If you're hit by a portcullis trap, which side do you end up on after it falls?

I'd assume you'd end up on the side that you were on before you triggered the trap.

Either the side you were on or roll randomly.

let the players dicide if they dive forwards or backwards and then go from there

Reflex save? Or roll a random direction? Or, better yet, they get impaled on the barbed bottom of the portcullis, he he he...

Reflex save? Or roll a random direction? Or, better yet, they get impaled on the barbed bottom of the portcullis, he he he...This. If they pass the reflex save by a significant margin, let them choose which side they go on. If they barely pass it, roll so it's random which side they instinctively jumped to. If they fail it, it's now on top of them and they need to figure out a way to get out from under it. Maybe if they only just barely fail it, it hits them but they don't end up trapped under it...

That would work...if the trap actually had a reflex save, it's an attack trap

It was a moot point in my 1st level game, because all the characters hit by it ended up dead. Brutal CR1 trap. But a portcullis wouldn't do much good if it didn't stop people from progressing.

Reflex save to avoid it. Random side. Unless they made it by -say- 5 points (as a gm call), in which case they could choose.

Ideally, have them all tell you at once, or do it by notes. Its not like they'd have time to discuss which way they want to dive.

Maybe modify the trap a bit- character is automatically Grappled by the trap, and must beat a difficult grapple check (or Str check, or maybe Escape artist?) to get loose, which may also do them damage due to the trap impaling their leg or foot?

Thats if they fail the Reflex save.
