What is Phoenix?

Phoenix is an attempt at bringing the best 3.5 homebrew in periodic "e-zine" articles. In a way, Phoenix is rising from the ashes left behind by Wizards of the Coast and Dragon Magazine.

There have been similar attempts at bringing homebrew magazines to the playground in the past. However, most have fallen before even being in a readable magazine format. One reached the point of being posted on the forum, but it fell under the radar soon after release, unfortunately. We hope Phoenix rises above with its custom art, great, dedicated workers, and quality control.

Will Phoenix have themes (such as a "martial" theme for one, or a "fire" theme for another)?

This question is best answered by our own Djinn_In_Tonic:

"We left themes by the wayside once we realized that it's difficult, without dedicated contributors, to assemble themed issues, especially with all the multi-classing that 3.5 entails. There will be homebrew, editorials, and things like my guide (I'm actually working on turning it into a series of articles). If you want to volunteer to do some editorials, reviews, opinions, NPC articles, theory articles, or anything else you think might fit, definitely let us know!"

Will you be charging money for issues of Phoenix?

No. Djinn_In_Tonic has expressed interest in charging a dollar or two per issue if popularity soars, however. That's extremely unlikely to happen, and I'm fine with never receiving payment for this (others haven't given their thoughts on the issue), so, for now, the magazine will not cost any money, and that's unlikely to change.

Added art and organization. Is that alright, or did you have something different in mind for design?

Also, I just typed in a few new people and a couple homebrews along with your new tasks, and got to 50,065 characters. I deleted a sentence or two, so now we're barely below 50,000. Excellent.

Oh, and two people so far have sent me PMs without me asking.

Well, I was thinking of things like logo design, page layout and (if we want it) page art design (background textures, header and side images, and the like), and general art direction.

I had to delete another sentence, but it's in now and you've got design under your belt.

I can help with English, Fluff, and lists. Also, you might want to add wording as a job, to help people with the crunch of their class - making sure abilities are listed as compulsion, ranges or similar and sometimes forgotten things. I'm not sure if this would fall under english or not, but if you do add it, I'd be happy to help. :)

Seems like this falls under Mechanical Design: making sure abilities function properly, that save DCs are correct, and maybe even making minor edits to abilities for classes that might not otherwise be good enough for inclusion (with the originator's permissions, of course).

Also, where do I go to suggest homebrew to put in the book?

I just want to know how we're going to break this down.

We're probably going to need a way to decide between or combine thematically similar classes ...perhaps have the homebrewers join together in chat and hammer out new classes that combine aspects of their old ones.

Is it possible to have multiple revisions of classes or can there only be one?

It'll depend on how similar the revisions are. The difference between Realms of Chaos's gambit fighter and someone else's fighter fix is probably huge.

Also, where do I go to suggest homebrew to put in the book?

You could PM me, post your suggestions here, or go here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=162711).

You're included now, and I've changed every instance of "Djinn_in_Tonic" to "Djinn_In_Tonic." Sorry about that, Djinn.

Also, it was 50,009 characters with Zom B added in. Then it was 50,001 after I deleted two words. Darn. Fixed, though. :smallamused:

Wow. I have (*Counts*) six homebrews on that list! I wonder if that counts as having 'made it'...

Also, I'd like to suggest the Weapons of the Natural Things (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=123755) for consideration (once I redo them again...) and request a chance to remake the Byakugan Feats (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3797050&postcount=1) before they get included.

More seriously, I can do English and Fluff. I'm pretty good at English. Once you guys have selected a recognisable homebrew that's missing fluff PM it by me and I could probably fill in something. Or proofread it, if it already has fluff.

Also, Totemei, you may need to move that giant homebrew list down a post. There are definitely going to be heaps more people wanting recognition for credible contributions unlike mine. :smallwink:

I thought I'd make a "humorous" list at some point, which would include things like the birthday cake golem, the cheese golem, falling anvil, feats from the Ridiculous Feats thread, Turkeyzilla, etc.

I could probably dig up that miracle pill, too. I think Random_person made that.

Alright...I'm going to actually use this to open a discussion. Anyone on the Developer's List please feel free to contribute.

I feel we need to drop the idea of themed issues, except on very special occasions. The idea of dividing everything into themes is all well and good, but, this being 3.5 and not 4e, classes, feats, and the like aren't nicely sorted by Leader, Defender, Controller, and Striker. Is a Gish class martial or magical, for example, or do we have to do a special Gish issue? Then exacerbate that problem the the fact that maybe, after our Martial issue, The Demented One produces the single most phenomenal piece of Martial Homebrew we've ever seen. With the themes concept, we can't feature it until the next Martial issue.

I'd much rather see an actual magazine-esque production. Something where we can modulate what we release each issue. Maybe on issue we introduce two new related Martial Disciplines, a new Initiator base class, a set of Monk Feats and a new Monk revision, and a couple of caster Prestige Classes. The next time we present 2 of our favorite class revisions, Realms of Chaos' creepy otherworldly magic system, a smattering of Prestige Classes, and some new spells. As I suggested earlier, mix these up with designer interviews, articles on homebrew theory and practice, suggested houserules, and things like story or NPC hooks. Make it a good resource with some exclusive material that people would want, so that those looking at it do more than just find the stuff on the forums themselves.

Vaynor

I think "gish" is a wide enough theme to warrant its own issue.

I also think "martial" might be a bit too wide. I think we need to be a bit more specific with our themes. Maybe a "martial" issue that includes ToB-style martial content, a "melee" issue with all non-magical non-ToB stuff, then a gish, arcane, divine, cunning, etc.

I also like the idea of a magazine without a specific theme, instead, having many specific sub-themes (if that makes sense). That way you get specialized content in the form of more than just a single class (or similar) but it still isn't too specialized and you get some variety.

Djinn, do you feel like doing the interviews, or should I or someone else (via PM, you mean, right?)?

What about me?

Sorry about that. You're added.

If we go this route, I'd be happy to conduct 1 designer interview per release. I also have a friend who majored in journalism who might be willing to volunteer his time to the cause.

As for smaller lists, I was thinking basically of how Dragon Magazine often functioned: more like a magazine composed of individual articles. Maybe we release 2-3 Paladin prestige classes in one issue, and maybe the other articles have nothing to do with Paladins. Minor sub-themes, like articles, rather than huge, issue-wide material.

Cool. Added "Interview" as a job.

That makes sense about the sub-themes and such.

Probably a 1-man job there, as we'd only have 1 per issue.

Djinn I really like the way you're thinking about this and I think it is almost definitely the best way to go about this.

Time to list the sub-themes for each article, this will require some thought as to what fits in each catagory.

