Or ways to freak the players out no matter how mundane.

My PC's have developed a healthy fear of certain things thanks to me.

Dolls in general- Who doesn't like dolls ? More so if they get up at night and move around on their own.

A jar of eyes balls-Blinking human eyes. That gives the owner an ability to see Hidden and Invisible objects if they replace one of their eyes with one from the jar.

Clown Dolls- Like normal dolls but worse. Only they get up and move around at night, protect their wards from threats, both real and imagined.

Spectral Lanterns- Cursed magic items that are given wide berth by more experienced adventures for their random effects like habit of reanimating near by dead and acting like a beacon for most lesser undead. The upside is that it will never go out even under water, can ward off lesser undead, has spell like effects that can be activated. ( working on the stats for this one, I've already gifted my poor PCs with one, should be interesting to see how they handle it )

A Scarecrow that is actually a golem that comes to life and kills three victims placed in the corn\wheat field by the town and guarantees good crops after it kills the three sacrificial victims.

The Lantern of the Drowned Sailor- A lantern whose light leads its welder to underwater or buried treasure, but the one who brings the treasure up or digs it up latter drowns in very odd ways.

Ventriloquist Dummies- Extra creepy. They come to life with a will of their own, control their owners like puppets, don't approve of who ever the owner may be in love with.

Scarlett Cinema- An old time movie camera that can bring characters from horror movies to life, and grant wishes in return for murders.

A Friend to the End- A lonely child finds a very life like doll in an attic, cellar or abandoned farm house. The doll is mundane at first, but becomes more and more malevolent, stalking, terrorizing and even killing any one who dares try to take it away from the child.

The Charnel Pit- Pit - A painting which acts as a portal, sending live victims into a charnel pit and sending back corpses in return, laden with gifts

The Hares Luck- A hares foot that once belonged to the captain of the ill fated ship, the Hares Luck. The crew was lured into a shallow reef by local towns people building massive bonfires on the beach, a old trick they often used to they could loot the stranded ships and kill the crew at low tide.

The hares foot compels the owner to kill all the people that were responsible for the demise of the ships crew and caption in return, it grants temporally bonuses. If the owner does not murder those responsible, the owner grows more and more increasingly compelled to walk out into the sea and drowned.

Dragon Magazine does have 3.5 stats for Scarecrows as a monster (Issue 355, May 2007)

And in 4E, MM3 has Scarecrow stats.

Wait....if the jar is full of eyes, how do they blink? You blink with your eyelids, not your eyeballs.

Let the number of PCs be C. Give the PCs a jar of C eyeballs. C-1 of these eyeballs grant See Invisibility to a bearer. One of the eyes makes the bearer percieve every person of his same alignment as his worst fear.

If yo really want to mess with their heads, make it a dread scarecrow or give it fire resistance. Watching it shrug off a fire based attack then precede to rip the arm off some one and beat them with has a way of lowering morale and calling Horror Checks

Or it could in actually be a spell rune golem, trying to set one fire only makes them very angry.
