THE SHaFT? You want to know about The SHaFT?

Kid. The SHaFT is... it's kinda like... some sort of...

Well, it's Drolk's and Doc's little secret hideout/love nest where they insidiously/lovingly plan out cunning ways to kill/love all of the regular GiTP/ChHa community members.

In The SHaFT, they will run a long gauntlet of perilous tests, each cunningly disguised as a game against/with them. This involves many, many uses of ████████████ for so long, that the screaming will ring in your ears, as well as application of various ████████████, some of which have not been cleared for general human consumption. Some people speculate that The SHaFT is actually █████████████████, also commonly known as Android Hell.

In the greater scheme of things, The SHaFT is also where the weak are weeded out from the strong for use in some sort of world-wide fight syndicate. Both Drolkcal and Dr Girlfriend will often subject potential candidates to gladitorial combat against predetermined teams to see how effectively they perform under stressful conditions. Their techniques are so secretive that the entire server is locked down while in use for this testing that normal passcodes do not work, as they begin ████████████ ██████████, whereupon the remaining survivors are forced to ███████████ ████████████. Their personal fight team go under the moniker, Sea Slug Team, presumably because they have been ███████████████.

We can only speculate about the rest of these gory details.

Oddly enough the map was quite balanced for all classes, Besides the middle point there were lots of ambush points for pyros, I may have to change up the mid point though, It seems hard to cap/easy to defend.

I'll be honest, No Mercy looks like a gimmick map. But as long as it's nomiatable and not in regular rotation, it should be fine.

I've played Aerospace since it's first beta, and I can say that it looks a lot better than it plays. Cluttered hangar and tiny intelligence room makes it a huge camp fest.

But we... can soon trade weapons with which to make scrap metal for our hats in TF2. Therefore Team Fortress 2 is becoming more like a fully simulated hat-based economy. using the pretty much worthless otherwise Razorback as the smallest denomination:

2 Razorbacks make a scrap, 3 scraps make a claim, 3 claims make a fine, 3 fines make a hat(!). 4 fines and a token for a specific. Three slot or class weapons for a token, three tokens to a claim.

2 rbs = 1 sc
3 sc = 1 cl
3 cl = 1 fn
3 fn = Ht
4 fn/1 Tk = SpH

A random hat therefore costs 54 rbs, 27 sc, 9 cl, 3 fn or 27 Tk.

The total of my inventory is therefore worth about 4 rbs, 20 sc, 1 cl and 4 Ht. Not counting Misc or special hats.

PS: The 'richest' person in TF2 would have all of the hats currently available, that is to say, 56 Ht. That is 52 more Ht than I have.

Anyway, I wouldn't say that the razorback is entirely useless. There are some pretty bad spies on the server sometimes that it keeps them away from you. Or they're bad enough to stab it anyway. I don't get why people don't just get the ambassador and do a headshot. Oh well.

I've done that, but it's typically pretty risky. If you're right behind someone and a teammate sees a razorback broken... Let's just say it goes downhill from there.

I've seen worse. In fact, I've played worse; my MacBook Pro has terrible venting and a barely passable graphics card, so the ultra-high FPS config I used pretty much turned off shading, lighting, and sound.

Umm... Frontier and Aerospace are both very popular maps and have been recommended numerous times beforehand.
No Mercy is somewhat niche but has also been mentioned by other folks here for map testing.

Not to shut you down or anything, but you can't really claim responsibility for big name maps appearing.

Frontier, you recommended, I believe. I saw the post. However, that's one of the most famous maps around; I wouldn't call it the height of map-searching to have found it.

I'm sorry, but unless Djinn suddenly decides he loves you, you're not getting in, even if you HAD recommended all the maps (which you didn't).

I've found that most laptops overheat way too easily to be usable for gaming. I would highly recommend a desktop and a netbook, if you need the portability.

They're fine for gaming, so long as you get one with a discrete graphics card and decent cooling. Also, get Windows; yes, Valve is helping grow the "Mac Gaming" environment, but it's just not there yet.

Ah, yes, forgot to mention that as a perfectly viable option. Bootcamp's great; too bad I could never get it to work on my mac. Apparently I would have had to back up and reformat my hard drive. :smallannoyed:

I don't recommend a mac unless you really need one. It CAN game, but grabbing one with gaming in mind is silly. I have one because it helps with work, not because Steam was coming to it.

Mostly I'm just wondering how badly a video card is needed to play most of the steam games and the like. All I've found for comparisons is running Crysis on high and how well the different cards do.

The Mobility Radeon HD 5450 in my laptop can run TF2 at medium settings and L4D2 at medium-low (I think; haven't tried it since defragging the files). As a reference.

I paid around 700-800 USD for mine, a few years ago. I later checked, and for the same price could build a quad core, near 3.0, 4 GB ram, 1TB HD, don't know about a nice case, but still.

I have a $2-2.5 thousand build for a little over $1 thousand. Totally go for it. If you need help making parts compatible, post on the forums.

My own suggestions? Corsair or Thermaltake for PSU, MSI, ASUS, or Gigabyte for the motherboard, OCZ or G.SKILL for RAM, AMD for CPU, ATI for Graphics card, and Western Digital for hard drive. Everything else is decent no matter what you get.

Mostly I'm just wondering how badly a video card is needed to play most of the steam games and the like. All I've found for comparisons is running Crysis on high and how well the different cards do.

I sat next to a guy in one of my college classes who played Left 4 Dead all class every class, with the trackpad. Apparently you can get used to it.

I believe the autobalance in use on ChHa automatically shifts the first person on the other team to die. Unfortunately that just happens to be you a lot of the time.

If you still haven't found it, an easy way is to go to the finder, type 2fort, and click the one that has .bsp at the end. Look at the bottom of said finder window; it oughta show you where that file is/how to get to it. Maps will be in that line of places you reach :P Go there.

It's doable, but as I understand it that kind of thing is very hard to get working properly so I doubt it'll become a reality.

So, big issue here.

Starcraft 2, the long awaited, triumphant return to the Koprulu Sector has finally made its way into my mind. More multidinous treachery and chaos from the triple threat teams of the Protoss, Terran and Zerg.

It is £39.99 and damn expensive for me. Because I'm not gonna get a game where I bored of being wiped in 10 minutes and lose all interest in online. It would be a waste of valuable funds.

All of you who played the SC2 Beta seem to be competent, mid-level players, I am kinda hoping to get a glimpse of the skill needed to play online. What is it like, and would you put up with an inexperienced guy learning the ropes if I got the game?

First of all, the single player game is awesome. Secondly if you like custom games then it doesn' matter if your good. That being said, it's still pricy if that's all you want, so Id wait a few months.

As for multiplayer, if you want to be good you will have to work for it. The stratagy will come fairly quickly, but being able to execute it takes time. To become good requires a lot of things to become reflex, things like constent production, micro, macro, etc. These things all need to be done simulatniously, and it ain't easy. Over the time I played the beta I moved from the 3rd to 2nd tier. So roughly 1 month of playing several games a week. Also, since the matchmaking is good you will loose about half your games, which can be fristrating. All of this being said the multiplayer is very rewarding ad a lot of fun.

I was imagining an even smaller scale, running between the toppings inside the sandvich. Run down tunnels made of curls of ham, hop through a hole in the swiss cheese and up into a cavernous room formed by the sides of the two tomato slices and topped by an arching ceiling of crisp, green lettuce. Run around the side, up a curling frond of lettuce to the top crust where the glimmering green prize - a pitted olive the size of a room - waits for your occupancy, the MANN CO. brand toothpick jutting our of the top like the mast of an ancient sailing vessel.

Valve has already been considerate enough to give us a blueprint.

If the point is inside the olive, and the main opening faces the nearest side, then the main obstacle to sniping would be the olive itself. It might need to be disproportionately large - or perhaps the olive exploded in some kind of Natascha-related accident and became more interesting terrain.

It could also be a matter of scale. If the sandvich is the right size, the snipers don't have a lot of room to work with even if they do have good sight lines, because there's very little cover. A big bite out of the middle could help reduce the area of the top and cover could be holes in the bread like SciurusDoomus suggested earlier (although I suspect that foxholes will just mean that snipers sit in them and shoot from cover instead of other people hiding in them).