I agree with Djinn on this. Additionally, as a way to give a thumbs up towards the various contests that are run here on the forum, have a winner's circle where the winning class/monster/etc gets some accolades by either just an honorable mention with a link, or the actual class/monster/etc in question.

I personally love the contests that are run, so this'd be welcomed.

Also as for Articles, for the last half a dozen or so Dragon Magazines that were 3.5 relevant, the class acts were changed to specific categories: Arcane, Psionic, Divine, Cunning, etc.. Perhaps something along those lines, every issue?

Hasn't the whole "Magazine" thing fallen through at least twice already? Know it did once. Then again, y'all have some momentum, and maybe just making the releases irregular/regular (whichever wasn't tried before) would help.

Jotun kind of started, but it never got any momentum because there was no organization and it was on Google Docs, which some people don't want to sign up for. It also didn't have a coherent issue, which was a problem, considering it was supposed to be a monthly magazine.

I'm not sure about other magazine names or anything, but I remember there being another effort...that might just be me, though.

Here, each magazine will be open to everyone on the boards, we have some people willing and able to do the work, and it's something we all want to happen. Plus, the homebrew we'll be featuring won't necessarily be new, so we'll always have something to work with.

EDIT: Fifty-three names are up on the permissions list now. Nice. :smallcool:

Alright, aside from the contest winners, I think the only staples should be Prestige Classes, Base Classes, a theory article series (I'll volunteer), the designer interview, and the contest winners. Things like feats, spells, disciplines, and the like we'd either need people willing to produce material for if we run out, or not do every issue.

For Feats and Spells, could always just do what they did in the Drag-Mags, where they either had a section for a specific group of feats/spells, or snuck it in with Articles where they would already fit. (Example of this would be sneaking in improved versions of Fighter-based feats with Fighter Fixes.)

Agreed.

Step-by-step homebrewing could be an idea for the theory series...maybe at the end of each general category (base classes, prestige classes, feats, spells, etc.).

Does anybody have an idea for the name of the magazine? Phoenix might work. "Rising from the depths of the ashes of Dragon Magazine, Phoenix arrives!" Of course, we probably wouldn't use that, but hey. It's kind of funny/fun. :smallamused:

I'm curious as to how much organization has been determined yet. For example, what about separating fixes and original class ideas?

Another concern might be when two people create totally different things with the same name.

Debug/Redux Magazine.
Oerth Magazine.
Animated Magazine.
Meta-Magazine.

It'd be handled on a case-by-case basis, and we'd only have so many per magazine.

Another concern might be when two people create totally different things with the same name.
Usually there are people in the commenting of the Homebrew piece that say so. If it does come up, we'll just do what Djinn suggests, and ask them to rename.

I thought I'd make a "humorous" list at some point, which would include things like the birthday cake golem, the cheese golem, falling anvil, feats from the Ridiculous Feats thread, Turkeyzilla, etc.

Hurray Turkeyzilla!

As for names, I don't much like the idea of including the term 'Magazine' into the title, as I imagine we'll be producing this virtually, which makes it more E-Zineish. I think Phoenix is an excellent name, as would be reviving one of the previous homebrew release attempts' names, Footprints, which is simple and hearkens back to being originally a GitP production.

It could be a good feature, though it would be difficult to implement in just one issue. We'd have to divide it up through several issues so one [issue] wasn't just about that thread.

Your swashbuckler is alright, though it is a really good dip.

I'd make parry only available based on the number of attacks of opportunity you have per round, expending those attacks as you parry (grant Combat Reflexes at...3rd level?). That might just be me, though.

I'll look at the other.

Okay then. Here, one spoiler. I doubt that it'll be easier to read.

The Paladin revised to be a more competitive, higher tier class. There were several aims I had in mind when designing this fix.

The first was to make pure classing viable and competitive; I really wanted to give players compelling reasons to stick with the Paladin, rather than branching off/dipping into something else.

The second was to make the class itself viable and competitive overall, and decisively 3rd tier.

The third was to do the first and second in ways that were thematic and appropriate. Emphasizing the Paladin's iconic roles as a defender of the meek, and a slayer of evil I thought to be the best way of going about this, primarily by means of damage and resistance sharing, enhanced healing and anti-evil/undead capabilities. It wasn't about simply increasing the class' defensive capabilities so much as it was highlighting these design elements.

With the exception of these changes and new abilities, or where explicitly stated, it is otherwise identical:

New class skills: Jump, Climb

Skill Points at 1st Level:

(4 + Int modifier) ×4.

Skill Points at Each Additional Level:

4 + Int modifier.

High Saves: Fortitude, Will

Detect Evil (Su): As per the core class. However, the capabilities of the Paladin's Detect Evil improves over time as follows:

At the 7th class level, the Paladin gains the ability to gauge the nature of a subject's evil much more clearly, while the range of his eldritch insight expands. With a fourth round of study, the Paladin is able to determine whether or not the target detects as Evil due to Taint, arcane or profane energies (including spells and curses), personality and actions, and/or a subtype.
Finally, the range of Detect Evil increases by 30 feet plus 30 feet times the Paladin's Wisdom modifier (minimum 30 feet).

At the 11th class level, the Paladin's ability to Detect Evil becomes penetrating, shattering physical and mystical barriers alike to see through to the truth. The Paladin now makes an opposed caster level check using the total of his class level and Wisdom modifier as his caster level to penetrate illusions, spells and effects that obfuscate, redirect or block Detect Evil's alignment detection.
It furthermore is able pass through physical barriers much more effectively, penetrating two plus his Wisdom modifier (minimum 2) times the normal amount of material.

At the 17th class level, the Paladin's concentration and mastery of Detect Evil is such that he requires only one round of study to garner all information obtainable with it.

Smite Evil (Su): Instead of X uses per day, Smite Evil features X uses per encounter. Smites may also be made as ranged attacks. Smite Evil deals 2 times its normal bonus damage to Evil Outsiders and Undead. All damage dealt by Smite Evil counts as being Good aligned.

Lay on Hands (Su): Beginning at 2nd level, a paladin with a Charisma score of 12 or higher can heal wounds (her own or those of others) by touch. Each day she can heal a total number of hit points of lethal and/or non-lethal damage equal to her Paladin level × her Charisma bonus. A Paladin may choose to divide her healing among multiple recipients, and she doesn’t have to use it all at once. Using Lay on Hands is a Standard Action. A Paladin may convert a use of Turn Undead into a number of Healing points for Lay on Hands equal to his Paladin level x his Charisma bonus as a Free Action.

