View Full Version : Question to the giant

i know this will probably see mquite stupid but with the exception of Elan no one has actully had a hair cut or shave or anything similar that i can recall in the OOTS comic.

my question is this.

why hasn't thier hair grown?

ok i know hayley got a haircut from her rival
Elan had a shave in newport i think it was and something happened with V and the alignment change but Durkons beard hasn't grown any, nor has belkars tiny amount of hair, i assume roy naturally chose to be bald and thus shaves reguarly but thier main heads of hair or facial hair hasn't grown much / at all.

just thought i'd ask was all.

i appologies if this is in the wrong area if it is, can a moderator please move it, sorry if it seems pointless but i was just curious to know was all.

The hair cuts and shaves are obviously off-panel, of course, for the same reasons you rarely see anyone taking a dump or eating unless it's funny or important: it's a waste of panel space.

Alternatively, the Giant uses pre-drawn templates for each character and rarely changes them.

fair enough i was just thinking it had been like 6 months since hayley had her hair trimmed by her rival would of thought it would of started to grow back, it was meerly just a humble question no offence ment or anything.

Belkar and Roy are both practically bald.

V's hair DID get longer.

Haley got a haircut.

That leaves Durkon and Elan. I think we can just assume they've had haircuts too and we can all be happy. I'm more interested in the next plot movement than the appearance of their hair, to be honest.

For that matter they haven't brushed their teeth! Tooth decay! They haven't taken a bath! They haven't cleaned their ears! They haven't cut their fingernails! The horror!

Roy is bald, belkar has VERY SHORT HAIR

Haylet got a haircut i mentioned and i did say before i wasn't sure about V's hair to be honest i don't remember how it got longer but i'll flick back through them.

i mentioned Eland had a shave but my point prodimantly still stands, why doesn't thier hair get longer, especially hayleys seeing as she had it cut.

true the party has only been back together for about 2 or 3 weeks but didn't she get it cut by her rival a little over 2 months ago?.

V was still with the alignment change thing with the soul splice, didn't they still have to get the diamonds and stuff, also didn't they spend a week in a dessert city trying to find an old map, they wasted a couple days there thanks to belkar, also they spent erm i think it was a week searching in the dessert for the gate and then got almost blown up. also the week or so they spent with azuralites when roy was raised didn't he refrence it would take a week to get his armor back into usable condition?

i dunno i might be remembering things wrong but my question is still valid, yes the giant may use templates, yes it might be a far less time then i've thought and thus would explain it. but we won't really know the awnser untill the giant awnsers, assuming he does.

V was still with the alignment change thing with the soul splice, didn't they still have to get the diamonds and stuff, V took care of that nicely.

also didn't they spend a week in a dessert (sic or very tasty) city trying to find an old map, they wasted a couple days there thanks to belkar,
It seemed to me to be an afternoon, not a week. Was there specific time mentioned in comic or by the Giant?

Half the night, not a week. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0666.html)

You think the answer that there is some magic that prevents bodily functions from functioning at will for every person is more likely than 'it's really boring to show every single thing that happens to the characters, so I'll just stick (hehe) to the plot'? Good luck on your answer.

Because it's a comic strip! Geez, it's no different for the OotS than it is for the Simpsons. Things like that just don't happen in cartoons. You seriously expect Rich to take the time out of his schedule to answer this for you? I'd prefer he was working on the comic, cheers. :smallsigh:

Itous

the diffrence between the simpsons and oots is that with the simpsons its obvious time has elapsed between each episode, with oots its a continous thing.

time does pass in the comic there for hair should grow.

like with a stage show if a character gets hit on stage, it should graduly get worse over the duration of the show especially if its clear a day or two has passed. its called being an artist, something rich knows alot about, i'm more than happy to accept it happens off pannel but this question is directed at the giant and my mind will only be at rest when i've heard from him, its doubtful i ever will but still, he is the only one who can confirm what happens

Panel five may be of some help to you. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0733.html)

Comic strips, animated cartoons, whatever - the artists don't illustrate character's hair getting slightly longer as time passes unless there's a good reason for it. It just doesn't happen. Expecting Rich to justify why he doesn't do it either is just ludicrous.

