View Full Version : Swapping Fighter for Generic Warrior?

Hey Playgrounders, Lately I've been thinking of dropping the Fighter class in the group I DM in favor of the Generic Warrior (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/genericClasses.htm) class from Unearthed Arcana.

My group is still pretty inexperienced so this seemed like a fairly elegant way to make the more melee oriented characters in my party feel better as the spellcasters are finally starting to get nice things (though as this is a group of new players they're not at the point of dwarfing the meleers completely, just outshining them at more crucial moments.)

Have any of you done similar or perhaps just played around with the Generic Warrior in your groups? Looking it over it seems like it would be fantastic for players who want a melee oriented character who can do a little bit of everything and still have the feats left over for a Power Attack focus or something else.

...Wow. You know, I'd never actually thought of this, but now that I'm thinking about it, it makes all kinds of sense. You can make what amounts to a fighter, only tailor it to suit the skills you'd like to use. In fact, I'd let this work with the Thug variant (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#fighterVariantThug) as well.

One thing I'd point out to players is that the special abilities can only be gotten through bonus feats, not their regular feats.

All in all, a great idea. Thanks for pointing it out!

That's a pretty solid fix. I'd make sure that they can pick feats outside of core, though. There really is only so much to choose from in core.

+1. Tactical feats are especially nice. Since they are new I doubt Magic of Incarnum, Tome of Magic or Tome of Battle will be used, but some vestige abilities, soulmelds or maneuvers could up them some and with soulmelds and maneuvers through feats they don't really need to learn the whole system either.

Might be bad if the player wants to take those Sneak Attack abilities in place of bonus feats the generic Warrior can take though... +3d6 SA at level 1? Woah.

fact: in ToS a bunch of my fighter builds were originally generic warriors before DocRoc put the kaboosh on them.

I hardily support this idea.