Alternatively, a Paladin can use any or all of this healing power to deal damage to undead creatures and evil outsiders. Using Lay on Hands in this way requires a successful melee touch attack and doesn’t provoke an attack of opportunity. The Paladin decides how many of her daily allotment of points to use as damage after successfully touching an undead creature or evil outsider. A Paladin cannot expend more Healing Points in this way than her Charisma modifier x her class level.

Beginning at the 6th class level, a Paladin can expend 10 hit points worth of Lay on Hands' healing power to remove one of the following conditions afflicting the touched target: dazzled, diseased, poisoned, fatigue, exhaustion, sickened or nauseated. Every 3 class levels beyond the sixth, the range of conditions that can be cured in this way is expanded. Unless stated otherwise, each condition requires 10 healing points to remove:

At the 9th class level Lay on Hands can remove ability damage, blindness, deafness and paralysis. Each point of ability damage costs 2 healing points to remove.

At the 12th class level Lay on Hands can remove the confused, cowering, frightened, dazed, fear, feebleminded, insanity, panicked, shakened and stunned conditions. Alternatively, the Paladin may invest 100 healing points to revive a fallen comrade as per the Raise Dead spell.

At the 15th class level Lay on Hands can remove ability drain and negative levels, and can act as a Break Enchantment spell with no maximum caster level, with a caster level equal to the Paladin's class level. Each point of ability drain costs 8 points to restore, and each negative level costs 16 points to restore. Alternatively, the Paladin may invest 200 healing points to revive a fallen comrade as per the Resurrection spell.

At the 18th class level, Lay on Hands can restore permanently drained levels at the cost of 50 healing points per drained level, and regenerate lost and severed body members as per the Regenerate spell, each body part requiring 50 healing points to regenerate. Alternatively, the Paladin may invest 800 healing points to revive a fallen comrade as per the True Resurrection spell, though he must possess some fragment of remains of the deceased to touch, and must expend either 500 XP per HD of the target to be revived or a valuable diamond component as per the spell, or be in current and immediate possession of a powerful holy artifact of his patron deity.

Aura of Courage (Ex):As the base class, but the aura benefits only non-evil allies (excluding the Paladin) within 5 + 5 x the Paladin's Charisma modifier feet (minimum 5 feet). Allies benefiting from the aura receive a bonus on all saves against Fear equal to the Paladin's Charisma modifier (minimum 1), up to a maximum equal to the Paladin's class level. Note that this portion of the ability is a supernatural effect.

Gift of the Martyr (Su):It is the sacred duty of every Paladin to protect the weak and assist those in need. To this end, the gods have granted him the ability to spiritually attune with his allies, and absorb their wounds and ailments as though they were his own. Beginning at the 3rd class level, the Paladin may attune to a number of creatures up to his class level. Attuning a single creature requires a Full Action, and the Paladin must be touching all creatures to be attuned for this duration. Once a creature is attuned, whenever it takes any damage or suffers any adverse effect, and is within 10 x class level feet of the Paladin, the Paladin may choose to redirect up to half the damage and/or effects to himself (all fractional amounts rounded up). Any effect that does not deal damage has up to a 50% chance of being transferred to the Paladin.

At the 10th class level, up to 75% of the damage received by the attuned can be transferred, and non-damaging effects received by the attuned have up to a 75% chance of being transferred.

At the 20th class level, up to 100% of the damage received by the attuned can be transferred, and non-damaging effects received by the attuned have up to a 100% chance of being transferred.

The exact percentage of damage and probability of an effect being transferred is at the Paladin's option. A Paladin may dismiss any attuning at his option as a Free Action, and must dismiss an attuning of his option should he attempt to attune to a new creature when he has attuned the maximum number of creatures his class level will allow, or the new attuning will fail. Only non-damaging effects that Lay on Hands can remove or cure (at any class level) may be transferred with Gift of the Martyr.

Argent Soul (Ex):The Paladin's soul becomes tempered with the steel of his faith, made aglow by the strength of his virtue, and impervious by the grace of his deity. Starting at the 4th class level, the Paladin gains Negative Energy, Profane and Vile Resistance 5. This resistance increases by 5 every 4 class levels.

Starting at 8th class level, the Paladin gains immunity to Ability Drain.

Starting at the 12th class level, the Paladin gains immunity to Death magic, and magical death effects.

Starting at the 16th class level, the Paladin gains immunity to Energy Drain.

Starting at the 20th class level, the Paladin gains immunity to Negative Energy effects and damage.

Non-evil allies (excluding the Paladin) within 5 + 5 x the Paladin's Charisma modifier feet (minimum 5 feet) receive a bonus on all saves against these effects equal to his Charisma modifier (minimum 1), and half of all Resistances bestowed by this ability (rounded up) up to a maximum equal to his class level. Note that this portion of the ability is a supernatural effect.

Divine Providence (Su):Starting at the 4th class level, the Paladin may expend a Turn Undead attempt to invoke the protection of his deity, gaining one of the following: Damage Reduction, Energy Resistance versus a damage type of his choice, or a bonus to his AC, SR, or all saves equal to the total of his class level and Charisma modifier as a Free Action. This ability can be used in response to any attack, spell, event or effect, but its use must be declared before any rolls are made.

If the Paladin chooses a bonus to his saves, and succeeds on any save that normally has a partial effect on a success, it instead has no effect. The Paladin may opt to roll 2d20 for any saving roll made while Divine Providence is active, selecting the outcome of his choice.

If the Paladin chooses a bonus to his AC or Damage Reduction, he also gains Fortification equal to his Paladin level x his Charisma modifier. Bonuses to AC gained in this way are effective versus all attack types, including Incorporeal and Touch attacks.

The effects of this ability last until the end of the Paladin's next turn.

Divine Aegis (Su):Starting at the 5th class level, the Paladin gains a bonus to his AC equal to the lesser of his Charisma modifier and class level. This AC bonus applies against incorporeal and touch attacks. Non-evil allies (excluding the Paladin) within 5 + 5 x the Paladin's Charisma modifier feet (minimum 5 feet) receive half of this bonus (rounded up).

Starting at the 15th class level, the Paladin gains Spell Resistance equal to 10 + his class level, + his Charisma modifier. Non-evil allies (excluding the Paladin) within 5 + 5 x the Paladin's Charisma modifier feet (minimum 5 feet) receive half of this Spell Resistance (rounded up).

By expending a Turn Undead attempt as a Free Action, the Paladin may increase the SR provided to his non-evil allies by an amount equal to his Charisma modifier (minimum 1), or the AC provided to his allies by an amount equal to half his Charisma modifier (round up, minimum 1) for one round per class level. The SR and AC granted by Divine Aegis to the Paladin's allies cannot ever exceed the amount it provides to the Paladin.

