a dried fruit for himself from the rations supplied by the clerics of Samson. He takes a bite and turns to the party once more.

"Tonight, I am definitely getting some sleep, raiders be darned. They can wait patiently until I've rested away my fatigue."

Where'd that dagger get off to? Someone said it was magical... Some creatures can't be harmed with mundane steel.

Hey, let me get a look there before we go through, Thokal. Search: +16

"I've got the dagger, but since you seem more the combat type than me I suppose any magical weapons ought to go to you first. I simply wasn't aware anyone else used daggers." Leod waits for Victor to finish with the door and then brings the dagger over to him. "Recent evidence shows that I should be trying some different tactics, anyway."

Glyph

The warforged swings his mace around in a low arc, if he was made of flesh others would assume he was stretching his muscles. Walking over to Victor, he nods signalling his readiness.

Is the door trapped or safe? I will save my last few spells for healing if it becomes nessesary. I have a few arcane strikes left, but not many I should warn.

Sorry Pifro is still down. How many of us are still in the game? Should we try to recruit any replacements?

The door looks safe there is no sound coming for it either for any who made listens. When and if you open the door you see a room full of devices..the devices are easily used for dark means (aka torture). The dried blood and the rust a proof that this has not been used in some time. The room has no other doors and is otherwise empty upon first glance.

OOC:
Make me some search checks please.

"Woah," Leod says, as he gets his first glimpse of the room; he immediately turns his head away and holds one hand to his stomach. "That's..rather morbid," he says after taking a few seconds to collect himself. Then, taking a deep breath, he faces the room again.

"Ok, I think I'm alright now. I'll just...let one of you guys lead. So...um...lead on."

OOC
Leod will pass on searching.

Seeing the reaction his allies has to the room, he speaks up.

I have seen battlefields with worse conditions. If you wish to stay out, then I will be willing to search the room.

Glyph enters the room and begins searching the room. The blood and gore doesn't seem to bother him in the slightest as he picks his way through the remains of previous victims. Every now and then a semi-quiet squish can be heard as he moves around the room.

Is it alright if I take 20 for the search? If not, here is the search roll (guessing my mod would be no more than +2).

Thokal peers around his comrades and into the room, blanches and backs away. If you're looking for any secret passageways or doors in there, I can use magic to help, otherwise," he pauses and swallows uncomfortably, "you're on your own."

[roll0] I don't think I get the search bonus for the goggles on this. It didn't say "you get +5 to search checks," it goes on to stipulate "to find secret doors, traps, and similarly concealed items".

Good thing you are trying to find something hidden ..it counts 27 total.

Good enough and good enough for Gylph as well.

You find a small skull ebony and looking as if blood had been dried on its eye sockets..clearly some other deities symbol but not the one you were looking for..inside the skulls left socket you find a set of keys...that might come in handy later.

Seeing the skull, the warforged growls in disgust. Swinging his warmace, he shatters the skull with a well placed blow.

A foul evil thing like this must be destroyed. It is a sin against all that is holy in Samson's light!

After a few minutes, he turns to the group.

One is sorry for the outburst. Such things are not meant for the success of the group. I shall try to restrain myself from further actions.

Leod

After Glyph's outburst, Leod looks at him and says, "Right, then. I'll be waiting by the other door if that's alright with you guys." He turns around and puts his full attention on the door ahead, willing himself to not look back into the room behind him.

As Leod is approaching the door, he stops to take a closer look at the brute the party had just vanquished. He gives the chin a light kick and says, "You were an ugly brute, weren't you? I suppose we did you a favor, taking you out before you could ever get yourself to a mirror." With a sigh, Leod continues on to stand close to the unopened door.

The key fits perfectly and soon you are brushed with hot steams upon your faces as the dull lit room is before you. The area looks rather empty or so you thought before you see six half-orc bandits..looks like you were getting to the bottom of things after all.

The half -orc looked to you all rather shocked you had made it this far and quickly scrambled to grab their weapons. The steams gushed out of the vents and provided a small form of cover for a few moments.

Thokal starts muttering and gesturing at a pair of the orcs. As he finishes speaking, black shadows swirl around them and they stagger.

Shadow spray has a 5ft radius. If there's more than 2 standing together by the time my spell goes, i'll target them, otherwise just a pair, that arent be attacked by anyone else.
It's a DC 18 fort save. Fail means 5 rounds of -4 str, and 1 round of daze. pass does nothing :(
