Shadowleaf, Jeriah, or planswalker only. all others will be roasted and fed to the big boss.

the situation has just gotten quite interesting: there are a pair of ratlings engaged with kobolds in a tussle. there is a third kobold who has just finished stabbing a spear through the throat of an unconscious ratling. In the middle of this fracas is an owlbear skeleton. A little behind them is a kobold that seems to be made of sand at first glance. they cannot tell why, but they feel as if the cavalry has just arrived.

A blue-scaled dragonwrought Kobold suddenly appears from the shadows, standing right behind the ratling the closest to the other end of the tunnel. He has a shining leather armor on, a rapier in one hand and a small buckler attached to the other. He is wearing a pair of spectacles. He looks old but with an expression of grim determination in his eyes.
He masterfully stabs at the ratling. As the sword flashes forward, flames dance across its blade.

The light brown kobold female stands at average height for her race, though her skin looks unusually tough and leathery as if most of the moisture has been driven from her body. She is lean and tough, but she looks as if a strong wind would simply blow her away. The gleam in her eyes of defiance against all odds is strong, even for a kobold.

Where did he come from?! Ruining my plans...

The owlbear skeleton continues to tear into the ratlings. The female kobold merely stands and watches.

the owlbear tears a long gash in the remaining ratling. It withdraws bact the way it came, and the kobolds throw their spears at it in pursuit. the one who had stabbed a ratling's throat manages to hit the ratling in the back. It takes 8 damage but keeps on going. the kobolds then pursue it, although they are only able to close half the gap.

Shadowleaf's turn.

Shadowleaf
2010-07-21, 02:16 PM
Distance to the ratling?

Jeriah
2010-07-21, 03:02 PM
60ft. They have a speed of 30 and withdrew.

Kobold speed = 30.
Kobolds attack and move, closing half the distance. 30*2 = 60

Shadowleaf
2010-07-21, 04:11 PM
They might have tried a double move. They might have the Quick trait, have one level of Barbarian, it might not be exactly half the distance, etc.
Just want to make sure.

Jeriah
2010-07-21, 04:52 PM
They did a withdraw full round action to move double speed without provoking AoOs. At least, that was my understanding when planswalker said he "withdraws"

planswalker
2010-07-21, 07:24 PM
from your position, it is actually 55 feet. you were a little further back than the ratling.

Shadowleaf
2010-07-21, 07:43 PM
Shalantan charges the ratling, quickly catching up with him. As he moves, he does subtle twists with his blade, and a small dust funnel appears on the opposite side of the ratling. The dust ignites into a small ball of ball which sits in the air.
Shalantan, satisfied with the result, takes a deadly stab at the ratling.

Clean kill. So, who are you?

Shadowleaf
2010-07-21, 08:25 PM
The blue dragonwrought Kobold quickly cleans his rapier and places it carefully in its sheath. He walks back in the tunnel and picks up his bow, which disappears into a small bag.
He only then looks up, and gives a wry smile. "I am Shalantan Drystaz'tharmenatharon of the tribe under the great Merthrizra'tharmentharon. And you would be?"

Editing post colour to avoid confusion.

Kyrutha, cleric and prophet of the gods Kurtulmak the Horned Sorcerer, Gaknulak the Trickster, and Dakarnok the Raider.

Would you and the others please step aside for a moment? I need to complete this quickly.

Shadowleaf
2010-07-21, 08:49 PM
Shalantan bows elegantly. "What do you need to do?"

Jeriah
2010-07-21, 08:56 PM
I intend to make use of their corpses to serve this tribe.

She casts desecrate on the area followed by animate dead attempting to raise all 3 ratlings as skeletons. Once completed, she'll use cure minor wounds to heal up that last point of damage she has.

Shadowleaf

Kurmlat, Shalatan, wait a moment and let the skeletons and other 'bolds engage first and hold them back. I've got an idea...

planswalker
2010-07-21, 10:57 PM
mind if i handle this in the morning? it's getting late for me and I want to be able to think clearly when I do this.

Jeriah
2010-07-21, 11:11 PM
That's fine.

My plan is to have the skeletons block the tunnel as well as possible and cast black sand where it covers them and the ratlings, causing the rats to take 1d4 damage every round while the skeletons are healed for that much. The area is also shrouded in darkness.

The skeletons then force their way through to block the rats' escape and drive them towards the waiting kobolds, giving them the option to stay in the darkness and slowly die and/or be driven into the 'bolds.

We also really need to get some traps setup in these tunnels for defense, or we're just not doing our jobs as kobolds.

planswalker
2010-07-22, 01:31 AM
sounds great, but feel free to not bother telling me your plan until you spring it on me. As long as it's a legal ploy, i actually like it when my pc's can surprise me.

yeah, well, as for the traps, I guess the kobolds only just dug this tunnel in the hopes that a fresh one wouldn't attract attention. they haven't had time to trap it out yet. that's scheduled to begin tomorrow.

I need the stats for the ratlings so I can make skeleton versions of them, because I raised the three of them.

Initiative order
kobolds: (1d20+2)[22]
owlbear skeleton: (1d20)[14] his mod? +6 = 20 (it's in the MM)
kobold ratling skeletons: (1d20)[16] their mod(s)? (4+Dex...)
shalantan:19
ratling group 2: (1d20+3)[13]
large ratlibng: (1d20+2)[12]
kumlat: (1d20+3)[8]
ratling group 1: (1d20+3)[8]
ratlibng group 3: (1d20+3)[7]

skeletons go before shalantan. will adjudicate the hit after the skeletons go.

ratling pertinent stats: no rhd, +4 str, +2 dex, no base nat arm, a natural bite attack for 1d4, small size.