Aura of Beneficence (Su):Starting at the 5th class level, the aura of the Paladin becomes as a shining beacon to all who would rally against evil, and emits a continuous Protection Against Evil effect. Further, he is surrounded by a brilliant silver light, which sheds bright light for up to half the Paladin's class level + his Charisma modifier x 5 feet, and dim light for up to an additional half the Paladin's class level + his Charisma modifier x 5 feet (round up in all cases, with each area of illumination having a minimum 5 foot radius). The Paladin may expand, contract or dismiss this light as a Free Action. This light may even persist in magical darkness if the Paladin succeeds at an opposed caster level check, using his class level as his caster level.

Starting at the 10th class level, he emits a continuous Circle of Protection Against Evil effect.

Starting at the 20th class level, he emits a continuous Holy Aura effect. The DC of this effect is Charisma based.

While these emanations may be dispelled, the Paladin can simply reactivate them as a Free Action. The effective caster level of these emanations is equal to the Paladin's class level.

Remove Disease (Su): The Paladin does not gain the Remove Disease ability.

Indomitable Zeal (Ex):His mind and body alike made robust by the impenetrable armour of his conviction, the Paladin suffers no mortal weariness, predisposition to corrupting toxins, nor susceptibility to the rank temptations of bewitching magics. Starting at the 6th class level, the Paladin becomes immune to Poison (including supernatural and magical poisons), Exhaustion, and Fatigue, and gains the Endurance and Diehard feats, even if he does not meet their prerequisites.

Starting at the 12th class level, the Paladin may expend a Turn Undead attempt as an Immediate Action to bestow himself with a Delay Death effect, with a caster level equal to his class level.

Starting at the 18th class level, the Paladin becomes immune to Mind Affecting spells and abilities.

Such is the Paladin's inner strength and vitality that it radiates outwards from his being, a potent spiritual essence that infuses his allies with a measure of his divine resilience. Non-evil allies (excluding the Paladin) within 5 x the Paladin's Charisma modifier feet receive a bonus on all saves against Poison, Disease, Exhaustion, Fatigue and Mind Affecting spells and effects equal to his Charisma modifier (minimum 1) to a maximum equal to his class level. Note that this portion of the ability is a supernatural effect.

Blade of Virtue (Su): Starting at the 7th class level, the Paladin may expend uses of Turn Undead to imbue any single weapon with Light Generation and one of the following properties: Holy, Axiomatic, Ghost Touch, Disruption (this will work on Slashing or Piercing weapons), Merciful or an enhancement bonus equal to the total of the Paladin's class level and Charisma bonus / 4 versus Evil opponents (equivalent to a +1 bonus). In order to imbue a weapon with a given property, the Paladin must spend a number of Turn Undead attempts equal to its equivalent +X bonus. The light exuded by the weapon is a brilliant silver.

At the 10th class level, the Paladin may imbue his weapon with the Undead or Evil Outsider Bane properties.

At the 13th class level, the Paladin may imbue his weapon with the Brilliant Energy property. This form of the Brilliant Energy property works against Undead.

At the 16th class level, the Holy and Axiomatic properties become Holy and Axiomatic Burst, dealing an extra 1d10 points of Divine damage on a successful critical hit. If the weapon’s critical multiplier is ×3, add an extra 2d10 points of Divine damage instead, and if the multiplier is ×4, add an extra 3d10 points. Bows, crossbows, and slings so imbued bestow the Divine damage upon their ammunition.

At the 19th class level, the Paladin may imbue his weapon with a special property. This works as per the Vorpal property (including the cost of Vorpal property's X bonus. Further, non-slashing weapons can be imbued with it), but it only functions against Evil opponents, no critical hit confirmation is required, and doesn't work by decapitating, but by enveloping the Paladin's enemy in a conflagration of silver flames, thus rendering it effective even against those who are immune to critical hits (such as Undead). Those slain in this way are wholly consumed, leaving behind only their equipment and a small pile of fine, silvery dust. Enemies with more HD than the imbuer has class levels may make a Will save versus 10 + 1/2 the Paladin's class levels + the Paladin's Charisma modifier to only take 5d8 Divine damage instead.

For every 3 class levels beyond the 7th, when spending a Turn Undead attempt to imbue his weapon, the Paladin may imbue his weapon as if he had spent an additional Turn Undead attempt.

An imbued weapon retains all properties bestowed in this way for a number of minutes equal to the total of the imbuing Paladin's class level and Charisma modifier.

All properties imbued with this ability are only active and functional when used by the imbuing Paladin, though Evil creatures still receive 2 temporary negative levels while they attempt to use or handle any such imbued weapon. Undead and Evil Outsiders attempting to handle such a weapon receive these penalties in addition to 1d8 Divine damage times the total +X bonus of all imbued properties per round. Imbued properties do not overwrite existing ones; they are added to those the weapon possesses. Imbued properties do not stack with identical existing ones.

Greater Smite (Su) Beginning at the 4th class level, the Paladin's smites are empowered by the tested purity and growth of his faith, enabling him to cleave through virtually any defense with the fierce strength of his convictions, allowing him to bypass any Damage Reduction or resistances of an Evil aligned opponent.

Beginning at the 8th class level, the Paladin's hand is guided by the divine to seek out his foe. Smite Evil automatically ignores all Concealment and miss chances against Evil targets.

Beginning at the 14th class level, the Paladin adds his class level to the attack rolls of his smites, while adding his Charisma modifier to their damage rolls. Further, he rolls 2d20 for his Smite Evil attack roll, selecting the outcome of his choice.

Beginning at the 20th class level, the Paladin's smites act to instantly and utterly destroy any undead and evil outsiders (even if the outsider is beyond its native plane, it will be permanently killed) it strikes unless they succeed at a Will save equal to 10 + Class Level / 2 + Charisma modifier, enveloping them in a dazzling gout of disintegrating brilliant silver light. Any undead or evil outsider killed or destroyed by Smite Evil in this way is obliterated as per the Disintegrate (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/disintegrate.htm)spell, leaving behind only a trace of fine, silvery dust while its equipment is unaffected.

Scouring Light (Su):[/bStarting at the 10th class level, the Paladin may unleash a brilliant silver beam or burst of purifying divine energy at a target at the cost of one of his Turn or Smite Evil attempts as a Standard Action. This beam is delivered as a Ranged Touch Attack, and has a range equal to 20 feet, plus 20 feet per point of the Paladin's Charisma modifier, with a minimum range of 20 feet.

