Da' Rules

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

Sorry bacon, a lesson to learn, starting a random banter treat is a rare opportunity and often quite wanted, it has in the past started fights over who can make the next one.

Don't worry. We'll be needing a new one soon enough.

Good title. It's unusually coherent for a random banter. (Though the apostrophe in tunas bugs me a bit, sorry YPU).

Chuck Norris can dribble a bowling ball.

Chuck Norris does not use spell check. If he happens to misspell a word, Oxford will simply change the actual spelling of it.

Chuck Norris lost his virginity before his dad did.

All this I know from anecdotal evidence given of OxG&S members who were advertising it on Valentine's Day in the usual fashion.

I really don't know. Have you mentioned these problems to your dentist?

I have not seen my dentist since Y9. In fact, it's more accurate to say I have no dentist. Especially as the only NHS clinic for thirty or forty miles only offers free and speedy service to children.
My parents went private two years ago, and I suspect I may have to do the same. They're more cordial than the NHS anyway.

In addition, despite the fact that I clearly needed braces (which would have entirely prevented my current predicament) when I enquired about getting them I was told that I didn't need them.
So if I had tried to get them I'd have had to go private when we barely had enouh money to buy groceries every week and pay for a grand total of two weekly club prescription comprising an entire £2.50, let alone a set of braces.
Especially when the 'expert' said there'd be no problems if I didn't get braces.

I wouldn't describe it as bloody. It is less frivolous than the others, being Gilbert's biggest concession to Sullivan's desire to write grand opera rather than comic opera, but no-one dies or anything, for all that the main character is sentenced to death before the show begins.

I mean, logically, we must assume that people die the day after the events of the show, but bad things don't count if they happen after the finale. Solve the immediate problem and ignore the rest, that's the G&S way!

Edit: And in my ideas for summer shows, no-one will die at all! Though one of them will probably have an attempted suicide, and another will have a main character dead at the start of the show.

Sounds to me like you probably should! That sucks about dentist trouble.

Indeed. I think I'll get at least one pulled before I go back. At least it'll add to my yokel-tastic image by giving me tiny little enormous gaps in between my teeth.

In other news, I hate mosquitoes. I'm building a newfound appreciation for my cool rainy country, where mosquitoes were driven away by St Patrick or Cúchulainn or something... :smalltongue:

How bad is it that I giggled with mythologically induced glee when I read this. Those two names aren't even all that obscure, in fact, I'd call them very well known. I mean, by Nuggan's sake, the latter is the Hound of Ulster!

In moderately tangetial news there are two things I'd like to learn when it comes to university or general life. One of them would be Irish Gaelic, and the other would be Old and High Irish (something which I have an option to learn at university).
Oh, and to fill out m trifecta: a better knowledge of Irish mythology.

Ending's not as happy, music's more operatic (Which can be rather fun). No really insane plot twists that I can think of. Oh and the dialogue's a bit Shakespearian.

Want! Noaw! I want to see this, operatic G&S, Shakespearian sounding dialogue! WANT!

Surely you can iust pay for it with all your pirate treasure? :smalltongue:

But I'm thinking of changing my avatar, so I won't be having any piratical booty now will I?

"Nothing could possibly be more satisfactory!"

As for anything else, well So it really doesn't matter,
matter, matter, matter, matter,
matter, matter, matter, matter,

Honestly, at this rate we might as well have a volley of G&S between us. Except you'd win hands down.
Reminds me of our food pun battle. Hey, wait a moment, we never decided who won that battle. Should we raise it from the dead and begin again?

"Run, Simba! Run away, and never return..."

Actually, I've just figured out what it is about that question that annoys me, and makes it seem inane. It's the blind guess. If it was, "For those of us who don't know, what's G&S?" I wouldn't mind. (Though it still wouldn't really allow him to join the conversation since he obviously doesn't know anything about them.)
But by making a guess, 'Gold and Silver', which makes no sense in context, the question becomes annoying to me.
OK, I'm done analysing my own reactions now.

And there's always Google. The third result when you type G&S into Google is the Gilbert and Sullivan Festival (http://www.gs-festival.co.uk/).
EVen though he wouldn't have been able to ion in he could have been told a little about G&S and manage to get into a sub-conversation of the sub-conversation about G&S.

You could also make that guess based on the fact I made him an avatar, when I usually only make avatars for myself.

I was half asleep! I didn't pay attention to his sig! And yet I could pick a nickname that reminded me of Tas the kender from the Dragonlance books.
Yet more proof that my brain is wired oddly when compared to the average person.

Having just read the last few pages of the previous Random Banter thread, I would belatedly like to announce my preference for soprano over alto (full disclosure: I am a high soprano myself!) and my great appreciation for the music, voice and wardrobe of Stevie Nicks.

Ack! First Soprano! *flees*
Na, I like sopranos too, it's iust that in G&S the sopranos get all the best songs (when compared to the altos (I'll never get over the one solo line for every alto in the chorus in the Mikado)) and again in my choir which does classical music the altos are iust the supporting layer for the sopranos who kind of . . . soar (or sing incomprehensibly high) above us.