Elan had a shave because Nale had stuck a false beard on him and he wanted rid of it. Crystal cut Haley's hair to get at her, and presumably because Rich wanted to redesign her character look. And if he wanted to do that in the first place, he's not going to go to the trouble of gradually reversing the process, is he?

Itous

yes there does, time passes there for hair grows, time effects things, its not much to ask a humble question of "why isn't there hair growing"

if its kept short for templates, fine, if they get it trimmed off pannel, fine, but you are not the giant and thus cannot truely awnser this question. so kindly back off

maybe but i guess we'll have to wait and find out won't we

The comic REGULARLY jumps between days. We've seen them in towns SEVERAL TIMES. And its' not unreasonable to think that the guys have shaving kits and mirrors on their persons, just like any traveler.

You're being ridiculously pedantic. Do you also want an explanation of when they're going to the bathroom and eating? Because that's not shown with any regularity either. :smallsigh:

Sorry Itous, but I'm going to have to agree with Nimrod's Son on this one.

Just to give a different answer from everyone else:

Maybe in the OOTS verse people have to simply want their hair to grow or not, and when they want it to, it will... They just all like the way their hair is right now :smalltongue:

The Giant doesn't answer questions just because someone asks them, and he certainly doesn't answer questions where the answer has been correctly given about a dozen times by other posters.

And insistence that this is somehow an open question until he himself answers is just going to make him even LESS likely to answer, because he wouldn't want to encourage other people to ask inane questions like this one.

They also do not have noses. How to they breathe? It was never shown in the comic that their chests were bigger than in some other, so there is no way to know they breathe. They must be dead by now! Unless Rich tells us his characters...

... really, drop it. You never see Darth Vader do regular things. Stories just jump to the interesting parts of the story. You might want to read "How to Travel With a Salmon: And Other Essays" by Umberto Eco. Check the section about pornography and your answer why "real" stories do not show "boring everyday things" as brushing your teeth or just driving from one place to the other will be there.
Another essay will show you how to properly play Cowboy and Indian, it's also entertaining and educational.

I don't know about you, but I don't have haircuts all that often. Maybe once every four months or so. And hair growth in that time is - well, it's pretty noticeable, but it doesn't completely change my appearance. I think the same cartoon figure could stand for me before and after a cut.

As for Roy, there may be medical reasons for his baldness. I know one person who had skin cancer on his scalp - he's fine now, but completely bald and without ever having to shave at all. So there are always other possibilities.

Cartoons aren't the only ones that ignore that. Look at Lost and the perma-five oclock shadow

Or, and far more likely, anyone who fights up close can tell you that hair is a liability. Long hair is easy to grab a hold of. When you're in a real fight, and not a tournement with rules, a shaved head is best.

He even states that he shaves his head in Origin of PCs.

We know Roy shaved when he was at fighter college- since his dad mentions it. But he also said "Figured you'd beat genetics to the punch, huh?"- so maybe now Roy is nearly 30, he doesn't need to shave nearly as much, since his natural baldness has kicked in.

This is just a guess though.

From the FAQ
Q: Hey, in Panel X, the character is doing Y, but in Panel X+1, the character is doing Z. What happened?
A: Between panels, the character moved/cast a spell/had a spell cast on him/etc. There are limited panels in each strip, and I give priority to panels that tell jokes first, then advance the plot, and then, only if I have extra room, do I show transitional panels that are not strictly necessary. Use your imagination when it comes to exactly how it happened.

Seems relevant and it's the word of the Giant, so it should satisfy you. Seeing Durkon trim his beard does not tell a joke or advance the plot, so there's really no reason to show it.