Upon striking a target, the beam acts as a targeted Greater Dispel Magic with a caster level equal to the Paladin's class level, plus his Charisma modifier, and no maximum caster level on the dispel check. Evil targets are furthermore dealt 1d8 Divine damage per point of the Paladin's Charisma modifier and for every two class levels, and must succeed on a Will save against a DC of 10 + 1/2 the Paladin's character level + the Paladin's Charisma modifier or be stunned for a number of rounds equal to the Paladin's Charisma modifier (for a minimum of 1 round). On a successful save, the target is dazzled instead for an equivalent period. Undead and Evil Outsiders receive twice this damage.

The burst mode conjures a brief vertical column of silver light that envelops a cylindrical area with a radius equal to 5 feet, plus the Paladin's Charisma modifier (minimum 5 feet) and a height four times that of the radius. All creatures within are subject to an area dispel version of Greater Dispel Magic as per the targeted version above. Evil creatures receive damage as per the targeted version above / 2. Undead and Evil Outsiders receive twice this amount. Further, Evil targets within the area of effect must make a successful Will save against a DC of 10 + 1/2 the Paladin's character level + the Paladin's Charisma modifier or be stunned as above for half the number of rounds (minimum 1 round). On a successful save, the target is dazzled instead for an equivalent period, and the damage that would be dealt to it by Scouring Light is halved.

Either version of Scouring Light may be channeled through a weapon held by the Paladin as a Swift Action. A creature successfully struck by a weapon channeling Scouring Light suffers its effects as above, with the burst version of this ability centred on that creature. Hitting a creature in this way completely discharges Scouring Light, thus its effects do not apply to any further attacks made, unless reapplied as another Swift Action.

Any creature killed or destroyed by Scouring Light in any form (even when channeled as part of a melee attack) is obliterated as per the Disintegrate (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/disintegrate.htm)spell, leaving behind only a trace of fine, silvery dust while its equipment is unaffected. Evil Outsiders slain by Scouring Light, even if not on their native plain are completely and irrevocably destroyed.

[b]Celestial Mount (Ex):Beginning at the 11th class level, the Paladin's mount gains the Celestial template. Further, the mount or its equivalent, requires only an Immediate Action to call.

If your mount, or mount equivalent cannot have, or already has the Celestial template applied to it, or otherwise would not benefit from the Celestial template, you may summon it one additional time per day.

Some of these need finishing, editing, PEACHing, or all of the above, but I'd like to submit these:

The Witch Doctor (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=119851) (in need of the last few Brews)

The Harrowed (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=118467) (In need of feats. Lots of feats. Some of which are owed to me by Djinn)

The Revised Hexblade (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=7775865#post7775865) (in need of Curses)

The Color Wheel Alignment System (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=157001) (not technically in need of anything, but I didn't finish a lot of the support stuff).

I just noticed this list doesn't have either of Seguile Daengz's homebrew.

The Fearnaught. Kill. Shatter. Defy. HAPPY TIME! (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147840)
The Romancer - 'cause you don't have to be great to be a HERO! (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=6656332)

Apart from the creativity of the classes themselves, they should both be included at least for their raw comedic value.

I think that kind of thing would be perfect, perhaps add a list of those kinds of articles to the first posts?

I don't think we'd have any trouble getting articles on homebrewing and gaming theory, most people probably just don't have much of a reason to write them.

The Vorpal Tribble has held back permission for now, since he's seen so many projects like this fail before, including Footsteps.

On the campaign setting idea, Octopus Jack: You mean theory on the creation of worlds, kind of like the Giant's articles (The New World) in the "Gaming" section (left side)?

Djinn: Again, I'd be happy to help with those homebrew theory articles if you have something specific you'd like help with.

Also, thanks, Kyuubi. You didn't have to do that, but it does make it less annoying for me.

Alright. I'm going to assume we're running with Phoenix as the current working title. Tonight and tomorrow I'll draw up a rough draft of a name/logo design, and maybe a page design if I have the time.

I also suggest we begin narrowing our selection down to 1-2 base classes (2 if simple, 1 if there's a whole new rules system or something of the sort) along a similar theme and 3-4 PrCs along a different yet internally consistent theme of sorts (even if that theme is "martial prestige classes" or "wizard PrCs"). I'm also looking for a fairly well known homebrewer (ErrantX, The Demented One, Krimm...and so on. A big name, at least for the first issue) who'd be willing to be interviewed for the issue. Maybe grab one very well done revision while we're at it.

We'll then know a general direction for the two big draws of the issue (the class sections), and can figure out where our feats, articles, and other things will go.

My suggestions, as of the current moment.

Interview with ErrantX, who has volunteered himself.
Realm of Chaos' Gambit Fighter: people have mentioned liking it, and it's an impressive piece of work.
Kellus' Sagittarius class.
The Demented One's Warrior Poet class.
The Demented One + Krimm Blackleaf's Warheart Item system.

My picks for classes, at least. Not sure on the PrCs, or even the theme of PrCs, but something besides generally martial might be good. Sorc/Wiz PrCs, perhaps...or Rogue-like PrCs. Spells/Feats and such I don't know yet.

Edit: Also, Djinn: I like it. Does it keep up its aesthetic if its reduced in size?

That said, if you can get me a sharper font for the logo (I'm just using Optima and, while it works, I'd like to explore other options). They're from dafont.com. The one for Astral Mage is called Chocolate Box (http://www.dafont.com/search.php?q=chocolate+box&nb_ppp_old=10&page=1&text=Astral+Mage&nb_ppp=10&psize=m&classt=alpha). The one for the Disciple I'll try to find again, and will edit when I do.

EDIT: Alfred Drake (http://www.dafont.com/font.php?file=alfred_drake&page=1&nb_ppp_old=10&text=Fellheart+Disciple&nb_ppp=10&psize=m&classt=alpha) is the font for the Disciple.

Be careful what fonts you use from there. Most say Free or Shareware, but some are "Free for Personal Use" only. They have a pay-to-use font section, too, but there's thousands of free ones that are well done.

While I probably won't default to that, I must admit...you're pretty damn good.

However, you'll see that I have a careful aesthetic going here...here's the newest (and final) draft of the cover page, as well as a random page blank (currently in beta). An important consideration for anything I ask you for is how it'll look against that background, and surrounded by those colors. Unless, of course, we want to vary the background depending on the article...but, since I'm doing this for free with no real prospect of every seeing a nickle for my work, I don't want to have to make a new mock-up for each new creation.

Can do. I'll shrink that border a bit and bear the swapping pages in mind...I've got a bunch more to make anyway.

Edit: Actually, can you shrink that margin a tiny bit? I'd like enough room to show off the patterns a bit, and we do need a bit of a gap between the bar and the word. I'll shrink it, but I'm not sure how much I can give you before the result compromises the artistic layout. I'll see what I can do and report back.