If there's a big bite in the sandvich at the point opposite the long side, then the sandvich becomes roughly trapezoidal with the olive in the middle blocking most line of sight to the other side. There could be ramps at each end, so if a sniper does take up position he would have to have to watch his back instead of being tucked safely in a corner. Actually, that would probably work even without the bite if there's one at each corner, but the bite would give an opportunity to break open the other side of the olive and make it more like a tube than a cave.

I can actually see it fitting into game cannon (kinda). There's a shrinking machine, some kind of super-secret tiny Australium microchip hidden in the olive, and retro Fantastic Voyage ships could fit the visual theme.

The story behind that sniper is that he used a little geometry glitch to get up there. One of the mods (I forget exactly who) had to go into speccy mode and ask the guy to show him how to get up there to ensure that no unfair glitching shenanigans went on. The guy was a good sport, and it did just turn out to be bad map design in the end.

Yeah, he can be reached by spies. I've backstabbed loads of people up there. You just jump on the edge of the point (ridge up), and jump to the wall; it's a straight jump, no shenanigans.

I was that mod. :smallcool: It is legitimately bad map design, and only gives someone a small advantage, so I had no problem with it. Its actually a very exposed position, but since you have to look up to see the spot, most people never spot someone up there except on a deathcam. Its easy enough to flush someone out of the spot once you know they are there.

I really need to thank the guy again (I forgot his name :smalleek:) for being such a good sport about it.

From what I can tell, CPU does matter, but what matters more is your bandwidth/internet connection.

drolkcal messed up with the config and it's stuck on every time we turn tournament mode on and off.

If I read this right, to watch, you need to connect to the server on the SourceTV port (68.232.169.101:27020 should be it for SHaFT). If we're playing a comp match and a lot of people would like to watch, we can set up a proxy so that the server won't overload. You'll have to install Source Dedicated Server to access the proxy. I came in on the tail end of this, and rode out another few rounds over a few maps. You would think that a guy named Commander Rigid **** would be a total jerk, right? But he wasn't actually. I'm not sure about the whole "fun" thing. I've managed to have fun being mauled (in tf2 of course. RL is horrible) in some games. Class wars + melee only tends to be hilarious.

So, I was just playing some nice old tf2 on the server, when I get disconnect issues - happens alot to me but its normally fixed before it boots me. This time however, it full on kicked me. However, when I tried to reconnect i got an error - Steam validation rejected - which occurs now whenever I try to connect. Having googled briefly, I only found stuff about it happening on dedicated servers, so if anyone has knowledge of this sort of thing and wants to share, that'd be nice.

Anyway, thanks for all who made the comp match night so awesome. That last one was by far the best I've ever played as scout on lobby. For a while there, I was even beating the medic! Normally I'm dead last.

So, almost everyone on ChHa then? Seriously, if I got a 24hour 2fort or a vanilla server after people have left shaft, its like turning on auto aim and a 50% damage reduction.

It's just like hacking, except that you actually are that good and that they are actually that bad!

My theory/rule on the whole is: If they can survive, do decently and even excel on ChHa/SHaFT, then they probably are better than the average player. THe servers just attract people who are that good.

Well, I think it's more just that people have so much fun on the server, that we want to play better in the spirit of friendly competition.

Actually, now I have a perpetual fear of turning my back to anyone present and stand with my back to a wall at any time it is possible, as well as shooting everyone I meet, binding 'Spy!' to my middle mouse button and wear the Razorback when staying still for a long time.

It is all their fault.

I have to constantly remind myself not to turn my back as most of my deaths from spies now are face stabs due to spychecking.

Someone should also remind Thurbane that backing away into a corner as a sniper to prevent spies from backstabbing him wont prevent spies from shooting him in the head while he is scoped...

As an aside, can we rethink the decision to include ctf_mexico into the rotation? Nobody seems to like it, and in-game opinion is a unanimous decision that it's worse than 2fort. It's quite prone to stalemate, susceptible to mass sentry spam, and apparently it was designed for 6v6 matches.

Yeah. I hate that map. Perhaps No mercy could take it's place? It seems to get voted in a few times a day, and it's pretty well liked (certainly moreso than mexico). I posit the fact that we rarely finish a round of mexico before RTVing, and yet I've never seen an RTV off of No mercy.

Also, last night was a load of fun, with so many regulars running around in lobby. We seriously need to do that more regularly; it was a ton of fun.
