OK, what is the LA on these things? I can't see that they have one, but that would defy the rules of everything, seeing as an Iron Half-Golem has +11 natural armour and a breath weapon that does 1d4 con damage on the primary damage, and instant kill on the secondary.

Am I reading this wrong, or are they really that overpowered?

No LA typically means that it's not to be used as a player character template. It's not the same thing as LA 0.

Sorry, I wasn't clear, it said:

Advancement: As character class.

I assumed that meant it doesn't have an LA +

That just means that NPCs still take classes to be stronger post-template.

Which update is this? I looked in the MMII errata on www.wizards.com but couldn't see anything about Half-Golems.

Not errata. The 3.5 update booklet. (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20030718a)

Ah, thank you, that makes a lot more sense to me now

If you really want to play one, though, I think the last "What should half-golem LA be?" thread decided +5 to +7 LA would be appropriate (and would be one of the few cases where an LA above +2 is actually somewhat accurate).