Well, good luck getting the problem taken care of Curly. :smallfrown:

Head pain always makes it almost impossible for me to think even when it's more minor, so I dunno if I'm a freak in regards to it, but, you do have my sympathy there.

Yep. Luckily it comes and goes, and it's only really painful when I'm up late at night - so basically every night.

Hail Stevie Nicks. I say we elect her new to Godhood. Thats how you become a god right?

Actually I was elected to Goddesshood. It simultaneously didn't take very long, and yet took until about last August to officially be recognised.
So in response to your question: yes, you can be elected to Godhood.

Since I think my comment in the last thread got passed over,

Personally, I like both. Altos have a lovely warm quality to their voices, but when Josephine hits her top C, I get shivers.

And yeah, alto parts can be a bit bad. Especially in G&S and christmas carols, or anything relatively boring and classical. Or, if the music is more complicated, they end up as the repository for all the leftover notes in the weird chords, like baritones in barbershop. So, parts still odd, and also difficult to sing.

I don't see any great need to write out the kana when discussing the names the Japanese have given to things. It's the best approximation at English words their alphabet could muster, and if you want to get that technical, then you should be using katakana instead of romaji.

I am reminded of a social studies textbook I read way, way way back a hundred million years ago when I was in a primary school of some sort, which contained a little blurb about Japan loving baseball. "Which they call beso baru" it said, knowingly and proudly.

Well... yes. Technically. But they're trying to say "baseball." Cut them some slack, book.

I believe in Japan he was called Dokutā Egguman anyway. Just as Sonic was called Sonikku. They all had English names. Or rather, names in English. Emī (Amy), Teirusu (Tails), Nakkuruzu (Knuckles), et cetera.

You see, Egguman doesn't sound stupid in Japanese. It does in English, what with it being a compound of two English words.

Well, he's Eggman officially in English now, so it doesnt matter

I don't see any great need to write out the kana when discussing the names the Japanese have given to things. It's the best approximation at English words their alphabet could muster, and if you want to get that technical, then you should be using katakana instead of romaji.

Because it's more specific and means no one could misunderstand. It clearly shows what they were called in Japan. If I said "He is called Doctor Eggman in Japan" it would be unclear whether he was called that in the Japanese language or in English.

And the romanisation is the exact same so katakana would be entirely superfluous.

So, no, if they were trying to say "baseball" they would've gotten it by now. Americans are the worst people on earth with foreign languages and actually proud of it and we occasionally pronounce loanwords correctly, after all.

Well pfft to you too, Mr. Snooty.

Some people from Japan do manage to pronounce the word "baseball" as correctly as can be. When they're speaking English.

That doesn't change the fact that it is quite literally impossible to say "baseball" using the Japanese alphabet. The letters do not exist.

Debatable, but in any case as silly as it was for my book to point that out so long ago, it was correct. Besoboru, and in katakana, not hiragana. If they were going to use hiragana, they may as well have called it yakyū.

Me either. I'm guessing it has something to do with my not having perfect pronunciation of a tongue not my own.

Since they willfully and continually butcher the pronunciation rather than evolve their language enough that they can deal with loan words, I'd say that yeah, is a technicality.

Also, wisdom doesn't enter into textbook manufacture. Just Texas. At least in the U.S.

Uh, that's what cultural exchange and loanwords do anyway. And way to go putting quotation marks around evolve like evolution is some kind of blasphemy. Language grows and changes over time (le gasp!) That they love it so much and aren't handicapped from making the sounds would suggest more that it was a purposeful decision to prevent foreign sounds from leaking into Japanese. I'll need to double check this, but if I'm recalling correctly, the Japanese language has similar entitites overseeing its development (or actively preventing it in some cases) as Continental Spanish and French.

No culture is above examination or criticism. And believe you me, it's pointless to really delve into insulting their culture without going somewhere other than GITP due to the verboten nature of, well, the juicy things.

Im not saying languages dont evolve, but you cant expect them to suddenly add a new sound into their alphabet that's ridiculous, and implying that they should change to be more western is hugely insulting. ... I am of the opinion that loanwords should remain loanwords, and that new words should be adapted to the language it's being used in. For example, the way English pronounce words like über or anime, is not the same way they are pronounced in their native language. Loanwords will continue to change pronunciation to fit the language they're immigrating into.

It's funny that we're talking about this in English, seeing how many loanwords that has. :smallamused:

Not an English grammatical rule, never will be.

"For what?" sounds far more formal and awkward than "what for?", for example. "I didn't know who to give it to." is much better than "I didn't know to whom I should give it." There are too many constructions in English that rely on prepositions at the end for this to be a rule.

But luckily I can now concentrate and distill my puns into a collection of stock phrases, iabs and witty repartee.
That is, should you ever choose to pick up our game again.

