View Full Version : Fun with Chekhov's Gun

Premise is simple: Find things in the comic from way long ago that everyone's forgot about and convince yourself it will be important later.

Personally, I strongly believe that the poison Belkar scrapes off the trap in this strip (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0038.html) is eventually going to come up. Because I'm not allowed near sharp objects anymore.

Who knows, some of these might be right, the Boots of Speed in strip 3 came back, as did the Girdle of Femininity/Masculinity (one of which I would love to have, btw :smallwink:).

So I'm saying the Unholy Blight goblin's amulet will come back, since Belkar called dibs on it.

First of all, he ate it all. Second, it served its purpose: attracting the giant sand worm.

I'll make a Chekov's gun prediction from what we see in the current strip, that we will eventually meet up with Nyr-Atul, priest of Tiamat.

Right, because Giant Sandworm Attractants are standard gifts to give people who've just saved your life. Of course I remember it attracted that sandworm, but that Had to be a side-effect, I'm sure it had some other effects we don't know about yet. With his eyes all a-glow? C'mon!

And even so, a blast of relapse gas in the arena could significantly alter a gladiatorial evening, right? Don't be so quick to dis the spice...:smallwink:

That seems to me more of a routine solo adventure reward designed to make sure that a PC has enough "stuff" to be in the normal range for his level and class (the old wealth-by-level guidelines Haley talks about early on in the strip).

Roy's reforged sword, Haley's purloined dagger, the spells V picked up in Azure City, Elan's rapier, and possibly also Mr. Scruffy (as Belkar's animal companion) all fall into this category. They won't be forgotten like a Chekov's gun is.

Even so, it still didn't make any damned sense.
It did, but it's pretty obscure all the same. Rich's explanation, from DCF:

This may be the most random joke ever, and a lot of people didn't even get it. It's a spoof of a series of silly ads for cupcakes and such that used to run in comic books in the 70's and 80's. Each ad featured a one-page comic book scene in which a superhero would notice a crime and, rather than solve it with his keen intellect or amazing super-powers, he would give the crooks an assortment of prepackaged pastries. The criminal would then surrender, overtaken with their deliciousness. Well, the idea for the strip came to me in a dream. I woke up groggy one morning with the phrase "goblin fruit pie" on my lips. I have no idea what I was dreaming about, but the phrase made me giggle. Within moments, Fruit Pie the Sorceror was born. Anyway, I know this isn't as funny to some as it is to me, but it makes me crack up every time I read it, and it was my idea.

TheMac04

Hmmm....still pretty bizarre, especially in a series where pop culture is referenced, but rarely actually shown. It was pretty funny though, so I guess it doesn't matter.

I've always liked Belkar's comment to Miko that he expected to be killed be a Paladin. Stabbed to death by a garnish stalk after being blocked by a cracker is possible too.

The Oracle's village could have another purpose.

Tsukiko's Xykon doll could be a powerful magic item or other major plot point.

The hydra being used for Hydra Burgers could have some further relevance.

Potato salad in a giant wooden alpaca.

Hobgoblin Warrior From Strip #433, Panel 3.

Roy's Bag of Tricks, while used a bit much already, will be a major plot point in the future as well.

Roy will kill Xykon with a greatclub or a polearm.

The gnome tech in 138 will all be used at some point.

Xykon is lying about the crown and it will be crucial to the plot--or perhaps even Xykon is not aware of its power!

The umbrella used by the MitD will be extremely important all by itself, somehow.

That kid didn't die in 112. He heads one of the nine sides mentioned by Rich.

Master Fyron is still around.

The humble doily.

Xykon's crown, I already suspected it of being a powerful magic item unknown to everyone. It radiates evil after all, and I've never heard of an item worn by an evil guy becoming evil itself.
Plus, I'm sure someone must have used detect magic on it, and found nothing. But if it radiates evil it must have some kind of aura, so it may have some kind of protection against detection.

I therefore theorize that the crown is the key to unlock the doily and reach
ultimate cosmic power!

As far as I'm aware, OotS membership is purely on a "because I said so" basis. Roy tore up their contracts (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0294.html) ages ago, and they don't have ID cards (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0570.html) or anything that officially makes them members.