Jeriah
2010-08-02, 04:47 PM
According to Riz, the Ratling skeletons have 22hp, 15/14/12 ac/t/ff, 2 1d3 claw attacks at +3, a 1d4 secondary bite attack at -2, and +7 init modifier.

The owlbear charges the ratlings, attacks, then vanishes as the spell duration ends.

Knowing the summon spell duration was about to end, the owlbear would have been in the front.

skel 3 tears into ratling 9. the other two's strikes land astray of their marks.

Shalantan pierces ratling 8 in the throat. he dies instantly.

ratling 5 steps forward and lashes out at the skeleton. his claws seem ineffective. he does manage to clamp down with his jaws and deal [roll0] damage to it.

the big ratling throws a rock at the skeleton and deals [roll1] damage.

On Kyrutha's turn, she casts black sand, centered on the square behind the large ratling. 20ft in every direction is now shrouded in magical darkness, and every creature within the darkness takes 1d4 damage from negative each round.

A terrible explosion suddenly rocks the entire city, and the ground shakes as if an earthquake were tearing the city apart. The sky lights up from a blast many times the brightness of the sun, and you are certain that certain death has at last come to claim you. As the brightness fades, you look toward the Mages' Quarter and see the last remnants of the horror burning directly towards the sky in a seemingly endless stream of raw, burning mana which threatens to tear reality asunder. What seems like an eternity passes as you stare, though it is likely only a few seconds, and at last the blast fades away. In the distance, you hear a building collapse, and you are certain that something horrible has been unleashed upon the city.

with the explosion rocking the place and causing the tunnel to shake, the smaller ratlings flee in terror. The large one though seems to have gotten into a bloodlust. He gives a primal scream and charges at the line of skeletons. He smashes into the middle one, turning it into powder in a single lucky blow with his two-handed hammer. His swing continues through to the left skeleton. It is rattled nearly to peices, but manages to hold on. The ratling seems to be in a rage. It is foaming at the mouth and its attacks are swung wildly, with the strength that can only be had from one in the throes of a primal rage.

Kumlat strikes at him with a crossbow bolt. He ignores it as it bounces off of his tanned hides he has wrapped around the matted fur on his torso.

the mooks also fire. One gets a lucky shot in and deals [roll0] damage.

as the haboob and blacksand take their hold on him, he finally falls unconscious. Without the massive amounts of adrenaline pumping through his system, he succumbs to his wounds, instantly dead.

Shalantan earns 1500 xp, kyrutha 1800

Well, I'm low on magic. I need to get some rest before I can do much of anything else.

"Let's go to the Big Boss, he should have some priests who can patch us up."

Shalantan quickly bags the large ratling's weapons and clothes - everything from jewelry to dirty loincloth. He also searches around the place for more loot on the other bodies (exluding the Kobolds, if the rest of the Kobolds begin dragging them back or something).

Dang, I check the body, and you grab everything...

Well, since I was in melee range, I'm wagering I'd be faster to drop down and swipe his stuff. We'll work something out. :smallwink:

The kobolds take their fallen comrades back, and another wave of kobold defenders approach from the warrens. Among them is a trapsmith who begins setting out at once to make the tunnels deadly for the ratlings.

you find only his weapon, armor, a rather filthy set of clothes, and a leather pouch. the pouch has several large knots tied in it and will be difficult to untie.

Kyruthia closes the gap just as Shalantan has grabbed the maul. It takes both of them working together to get the rest of the loot off of the massive body.

Shalantan puts the maul into his bag.
Just for good measure, Shalantan activates the gem on his forehead and looks for more magical items.

Detect Magic on the place.

the only magic he is detecting is coming from him and his companion.

Not wanting to be rude, Shalantan stops focusing on the detection spell. He starts helping out the other Kobolds, instead. Once done, he waits for Kyrutha to join him, and heads back to the Kobold lair.

Upon returning to the central lair, the Big Boss says, "Congratulations, Sandy on taking care of the ratlings. Oh, and Shal, a merchant and a drow were asking for you just now. seems your mage-killing caught their attention. they have a proposition for you."

I wasn't finished with the big ratling! I was waiting to see what he had on him before I did anything. I want to go back and finish what I was wanting to do BEFORE we leave. :smallmad:

Shalantan waits while Kyrutha casts desecrate followed by animate dead on the large ratling.

grumble... My whole shtick is raising the dead to fight for me. You have to let me do that or just kill me now and be done with it. I can't fight alone. If you're going to make me fight alone, then just tell me now so I can go roll up a new character.

sorry about that. you do get to do that. It's just that Shalantan was posting and you weren't. I will do the time warp and pretend this took place before you came back. You will get to animate the dead, just bear with me. It's not something I normally consider as important loot

Can I get the stats for him?

Also, if his equipment wasn't magical, I'd like for him to keep the armor and weapon rather than pulling them off of him. Since he had them on him, he should be proficient with them, right?

"Punchinello came asking for me? Interesting.. Well, thank ya, Monster Muncher. Do you need lil' me's help further right now?"

Shalantan addresses Kyrutha. "If you do not mind, I would like to take the.. Rat.. Things'.. items to a mage friend of mine. You are welcome to come, of course."

Well, if they are magical, then we should sell them, of course. I would, however, like to keep them for him if they are not of significant value.

you don't know for sure. by the time shalantan detected magic, it was already on his person and/or yours.

"Punchinello came asking for me? Interesting.. Well, thank ya, Monster Muncher. Do you need lil' me's help further right now?"

"Actually, I was going to ask you to go to him as the kobold representative. You two are my most powerful lieutenants."

punchinello will be the cheapest identifier in town.

Punchinello isn't cheaper than Bob. :smallwink:
