Now then--I am considering running a West Marches style game for my group. To summarize for those of you with short attention spans, it is a game centered on the exploration and adventuring outward in one direction into the wilderness, with very few intelligent NPC's to interact or talk with out there, and lots of craziness to find and explore. However, I have an issue--my players don't seem too keen on playing Dungeons and Dragons, for some reason. They'd rather use another system. Does anyone have any ideas?

It has to be a system with a lot of focus on combat, since a lot of the game would be combat. Social skills are not going to be very valuable in this sort of game either. I would prefer to use a fantasy sort of setting, but I would be open to the idea of modern technology or a postapocalyptic setting, or even steam/cyberpunk. The last, and possibly most important, thing is that there has to be a clear system of character development, whether it be in strict 'levels' or not. No character improvement means no ability to explore further into the wilds.

RuneQuest (Mongoose's newest version (http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/home/series.php?qsSeries=39) is great).

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (older versions).

Conan d20 or Iron Heroes, if they're not objecting to d20, just to D&D.

The Riddle of Steel, if you can find it anywhere. There is no better combat system in existence. You'll have to change the advancement system (the Companion has a bunch of alternative rules).