Maybe have that border be the outside border of the page, and have the page number in some sort of shape at the bottom? Just a thought. Otherwise, as an inside border it could get lost if the magazine is ever printed and stapled/bound like a book.

That sample page is a good one to start off an article or chapter with... but I would remove all graphics except for the side border for other pages

I would also make a small pheonix icon we can end each article with like a period at the end of the last sentence.

Done and done. Basically, I had imagined that page would start off a class: it'd have the class name above it, and the creator below it. Individual sections (those that are major staples of the publication) would have a page with a bigger header and an introduction to that month's work, before using that page to start off each class, for example.

You could also try a fiery transition fading to transparency instead of a hard line between the border and the page.

... and possibly have a solar flare type of graphic that lunges from the border and into the page as background behind the title.

Tried it. You lose it amongst the parchment texture, and it makes the Phoenix blend in to much. The strong edge is much better for this purpose.

That said, I think I got it below .5", but I can't be sure, as I'm working at 300dpi, which is print quality, and it means my screen dimensions aren't 100% reliable.

I would try using Word (I have Microsoft Office 2003) to help you size your images to fill the entire bounds of an 8.5 x 11 page.

http://andion-isurand.webs.com/Agent_Arcanist2.pdf

I'm using Helvetica font size 9 atm, but of course, this is just a sample.

My columns are set to 3.6" wide with 0.3" inches between each one for a total of 7.5" wide text area.

Looks very solid. I'd recommend an actual table if we can wrangle a nicely formatted one, as 20 level classes without a table can get a little confusing. I'd also like to request a shrink to the gap in between the columns, because I could really use some of that space...it currently fits between my border (on the version on my computer: the updated one), but only just. Shrinking that middle column by a tiny bit would give it a much nicer appearance.

Also grab the Optima font if you can. That's what I'm using for titles, so if you can arrange the title and creator to fit on the class name on the top of the line and the creator just below it (probably using text boxes...I'm not sure you can do it without them), that would be excellent. Helvetica works fine for the body text, but I'd like the titles in Optima if you can manage it.

Word has shading, but you'll have to manually select every other row and go to Borders and Shading unless you can find some other way to automate it.

As far the table is concerned, I could try putting in a white background for some of the cells, that alternates with the background image coming through.

I got something so far using the inital sample image you put up Djinn.

So this one just shows how the original sample doesn't line up with the modified margins.

http://andion-isurand.webs.com/Agent_Arcanist3.pdf

what you dont see is that if it is tiled, it doesn't cover the whole word document... and this image was stretched to fit the page

pdf creator doesn't catch images inserted as a background (my other two don't either)
this image had to be pasted in and set behind the text

it might be easier just to use a solid parchment background and insert a pheonix logo title bar gif as its own image, unattached to the background

Hi guys, just popping in to say it's awesome that you guys are collaborating to make the Phoenix Magazine, and that I'm honoured to have my name appear in the list of homebrewers.

I have a quick question about how you guys will handle the image representation of the classes and PrCs that will appear in the book. I think credit should be given to the artists who drew them (or at least have the source for the image cited), even though the book is going to be non-profit.

For my part, I'll provide the source for the images that I used for my homebrews (in case the images will be included in the class entry).

The art depicted in the Tatooed Monk (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=6114857#post6114857) homebrew is an official Wizards art that appeared in one of their 3.5 books (I can't remember which one off the top of my head). Uh, I guess that one can be used without really citing where it came from :smalltongue:

The art I used in the Sin Knight (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=6151468#post6151468) entry is drawn by an artist on Pixiv. Since you need an account to access the site, I'll put up a link to the artist's other website (which seems defunct, but will be a start for a reference) located here (http://drawr.net/misshu2). The artist's alias is "miche", or "みちぇ" in hiragana.

Good luck with the book, everyone!

Hi Pramxnim! Loved the Sin Knight. I'm using it in a Gestalt Campaign and its amazing.

As for Art for the Homebrew, the decision was made that we'd avoid copying and re-hashing images that have already been made. Instead, we're having people draw up things for them. Namely me, for the time being.

If there's any image in your head that you want to represent the Sin Knight (Avoiding the one that you used already), please tell me before it comes up to be drawn.

Here, I was just able to create this using OpenOffice: My sample newsletter page (http://drop.io/PhoenixMag/asset/newslettersample-pdf-2). (You'll have to download it, as I have no way of directly hosting it)

I just made everything one big table with lots of splits and merges to account for the side border and the top image.

EDIT: If you downloaded before 11:13 EST, I added table background colors and resized it to be printer-friendly, so re-download.

Looks good, although IMO... PrCs wouldn't normally be put into a article/chapter title slot like that, since articles usually have names seperate from any PrCs they have to show.

Also, this was just his inital sample, and in looking at the relevant books and magazines, the margins are usually more or less the same on either side.

IMO... I think we should make title images for each article that are not part of the standard background, but are inserted seperately.

A small part of me thinks we should try this without a full background, and just have a plain white backing... save for the title graphics, included images, and perhaps a small phoenix near each page number in the footer... making the print job easier for the average user.

Oh, this is a special request, but...

Could someone try and Homebrew a Prestige Class based off:
- Paladin or Cleric levels (Leaning more towards Paladin)
- Combat-oriented with support magic (Probably by advancing existing divine spellcasting)
- Devoted to St. Cuthbert
- And Dual Optioned-ish. Has two sides to it (Justice/Vindication), with a combat focus on either Defense (Justice) or Offense (Vindication).

Its odd, but I'm clueless as how to start this.

Perhaps the offensive options let you do additional dice of Damage against anyone who has attacked you?

Perhaps the Defensive Options make your enemies not want to hit you because you mirror a percentage of the damage back at them?

Have it lose a caster level at 1st level, and maybe one at the last level if the capstone is good.

And what would be a good capstone? Something Like a choice between:

True Justice (Su): Whenever damage is dealt to the Justiciar, St. Cuthbert smites the fool who would dare to assault one of his most trusted champions. Whenever the Justiciar takes damage, He only takes 75% of it. The character who attacked him takes 25% of the damage as force damage. No save.

Ultimate Vindication (Su): The God of Retribution empowers his Champion's attacks if they are made in an attempt at revenge. The Justiciar gains a +10 Divine Bonus to hit and +10d6 force damage on all attacks against any target that has damaged him in the past 10 Rounds.

If Cuthbert is the God of Retribution, these seem about right flavorwise too.

Hmm, it's been so long that I don't have a clear idea what the Sin Knight should look like. I picked the image for the contest since it is evocative of the nature of the sin the character represented, while still showing a warrior. I would like to present Raven Blackheart again, if possible (that is, if you guys are including my horrendously text-heavy sample encounter), only this time with more of a roguish angle rather than a temptress one (which is what the former art seemed like to me). Feel free to take out any details in that statblock that seem too long or unnecessary (like the whole possessions section).

