The Eboncrag Sniper

The Eboncrag Order was founded 600 years ago by a group of dwarves and gnomes under the leadership of DeGail Orgdimon, a notorious dwarf assassin. They were originally formed to provide specialized killers to protect the dwarf and gnome races from their enemies. Over time they have lost their ideals and now there is little to differentiate them from other assassin guilds other than their strict adherence to political neutrality and their phenomenal skill with the crossbow.

The Eboncrag Order’s symbol is a silver disk with a pair of eyes framed by the Mark of DeGail.

The majority of the Eboncrag order is made up of dwarfs and gnomes but there are a few humans and Halflings. Most elves prefer bow archery too much to consider this class.

Class Features
All of the following are class features of the Eboncrag Sniper prestige class.
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Eboncrag Snipers are proficient with the hand, light, and heavy crossbow, dagger (any type), short spear, spear, short sword and cutlass. Eboncrag Snipers are proficient with light armor but not with shields.
Mark of DeGail (Su): The Mark of DeGail is the mark of the Eboncrag Order. It is a magical face tattoo depicting two perfectly horizontal lines above and below the eyes spanning the entire width of the face, and two perfectly vertical lines to the right and left of the characters dominant eye spanning the entire height of the face (character must declare which eye is dominant at 1st Eboncrag Sniper level and it does not change without magical intervention. If the dominant eye changes the Mark of DeGail must be modified, see below. The Mark of DeGail cannot frame both eyes, it must be one or the other). The Mark of DeGail can only be applied by an Eboncrag Sniper to another Eboncrag Sniper or to himself. The Mark of DeGail can be covered by any mundane or magical means but it must not be altered. If the Mark is altered, or if 50% or more of it is destroyed or removed (ex: the skin the Mark is on is burned or cut off) the character loses all Eboncrag Sniper (Su) abilities, the ability to perform crossbow death attacks, and cannot progress further in the prestige class. Applying or reapplying the Mark of DeGail requires an hour of undisturbed time and 300gp of tattoo ink and herbs. Despite being magical in nature the Mark of DeGail only show up under magical detection if the one doing the detecting makes a successful DC 15 Knowledge (arcana) check on top of his detect magic check. Success of this check only confirms that the tattoo is magical, a separate DC 15 Knowledge (arcane) or Bardic Knowledge check is necessary to identify the tattoo as the Mark of DeGail.
Bayonet proficiency: Eboncrag Snipers are often armed with just their crossbows so they train extensively with crossbow mounted bayonets. Beginning at 1st level Eboncrag Snipers do not take the -2 penalty when using bayonets (but not bow blades). (see Complete Scoundrel for details on bayonets)
Crossbow mastery: The Eboncrag Sniper’s whole focus is his crossbow so he gets +1 to all attack rolls with any crossbow type for which he has the weapon focus feat at level 1. This bonus stacks with all other bonuses and increases to +2 at level 4, +3 at level 7, and +4 at level 10. Whenever the multi shot feat is used apply this bonus to only one shot per crossbow. If the character uses one crossbow in each hand the bonus applies to both crossbows.
Improved caster level (Ex): Beginning at 1st level the Eboncrag Sniper adds his class level to his Assassin class level to determine his effective spell caster level. This does not grant him the spells he would gain by progressing in the Assassin prestige class.
Sneak Attack: Beginning at 2nd level this is exactly like the rogue ability of the same name. The extra damage dealt increases by +1d6 every other level (2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th). If an Eboncrag Sniper gets a sneak attack bonus from another source (such as rogue levels), the bonuses on damage stack.
Mounted scope (Ex): At 3rd level the Eboncrag Sniper learns how to build a mounted scope. This is a modified spyglass that can be attached to crossbow. The character can attach the scope to any crossbow but only gains benefits if he has the weapon focus feat for the crossbow type it is attached to. The scope grants the crossbow a stackable +1 to damage and is required for some of the characters other abilities (crossbow death attack and ignore damage reduction). Whether a scope is mounted or not it can be used as a normal spyglass. A mounted scope costs 1000 gp to construct, a character may have as many scopes as he wants but can only gain advantages from one at a time and only if he is holding the crossbow with both hands.
Ignore damage reduction (Su): Starting at 3rd level the Eboncrag Sniper can ignore 1/- of any type of damage reduction while using a crossbow type with a mounted scope that he has the weapon focus feat for. This bonus increases to 2/- at 6th level and 3/- at 9th level.
Crossbow Death Attack (Ex): At 5th level, if an Eboncrag Sniper studies his victim for 6 rounds and then makes a sneak attack with a crossbos that successfully deals damage, the sneak attack has the additional effect of possibly either paralyzing or killing the target (Eboncrag Sniper’s choice). While studying the victim, the Eboncrag Sniper can undertake other actions so long as his attention stays focused on the target and the target does not detect the Eboncrag Sniper or recognize the Eboncrag Sniper as an enemy. If the victim of such an attack fails a Fortitude save (DC 10 + the Eboncrag Sniper’s class level + the Eboncrag Sniper’s Int modifier) against the kill effect, she dies. If the saving throw fails against the paralysis effect, the victim’s mind and body become enervated, rendering her helpless and unable to act for 1d6 rounds plus 1 round per level of the Eboncrag Sniper. If the victim’s saving throw succeeds, the attack is just a normal sneak attack. Once the Eboncrag Sniper has completed the 6 rounds of study, he must make the death attack within the next 3 rounds. If a death attack is attempted and fails (the victim makes her save) or if the Eboncrag Sniper does not launch the attack within 3 rounds of completing the study, 6 new rounds of study are required before he can attempt another death attack. This attack can only be performed by the character if his is using a crossbow type he has the weapon focus feat for and which is equipped with a mounted scope. The attacks maximum range is equal to one base range increment of the crossbow type he is using (spells or weapon enchantments such as ’distance’ do not change this) or 50ft, whichever is shorter. The character can make a number of crossbow death attacks per day equal to his total character class level and may make only one such attack per turn; no using two crossbows to have two chances.
Night Vision (Ex): At 5th level, an Eboncrag Sniper adept gains darkvision out to 60 feet and low-light vision.
Multi-shot Construction (Ex): Beginning 7th level an Eboncrag Sniper can modify any crossbow type he has the weapon focus feat for so that it can fire multiple bolts. To be able to fire multiple bolts that character must have the multi-shot feat. When doing so all the rules associated with the multi-shot feat apply. However the type of crossbow determines how much it can be modified. Hand crossbows can be modified to fire 2 bolts at once, light crossbows can fire up to 3 bolts and heavy crossbows can fire up to 4 bolts. Certain exotic crossbows can be modified as well; aquatic and giant crossbows are treated as heavy crossbows for the purpose of how many bolts they can fire but Icechuckers can only be modified to fire 2 icicles or javelins. Repeating crossbows cannot be modified in this way.
Silent shot (Ex): At 8th level an Eboncrag Sniper can make successful ranged sneak attacks while hidden without revealing himself.
Hideaway crossbow (Su): At 9th level an Eboncrag Sniper can magically collapse any crossbow he has the weapon focus feat for with a command word (a swift action). The crossbow folds up into a bundle two size categories smaller than its user, making it easy to conceal. He gains a +2 bonus on Sleight of Hand checks to conceal a hideaway weapon when it's folded up (as if it were a dagger). A second command word (also a swift action) causes the weapon to unfold to its normal shape. This ability does not stack with the weapon enchantment of the same name. This ability does not work if the crossbow has a bayonet attached.
Hide in Plain Sight (Su): At 9th level, an Eboncrag sniper can use the Hide skill even while being observed. As long as he is within 10 feet of some sort of shadow, an assassin can hide himself from view in the open without having anything to actually hide behind. He cannot, however, hide in his own shadow.
Fatigue immunity (Ex): At 10th level, an Eboncrag sniper becomes immune to all forms of magical fatigue and any substances or abilities that confer fatigue (like barbarian rage). However he can only delay normal, everyday fatigue for three days, after which he requires a full nights sleep (eight hours). So basically he only needs to sleep every three nights.
