Is there a reason they aren't statted out for race use? Is it because their lives are so short, or because they're isolatory, or what?

Because a lot of players think it is stupid to play a walking mushroom.

Probably. They are also described as being tied to a particular colony. You could probably adapt the race for play, but the LA might be a bit steep. Plant type. Telepathy. Some of them get hallucenagenic spores. Probably at least a +2.

Feh. Oh well.

You could adapt the race easily enough. Rather than working with the lower ranked guardians and workers, start with the sovereign. It would have a fairly high LA, at least +3, but it would have access to potion making, several spore attacks/debuffs and the ability to found a colony.

Leadership would be an almost required feat. Due to their fast reproduction, the leader could replace lost followers pretty quickly. Probably not the most optimized monster race, but it could be fun to play.