Sure. This is a right-hand page, and I think the margins are better this time around. Also, bear in mind...with the old format, a Word Document will pretty much need to be based on Text Boxes, rather than standard formatting. You're making a template, not just typing. It should work with text boxes.

if it really becomes an issue is it that much trouble to just provide a 'printer firendly' version? Get rid of the parchment look so the pages are plain white with your little sidebar thingie in greyscale and possibly sans extra imagery?

Not that i'd ever completely discredit the convenience of having printouts, generally if i ever I need access to information from books anyway i use a laptop and pdfs anyway. And i'm sure i'm not alone.

This way you'll get the aesthetically pleasing digital copy and the pertinent information that won't risk your budget on ink for those who want to take a hardcopy somewhere.

A Saint's Path: Choose one of the following powers. As more levels are gained in the class, these abilities are added onto others.
Justice: You may choose a number of targets up to your Wisdom Modifier. All of these targets must be within 60 ft. If you receive a spell with the [Healing] Descriptor, all of these targets are affected as well. For example, a Justiciar selects this ability active on the wounded party wizard. The Cleric then casts Cure Light Wounds on the Justiciar and rolls a total of 8 hp cured. Both the Justiciar and the Wizard gain 8 hp.
Vindication: A number of times per day equal to the Justiciar's Class level, He may execute a special chaining attack as a standard action. First, he makes an attack roll against his first Target. He gains +1d6 Holy damage per class level to this attack. If this attack hits, it immediately arcs to another Opponent of the Justiciar's choosing within 30 ft of the first target. It deals half damage to the second target. The attack can arc a number of times equal to the Justiciar's Charisma Bonus (Minimum 1), each time dealing half as much damage and jumping to another target within 30 ft of the previous target. Each target is only affected once. If there are no new targets within range, the chain ends. The Justiciar instantly moves within 5 ft of the final target, drawing no attacks of opportunity.

A Saint's Road: Improved A Saint's Path. Choose the appropriate ability.
Justice: The Justiciar and all of his allies affected by his shared healing ability gain a Divine Bonus to AC equal to the Justiciar's Class Level.
Vindication: The Justicar gains a bonus to attack and damage Rolls equal to his class level. In addition, If the first target of the Justiciar's Chain Attack is Chaotic Evil, the Justiciar automatically deals a Critical hit on each target. The normal rules otherwise apply.

A Saint's Destination:
Justice: Whenever damage is dealt to the Justiciar, St. Cuthbert smites the fool who would dare to assault one of his most valued champions. Whenever the Justiciar takes damage, He only takes 75% of it. The character who attacked him takes 25% of the damage as force damage. If the damage was not caused by an "attacker," (Such as in the case of a trap) this ability is not activated.
Vindication: The God of Retribution empowers his Champion's attacks if they are made in an attempt at revenge. The Justiciar gains +10d6 force damage on all attacks against any target that has damaged him in the past 10 Rounds. Furthermore, any weapon the Justiciar wields gains the [Good] and [Law] Descriptors.

Ah. No wonder. Apparently the fill option on Word is buggy...on mine, if I hit fill, I get just a 2-inch square from the upper left, expanded to fill the entire page. You need to put it in another way, or somehow make a transparent text PDF and stick the image behind it.

In my mind the Justice tree was able to select a number of allies based off of either Class Level or Wisdom Modifier and grant various protection abilities. (Split Damage, shared healing, misc..) He'd gain more abilities like this as he progressed through the level. He'd also gain some bonus to AC and a form of DR to most anything. Possibly some resistance. But it'd have to be based off of some ability modifier or class level.

The Vindication tree would be some sort of splinter damage effect, doing [X] amount of damage and [X - Y] to secondary target who was near the first target. Possibly get Cleave/Great Cleave if he didn't already have it, and if he did, some advancement on it.

Something like that could be done. The idea behind the two abilities that I came up with was that St. Cuthbert, as the God of Retribution and Justice, would aid his champion through exactly that. I'm probably going to keep that as the Capstone, but there is no reason not to use more traditional powerups.

In OpenOffice, it worked fine for me without being glitchy using the image as a background. I didn't use text boxes, though. It's all a big table, and there's blank "spacer" rows and columns. If anyone has OO, here is the document (http://drop.io/PhoenixMag/asset/newslettertemplate-odt) before I exported it as a PDF.

Hm. I have OO, but it's on the other partition of my computer. Do you have a shot of the PDF itself so we can see how it came together?

I'd also be honoured if my stuff gets used, so of course you have my permission if it ever feels right to publish any of it in this magazine. :smallwink: I'm especially proud of my dabblemaster (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=8919949) base class and my Pungeon Pendragon (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=156726) ToB discipline based around Truenaming.

As Timotei (I believe) mentioned, the top section would probably be for the article title rather than the item's name. Then again, you could keep it as is and the article name could go at the top and to the side where the decorative border is.

Actually, I intended the item name to go there (or collection name, for things like spellbooks). It helps to distinguish them. The creator's name will go just below the line.

Basically, it is indeed where an article header would go...but for things like classes and PrCs, there won't really be an article: just an introductory page and then the classes themselves, meaning each class gets its own header like that. I was thinking either a fancy section header filling the dead space above the class name, or a dividing page that just has a fancy logo and says Prestige Classes or something similar.

Edit: Or a splash page for the section, and then put the section somewhere in the header, in fairly small text. That might be the most elegant.

Have you two slept at all?

That is only a beta draft, using the Arcanist as a test class. Neither the formatting nor the page itself is completely finalized and, to my knowledge, the class has not been thoroughly examined for faults yet. We're mainly just testing the programs.

So no...nowhere near final.

I can already see it occurring a bit, so I thought I'd bring it up. Since this thread seems to be mostly about how to lay out the magazine and decision-making discussions, posts where somebody says something along the lines of "Everybody really loved this thing I made, can we include it?" are interjectory at best and risk getting lost by the time we are ready for content.

Maybe we need a "Nominations and Considerations" sort of thread, so that when the time comes, our Content Managers can evaluate the nominations? Or should we just request that people hold off on this sort of thing until the request for content is made in this thread? Or are we effectively spotting the nominations as they are put across?

For example, as a mechanics person, am I supposed to go here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=164928) and simply say, "the mechanics all make sense and add up," or "the mechanics all make sense, add up, and are relatively balanced?"

English means you'll proofread and fix errors in language, punctuation, and wording.

Fluff means you'll help write articles and fill in any missing fluff in homebrew with the help of the creator (though it's unlikely that we'll take anything without fluff).

Mechanics means you'll look at homebrew and make sure it functions as it's intended to and everything works like it should. If the skill points per level says 5 + Int modifier, you should probably point out that it should be 4 + Int modifier or 6 + Int modifier, justification or no. If a save DC is off, say it. That kind of stuff. You can do this in the thread you linked to, yes.

Zom B
2010-08-21, 10:17 AM
The people with "mechanics" and "survey" in their description (top of this page) will be looking at homebrew as it is suggested and weeding out the things that don't quite fit the bill.

Of course, if something is really cool, but has odd or bad mechanics, we'll be asking the creator if we can collaborate with them to change it.

http://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab221/phoenix_mag/FinalRightPage.pnghttp://i866.photobucket.com/albums/ab221/phoenix_mag/FinalLeftPage.png

Purposes should be fairly obvious. The Class/Collection/Sub-Section page is used for things like grouped spellbooks, classes, PrCs, and so forth that are self-contained, but part of a larger section of the magazine.

The flame side-bar always goes to the outside of the page (the binding is on the non-decorated side).

Mental defensive combat options (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3433934&postcount=1) are house ruled options for those that need help with Will saves more than AC. Ignore the bit about Reflex saves, as I suppose that's a typo or a "forgot-my-books" instance. By DracoDei.

Feats as other feats (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8979680&postcount=1) is a thread of feats considered the equals of other feats for certain purposes (As Expeditious Dodge is to Dodge, Battle Casting is to Combat Casting.). By DaTedinator.

The Tome of Battle extravaganza (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7683585&postcount=1), also by DaTedinator, is, as the name suggests, for martial adepts. There's a lot of cool material in there.

Greater totem barbarians (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=157302) are by Admiral Squish, and there are a lot. I suspect that if we put the totems in Phoenix, we'll have to put between two and five in every issue.

The favored guardian (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4048924&postcount=1) is a prestige class for those who want to defend their allies (and themselves) very well by both mundane and magical means. By Krimm_Blackleaf.

The thalassic witch (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7065999&postcount=4) is cool. Note that many of the domains listed are homebrew, so we'd have to include them before we include this class. By Krimm_Blackleaf.

The warped angel (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=76209) is another prestige class fitting with the redeemed/fallen theme. By Krimm_Blackleaf.

The white necromancer (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=93644), which is, again, by Krimm, is a good necromancer. It's not incredibly unique, though the flavor is cool.

The dragontouched (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3058818&postcount=1) are a race of...dragontouched people. By Krimm_Blackleaf.

Penitent (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7953393&postcount=4), refined (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7953401&postcount=5), fallen (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7953389&postcount=3), and deranged (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7953384&postcount=2) again. By Krimm_Blackleaf.

Variant domain powers (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5102591&postcount=1) by Krimm are much more interesting than their ordinary counterparts.

Daer'Ragh's spellbook (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5486545&postcount=1) could be a small addition to the spellbook section.

Obviously, there's a lot more, but those are some ideas.

Dwarves: An excercise in drawing beards.

Not bad. I'd make the nose bent/broken, but that's just me, and I can't draw very well, so...good job. :smallamused:

It just occurred to me that it would make sense for his nose to be somewhat bashed. I mean, its a Dwarf. Where would you hit it?

It also just dawned on me. I was drawing this for... the Gambit Fighter... right...?

Right. Here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140278), in case you don't want to look on the list.

The fighter can be very versatile, so whatever you draw, just include a weapon (bastard sword?) and make him look like a warrior. Since they can wear a lot of different types of armor and still be effective with all of them, the armor type doesn't really matter. Medium or heavy would probably work better, though.

I was planning on having him having a Bladed Gauntlet in his left hand and a Shield in his right.

Any ideas for armor? If not, I'm gonna go with Scale Mail.

I'd go with whatever you're wanting/willing to draw for it man. This is a project for fun and to share our creative efforts. I'd be stoked if someone drew a custom piece of art for my works, even if I had little to no input on it.

Five minutes in and my hand is on fire. Scale Mail sucks. :smallfrown:

ErrantX: A lot of your stuff is going in, so do you have any ideas on what some of the stuff should look like? Whether it be Maneuver in use or a person heavily focusing on one of the disciplines? Nothing has come up yet, but it wouldn't hurt to start coming up with ideas.

I hope Realm of Chaos likes it.

Do we even have a cohesive list as to what exactly is going into the first issue? Has that been decided? Whomever is proceeding over this project have an idea?

We don't. I'm waiting for a few others to say, "Oh, yeah, that looks awesome. Let's add that" to my suggestions...or the opposite.

All I know is, the gambit fighter and the sin knight are going in.

Then I think someone needs to step up and just claim that they are the Editor In Chief in this project or something. Temotei, as you've been doing that right along, I see no reason for you to not make the final say, or ask two people who you regard highly in this project (say Djinn and Cardea) to make the final cuts.

Not a bad idea. It'd probably be better to have two people deciding what to put in as a final decision, with others suggesting material as they see fit (basically, what we're doing now, but slightly more structured and I'll make a list of definite additions and later additions).

You at lead with two people helping, pick from submissions or just personal favorites, and put it together. It's definitely doable, and the best part is, this stuff writes itself!

Right. Here's my call. Temotei, give me a revised list of your favorites, and I'll cut mine from that.

We're dropping the themed class and prestige class sections...it's obviously to much work with the number of people we have. Instead, we'll do a selection of strong classes/PrCs each time, and run out themed areas in other sections of the magazine. I think this will flow a lot better.

Will do. I'll not include any of my homebrew (humility and all that), so if you like any of that, you'll have to look at it in my signature.

I hope Realm of Chaos likes it.

I'm sure that I will.

Also, a small possible suggestion (sorry if I'm stepping out of line here :smallfrown:). As ErrantX is helping out, why not incorporate the PrC contests in some way? You could, for example, take the winner and runner up from a contest and pair it up with a class (base or PrC) with the same theme from another source to make an article.

You'd still need permission from the posters, of course, but it should work relatively well otherwise...

That's an ongoing plan, actually.

This first issue should take a while...once we get it running, others should be easier. Apologies for the delay.

Hmm, I have an idea for a feature. I don't know how many other boards or threads he frequents, but Curmudgeon is our resident Rain Man of the Rules. Maybe we could have something like how Dungeon had "Sage Advice?" If he wants to do it, we could work it that either he answers rules questions from submitters, or maybe he could pick selected Q&As from our board that might be entertaining and/or pertinent to the average gamer. Or a mixture of both, and probably more of the second at first.
