View Full Version : Good names for a fantasy airship

In an upcoming campaign, our party will be the owners of an Astral airship. The most important part of owning a ship is, of course, having an awesome name. We've already gone through all the clichéd names (Nautilus, Flying Dutchman, Serenity), and we're looking for something creative. Suggestions?

Depends. If your the only ship in the sky? You'll want something distinctive. If your heroic, but there are a lot of ships? You'll want something memorable (Like "The Eureka Moment"). If you are a not nice person, and there are a lot of ships, you'll want a name that sows confusion (Like "They're one of ours Sir!").

There are a LOT of ships, airships are as numerous in this campaign as water-based ships are in a regular setting (or in real life). Ours is quite tiny by most standards, and made out of the cheapest materials we could find (stone).

in the last game I played in, the boat our bard/dread pirate owned was named the Flatulent Peon. It was built to serve as a ferry acrosss a small lake, but by the time we were done with the campaign, it had been turned into a submersible airship and we had survived a crash into a castle because we were riding inside it at the time. Also, it was bright pink and the bowsprit was the ugliest orcish maiden the carver could imagine

When I said "creative", I didn't mean "random", people. :smalltongue:
It should still sound like something a sane person would name a ship, and be cool enough that we'll enjoy saying it often too.

The Phallic Analogy.

Tell me about it. When I told my DM that his elongated designs with pointy ends were, uh, evocative of something, he countered with "Obviously. These ships are designed by wizards who've spent most of their lives in a library."

Since this is a small ship of stone cruising through the air, how about Giant's Herald, Giant's Messenger, or Giant's Response?

I like the way you think. But "Giant's X" is confusing, cause people might think we have something to do with actual Giants. Having "Stone", "Castle", or "Fortress" in the name might work.

What kind of campaign setting is it? What role do the PC's play?

Weird campaign setting my DM thought up... best described as "D&D in space". There are pockets of Material Plane ranging in size from a village to a continent, scattered throughout the Astral Plane. People use Astral ships to travel between these pockets. We're just typical adventurers who saved up for a ship, though I'm sure the DM has grand plans for us.

<god's/godess's> <random physical blemish> like "Yondalla's Carbuncle" or "The Mockery's Boil."

<material>
: "The Adamantine Envy" or "The Mithral Secret."

I like the first idea, but there's a great many ships that actually represent a church, so being called, say, "Garl Glittergold's Nugget" might get people to think we actually represent him.

The
Windwarden
Shadow in the Flame
Egret's Rest
Song of the Heart

Fury on High

You should name Dragonforce songs. :smallwink:

Black Blade
Stormbringer

Dark Vengence
Led Zepplin (Why not?)

Actually, the current name is Evermore (from Battle of Evermore, a Led Zeppelin song). That's a bit too obscure though.

In the meantime, the best our brainstorming's come up with:

Andromeda (apparently was a ship in some bad 90s sci-fi show? I didn't know)
The Freebird
The Astral Wanderer/Voyager/Seeker

If you're a roguish group, you might want to consider "Aces & Eights", the legendary "dead man's hand" of Wild Bill Hickok. It's great symbology for a small vessel, as it's that one unrevealed card that determines whether he won the hand. Also the name just rings of style in my book.

Or, perhaps, the Jagger? Though I suppose he was more of a rolling stone than a flying one.

If it's going to be heavily armed or used aggressively, it could be the Rock's Fall. (Everyone dies.)

Names I've used otherwise:
Mereg, City of Doors (though it was more a flying citidel than an airship)
The Zephyr
The Hammerhead
The Anne Elise

What are you looking for exactly? Something grand? Understated? Ironic? Sarcastic? Epic? Mundane? Knowing what the temperment of your group is (or the source of the ship if you didn't commission it) would help to make suggestions.

I've had the pleasure of personally owning an airship in character twice now. They were the Anthelion, and the Silent Threnody.

Astral warships should have deathly, foreboding names, like that one, the Heartplunge.

My DM and I always fall back on Star Trek for airship names.

My first airship was the Enterprise... not so subtle. I also managed to crash it about four times.

Second was the Dauntless.

