So some random shortcut popped up on my desktop today that called itself "debug". No matter how much I delete it, it always comes back. I scanned it with Malwarebytes and Adaware, but nothing showed up. So my question is, what on earth is it?

I know sometimes when a program errors and the like, it'll throw a file on the desktop every time it does. I know Java used to do this to me. What is it a shortcut TO or what file type is it? Only thing I can think of right now...

Just a shortcut to a blank Text document...

Right click it and look at the Properties and see if it has an original location somewhere on there (it should).

If you just double clicked on the shortcut to see where it went, it probably ran an executable that opened notepad (to mask some malicious activity).

Right click, get properties, and tell us what the target field says.

I right clicked and clicked on properties, but I can't see anything that says "target field" where might I find this?

There's a couple tabs at the top of the Properties window, it should be under the Shortcut tab labeled as "target" or some such...

Nope. General, Security, Details, and Previous Versions, and none of them contain anything like target.

I probably should have mentioned this before in the thread, but I'm using windows 7.

I'm using Win 7 too... Are you sure its actually a shortcut, because my shortcuts have a "Shortcut" tab between the "General" and "Details" tabs, and non-shortcuts, obviously, don't have that tab...

It's not a shortcut, because actual ones do indeed have that open, they also have Compatibility.

Apparently it's a file of some sort. It takes up 0 bytes of space and reads nothing on Notepad. When I try to delete it it says that it can't be deleted because i have this file opened on Internet Explorer. My only window open is the playground, so I'm going to have to assume it's from the playground somehow.

The question is, what is it supposed to do? Why hasn't it been here yesterday when I opened the playground?

Ctrl-alt-del
Click the tab Processes or something like that, for me, it's second tab from the left. Check if it is in that list.

I'm afraid it's not there, and compatibility mode dosen't matter.

Looks like I took a screenshot of a link and highlighted the target line for nothing...http://i718.photobucket.com/albums/ww187/shazarak/Target.jpg?t=1281084276
