So I'm a big fan of the druid shapeshift variant and assuming someone hasn't already made a class which does this, what would I need/want to give a shapeshift druid in exchange for giving up their spellcasting completely?
Basically I'm looking for a class that doesn't have too choose whether to shift or cast spells, and is never in doubt about which would be best, they just shift and rip faces off...

You could take Ranger, add the Wildshape variant, trade the wildshape for druid shapeshift (there are not rules for this, but whatever), and trade ranger casting for feats or whatever via Complete Warrior or Complete Champion rules. You end up with full bab and feats and random ranger stuff. It's a hit in power to go ranger instead of druid, and another hit to drop spells, but it is simpler.

I've done a character with the variant described above: it's actually still quite effective, if not as much as a Tier 1, of course. You just need the right combat style (I had one which gave Power Attack, found it somewhere on Crystal Keep).

Somewhere on this forum, someone made list of about two dozen shapeshift feats which give you alternate forms. They are also worth looking into.

Just a couple of things I've used in making a level 30 shapeshifter.

The shifter (http://www.tgdmb.com/viewtopic.php?p=131601) (see the last post) doesn't turn into specific creatures, but involves plenty of beastliness and ferality.