Next one, I'm thinking the Intrepid or something.

You can find huge lists of names of all of the Starfleet ships that have ever been in movies, episodes, books... Some of them are pretty cool.

Also, for an original name? The Quixotic sounds neat.

One of my characters owned a ship called the Avenant. I believe we ended up crashing it into the big bad's fortress. Then the villain had a ghost ship called the Emperor of Fear (it was floating horror, tanned skin for sails, skeletons chained to the mast and prow)

Other names off the top of my head:
The Frozen Maiden
Castle Zeppenbach (rip of of GG's Castle Wulfenbach)
The Stormlight
The Cloudcutter
The Lusitania
The Damocles

There's a couple of good mythology ones in Trek, too. Our current Prime Directive campaign takes place on the USS Theseus, which is named on a list as a ship that's still working. I think there was an Athena or something, too.

Steely Glint
Grey Area
Subtle Shift In Emphasis

Drat. Someone already suggested the Blackjack. In the FFVI vein, though, how about the Falcon?

(And since the person who mentioned the Blackjack provided the musical theme as well, here's the Falcon's: [link] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGwrbXGq7Tc&feature=related))

I was thinking of suggesting Falcon, but it's a bit more of a generic name. Also, Searching for Friends is probably my favorite song, hands down. It's not exactly the airship theme, though, more of an overworld theme, a very awesome one at that.

Wow, I am overwhelmed by this response. I've never seen so many "stone" puns... You guys rock. :smalltongue:

In terms of what we were looking for, I think the main three criteria are

1. Sounds cool.
2. Sounds cool after you say it 10 times/session for 20 sessions (i.e not a joke name that we'll quickly get tired of).
3. Isn't a name everyone immediately associates with another ship.

If you're a roguish group, you might want to consider "Aces & Eights", the legendary "dead man's hand" of Wild Bill Hickok. It's great symbology for a small vessel, as it's that one unrevealed card that determines whether he won the hand. Also the name just rings of style in my book.

This is definitely my favourite suggestion so far. You and I think alike, Sir (or Madam)! Makes me wish I was playing some kind of CG Rogue or Swashbuckler or Bard so that that name would fit better.

What sorta design is it, aside from being made of stone(which sorta implies that it's not nautical ship shaped?

Here's the design specs:

So, basically, a stone zeppelin... the ship was literally made by the party Cleric (Stone Shape every day for a couple months) and Bard (Bardic Knack = ranks in every Craft skill = custom-made everything).

Hmm... a flying stone fortress...

The Bastion or just Bastion
X's Hammer/Hammer of X
The Veritable X
The Resolute X
Promontory's Flight literally, "that big flying mass of land"

where x is descriptive text

Edit: on a side note, The props generate propulsion, how does it get lift? Permanenced overland flight? Did you have to pay any casting costs or did you just find a big stone. I am thinking about shamelessly copying doing this too...

Well, like I said, the ship moves through the Astral Plane, which doesn't actually have gravity. Using the main engines we can have up to 200ft (Clumsy) fly speed. For in-gravity flight, we have what's called an Elemental Engine, which is basically DM Fiat and DM Rip-Off combined in one (13,000 gp gives us 60ft (Perfect) fly speed). Basically, a bound elemental's (in our case, Air) energy is used to magically propel the ship. In that way, I think it's similar to Eberron, which I think uses bound elementals within a lightning ring to propel their airships. The funny thing about that is that a pilot's most crucial skill is not Profession: Pilot but Speak Language: Auran...

Wait, if it's a stone zeppelin, what about Lead Zeppelin? I know, I know, it'll get old after a while.

The Zodiac. It's mystic-sounding, associated with the sky and it's the French word for an inflatable boat.

Alternately: The Really Invincible III

it's the French word for an inflatable boat.
Nitpick: It's a brand name everyone uses for inflatable boats. There's probably also some technocratic term nobody knows or uses.

Is your party a group of mercenaries(If this has already been established as true or false, please don't hurt me too much for my ignorance :smalleek:)?

If so, I'd like to toss out the following names from Schlock: Mercenary:

That is just the most creative name for a ship I've ever heard. I would never have come up with that.
