I need some creepy music for an upcoming Call of Cthulhu game I have. little to no vocals would be preferable, as would long run times, so that I dont have to constantly change the song.

Thanks in advance!

I would recommend looking into Black Aria by Danzig (http://www.amazon.com/Black-Aria-Glenn-Danzig/dp/B00004NKGH). It's an album of completely instrumental dark classical-ish music. I haven't listened to it in awhile, but I recall there are a few dark gothic tracks which might be good for the mood.

I highly recommend Henryk Gorecki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henryk_G%C3%B3recki). Classical symphonic music - your players will probably never have heard it. Very creepy, especially his Symphony of Sorrowful Songs. Good background, not overly distracting, long playing, and definitely mood-enhancing.

I would say track down some "God Speed! Your Black Emperor." Not 100 % creepy all the time but sets a dark mood with long run times and tracks that blend well together. If you punch them into Pandora you'll get a good flavor.

Lost in Las Vegas by Two Steps from Hell (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2waDCBW3l6w&playnext=1&videos=W1NIOEAmTRA) is pretty atmospheric, as is Black Spider (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Yd8vBKRntE&playnext=1&videos=tQ8HiO9X9NE) by Mogwai.

Maybe try to get a game soundtrack, i'm thinking something like Diablo 1 or 2 could have what you need.

Nox Arcana is a classic.
So is Lustmord (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gB5J8K52O9M&feature=PlayList&p=DA699166B7D3CB58&playnext=1&index=22).
And my personal favorite for Call of Cthulhu and most things related: Bohren and the Club of Gore (bohren & der club of gore - constant fear).

Nox Arcana (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXCgqlxKuwQ) have an album called Necronomicon, which will probably fit the theme, given the name.
Sunn o))) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vG0_i_Dkk2Q) (pronounced 'Sun') are very good for creepy mood with long run times and minimal vocals. They're like the soundtrack to your own personal apocalypse.

EDIT: It seems Sunn o)) is posted on Youtube in 10-minute slots. Go with something like Spotify, Grooveshark or Last.fm for full songs.

If you have a good bit of time (and patience), you could potentially turn any piece of music "scary" by running it through a few filters in Audacity. Or maybe make spooky music spookier.

Reverse --> Reverb/Echo --> Reverse is supposed to give a strange backward echo effect.

If you want real mindf**k music, go with Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky, the original solo piano music. It practically oozes paranoia, madness, and creepyness. Here's an excerpt... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lv7JfzSuBTg&feature=related)

The name is actually "Godspeed You! Black Emperor", which makes it even loonier, and for some reason reminds me of anime episode names. /derail

I'd agree with Diablo 2--the soundtrack for that used to be downloadable from the Blizzard website, no idea if it still is!

Amber Asylum
Arcana
Atrium Cerceri
Autumn Tears
Dargaard
Dark Sanctuary
Diary of Dreams
Elend
Midnight Syndicate
Narsilion
Nox Arcana
Ophelia's Dream

All of them are dark ambiental bands that I listen to. Every one of them should have songs that you might need:) Imo Nox Arcana, Dark Sancuary and Midnight Syndicate are most worth looking into.

The main theme from the halloween movie (the original one from 1978) has a good atmosphere of paranoia and dread which might be useful to you. (as for a name, im not sure it had one) Walking home in the dark after seeing that movie, with that song on my mind, used to be a terrifying interesting experience, and who knows, maybe it'll have the same effect on you/your players. Hope this helps!

Can't go wrong with some Moonspell songs, although I can see how the fact that most of them are with vocals, and pretty focused on them, can make them not suitable.

Although this song I can see this song as a dramatic herald of something incoming. It's creepy, at least to me.

Slow Down! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVSCDhipeV0)

Especially if you can use lyrics somehow... :smallwink:

in the right context, almost any music is creepy. Whatever that tune the children were singing in The Birds, for example.

Well, yes but since I don't know much about this game, nor I'm very good writer, I stick to more universal propositions. :smallwink:

Shining theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QBnadB7vU0&feature=related) is somehow obvious, but good anyway.

This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h08Qx4kThUI) one has some pretty loud harsh guitars, which can disrupt spookiness, but I can easily hear it as creepy in right mood.

This one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFPjwcbbXjs) has a lot of lyrics, but I can see it fitting, especially if no one will understand the lyrics (which are also pretty creepy, but that's not the point).

Black Angels, by George Crumb (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqchvQeZjjo). It's something I already intend to be using for a horror thing myself. Just listen to the beginning of it. The whole piece is like 20 minutes long or something, as it's split into lots and lots of sections.

His spoken word pieces are also often abit twisted

Try literally anything on the various Silent Hill soundtracks. Akira Yamaoka (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akira_Yamaoka) is a genius at making atmospheric songs; they are nearly all excellent for building a disturbing & creepy mood.

Was so awesome when that started playing in the episode.

I never found it so, but I've been told by everyone that the soundtrack from The Village is extremely creepy in its own way.

Some of the creepier ones:
The Bad Color (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1pMlo2Re7I)
Cannot See His Color (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CrkQWFHm-8)
Forbidden Line (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXJg9mGx3Bs)
The Gravel Road (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJEk824VIas)

Others
The Hand of Fate - Signs soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itQWlQLHgY4) (this on the other hand is creepy as hell)
Nightmare - Brainbug (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4YiM4JcLtA&feature=av2n)
Heirate Mich - Rammstein (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4tn7lAz58k)
Mercede's Lullaby (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXe-L0ptwc8) - Pan's Labyrinth soundtrack

Marillion
2010-08-09, 09:02 AM
Black Star (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6LK7234BUk), The Last Day (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6gR2gFIFgQ) and Disintegration (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXlGFLRtZMg) by Lustmord

World War Three - The Final Conflict by Saviour Machine,
Parts 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtubILzoXIg) and 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZZDm3XrS5g), as well as Mark of the Beast (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aZ8Yj0yjvE[/url), which in my opinion is creepier but is more lyrically focused.

Who...Are you? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dV67Ee9kmRg) from the FFVII soundtrack

Three (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0NtJtKagxM) and Four (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-cjNcCvw9g) Leary Biscuits by Tiamat, though it's more mind-screwy than creepy

The music from this scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-T2cxfHe_4) from Visions of Suffering. The video may be disturbing.

And this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ)...it may be the most terrifying music ever created.