Since I think my comment in the last thread got passed over,

And yeah, alto parts can be a bit bad. Especially in G&S and christmas carols, or anything relatively boring and classical. Or, if the music is more complicated, they end up as the repository for all the leftover notes in the weird chords, like baritones in barbershop. So, parts still odd, and also difficult to sing.

Don't worry, I reconstructed your quote for you. :smalltongue:
I do like sopranos, it's iust that they can get so screechy. Especially in a choir.
Iealousy is also a part of it. Honestly, the altos are 'never' heard, and yet can have tricksome parts; iust like you say.
Oh, for the record, classical can sometimes be boring, but I've never done any. Except a very short song by Elgar. It was two pages long!

Well, I don't think the RB pantheon ever had a God of Cuteness, though I might be misremembering. Getting to be an RB deity is fairly easy. Curly's impressive because she gets proclaimed as a Goddess elsewhere, and also because people basically decided she was a Goddess without her proclaiming herself as one.

We have Atreyu. Somewhere around here.

I wouldnt call not having the sound for se with a silent e is willing. It's not being use to it. It's not their job to "evolve" their language either. You'r really just insulting their culture as I see it.

. . . .
*Koorly linguist asplodes*

Uh, that's what cultural exchange and loanwords do anyway. And way to go putting quotation marks around evolve like evolution is some kind of blasphemy. Language grows and changes over time (le gasp!) That they love it so much and aren't handicapped from making the sounds would suggest more that it was a purposeful decision to prevent foreign sounds from leaking into Japanese. I'll need to double check this, but if I'm recalling correctly, the Japanese language has similar entitites overseeing its development (or actively preventing it in some cases) as Continental Spanish and French.

Exactly!
All languages evolve!
Iust over generations. And often between social groups.
It - I - But -
If a language doesn't chane it stagnates! L'academie Francaise (pardon my lack of accents, but my dinner is rapidly getting cooler and cooler) assesses every single loan word or borrowing and creates a French equivalent because they want to keep their language pure and free of contamination.
And because of this the French language know only has an approximation of 60 000 'official' words because they refuse to include any foreign word.
So now the French have a formal set of vocabulary for anything official i.e. governmental or business letters, and an informal set for everything else in the entire universe.
I don't like L'academie Francaise (or any similar thing) as it artificially attempts to control and limit a language and its organic and natural progression of evolution.
They are strangling their own language.
It's a good thing then that most people ignore the rulings of L'academie except when it comes to formal exams and the like.
But I still don't like them.

I am of the opinion that loanwords should remain loanwords, and that new words should be adapted to the language it's being used in. For example, the way English pronounce words like über or anime, is not the same way they are pronounced in their native language. Loanwords will continue to change pronunciation to fit the language they're immigrating into.

It's what happens all the time. Iust not so often you'll note it.
In French you can say, "J'ai recu un email." which is perfectly correct. But in official documents (and all correspondence in a business) you have to say "J'ai recu un courriel." even though the two words mean the exact same thing.
Furthermore, at least with English (for reasons listed below) we have so many words for everything. 'Cooking' and 'cuisine' mean the same thing, iust in different registers.
I could go on and on about this, and explain why, but I won't unless asked as I can go on enormous filibusters about this sort of thing.
Loanwords . . . are always loanwords. Even words which have been in the ENglish language for hundreds of years are still called loanwords. Or borrowings. Or something else.

It's funny that we're talking about this in English, seeing how many loanwords that has. :smallamused:

Eh, there's a quote I read somewhere a very long time ago that I loved and often paraphrase.
The English language is the type of language who will chase other languages down dark alleyways, mug them and steal anything of interest they find and keep it to themselves.
Generally speaking, most sentences ever written in English will contain at least one loanword, sometimes they'll be obvious, or their pronunciation will have changed to English phonology.
Nothing wrong with it.

I am disconcerted. Castaras is now facebook friends with a friend of some of my friends. My internet and RL friends link. It's weird.

Imagine my surprise when College's Husband's Little Brother turned out to be a member of GitP.
And he'd heard of me, both as my real life name and as Curly. Before we'd even met.

Wow. Anything to do with English gets me on a filibuster. Stop feeding the English nerd!

I've not heard this line of reasoning. Go on.

That's it.
I just always thought it was a "how much" word. You can't say "I have fifteen data" in the same way you can't say "I have fifteen rice".

Nope, most pages were discussion of my bad spelled and grammar in the original title.

Also, I actually managed a word at scrabble nobody else knew, go figure.

I just did that! I didn't know it either. I fully expected to be told it wasn't a valid word.

So why haven't you asked her out anyway?

Or was I just dead when that happened and blew up horribly and now we never speak of it again?

Seems misplaced?

<_< Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

...Personally, I blame the computer. It keeps having these weird seizures where it keeps scrolling up and down like it was trying to imitate vibration while the speakers emit an otherworldly noise whenever I get a text message or phone call.

Every. Single. Time.

Well, except when I turn the speakers off. Then it's about 50-50 whether the screen will have a seizure or not. Input from the mouse is still a bit screwy then though.:smallconfused:
