View Full Version : Suggestion for a good PbP game?

And I'm talking game here, not RPG system. I'm looking for information on games that come to a definite end, with a winner and a loser.

I've tried playing chess over PbP before, on this forum even, and it was pretty fun (even if I royally suck at it). Now I'm looking for other games that may fit to be played by PbP.

Does anyone have any idea on games that might be appropriate?

If you have someone dedicated to play the "dealer" who PMs hands and "draws" cards, then card games can work. It's a lot of work though.

I'm trying to work out how to run 1000 blank white cards over a forum.

Yes, I'm kind of hoping that no mediator will have to be involved. Good idea, though.

Note that it doesn't have to be classic games, though. I'm not likely to buy Magic: The Gathering, for example, but it's still interesting to know if it plays well over PbP.

Dominions 3. Epic-scale fantasy TBS game. There's high learning curve, few dozen more or less unique nations, hundreds of spells divided into 7 researchable schools with 9 levels each, etc. The learning curve is related to the amount of stuff, but there are good guides available and everything has a short description, often one that's interesting to read, too.

It doesn't use the I-GO-U-GO model. Every player plans their moves and sends the orders. Once the orders are in, a new turn is generated and everything happens during that one turn.

A game may start with 8 players all sending in the early-game turns almost daily, but that quickly slows to 2-3 turns/week. A game may go on for 70 (or many more, or much less) turns, which is a lot of weeks, but if you pay thought to the map size and amount of players it can be over much longer. Most games end when it's clear that one player is dominant and everyone else agrees they can't stop him, some use built-in victory point system.

Unlike chess, diplomacy will be a big part. This will be true for most PbP games with more than two players. If you don't want that, speak up, that will help define the kinds of games you might like.

Mafia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafia_(party_game)). I've played a game on another forum, and it worked out well.

Here (http://mafiascum.net/forum/index.php) would be a very good place to look around and ask.

As for myself, I like Rumble (http://kevan.org/rumble.cgi), which can be worked without a mediator given that the players are trustworthy, and Nomic.
