View Full Version : A tree fell on my house

So I get a call friday 13th when I was working at a summer camp that one of the oak trees around my house had fallen over. Though luckily, no one was injured and the only part of the house damaged on the inside was my room (Naturally). The tree itself looked healthy and everything before the fall, but now we see that it was completely dead and rotted in the middle with several plants growing inside of it. We think the roots of these plants forced it open. The way the tree fell made it fall right between my house and our neighbors house with the exception of a few braches damaging the roof (And punching holes and cracks into my room). Had the tree fallen 90 degrees different, it would have landed on my neighbors house and my house dead on (It split right in 2), most likely killing my parents and my neighor's parents.

All in all though, it was really lucky and quite a suprise.

Let me first point out the beautiful range in responses here:
"I'm sorry, that sucks!" "THIS IS ORC CONSPIRACY" "Do haz photos?"

And now let me say that I am sorry. Just be happy nobody was hurt, man, eh?

Dang! Happy you survived.
The city chopped down the dead tree hovering over my room. No natural shade but I'll live... literally.

Once had the tree across from me fall over. It made a big bang, and when I looked out the window, there was a tree that had fallen *just* a little bit to the side of parallel across the street, and crushed the fence next to us. Because of the way my house is built, if it had fallen a bit to the left, it would have come crashing through my mum's office, and possibly through the bedroom directly above it where I was. It also totalled a car.

This is because of global warming. CEASE YOUR SINNING WAYS AND REPENT!

*ahem* It's good to hear that the damage is not too bad; I certainly hope you can get repairs done on your room shortly. Alternatively: I guess you can sleep in a *puts sunglasses* treehouse from now on.

Eeeeek!!! My tree did something Similar, but the whole tree didn't fall (only one of thoe huge branches connected to other branches. It didn't even go near the house). Poor, Poor Silverraptor :smalleek:. I hope the damage was minimal.

In Soviet Russia, house fall on tree.

Given shoddy construction of houses in Soviet Russia, that one's actually true.

You mean they were created leaning against trees, so that they could fall on them? Or was the construction so bad that they were somehow able to fall up? The architect's name wasn't B. S. Johnson, was it?

Dude this sucks. i'm always worried about this in storms, cause my house is in the middle of 10 acres of woods. I hope the damage wasn't to bad and you get everything fixed up pretty quickly.

Totally off topic, but Bergholt Stuttley sounds like a really good name for a cheese...

That's scary. We have a huge tree in the yard. Been wondering (quite often) about what would happen if it fell - but mostly jokingly, because it's useful for shadow and for hiding the ugly neighbors' houses from our view. It looks strong, but now I'll keep thinking if it's rotting on the inside.

Great, now let's see if I can sleep tonight.

A useful tip for checking if your tree is alive: give the tree a small cut. If the inside is green then it's alive, if it isn't then CUT IT DOWN.

P.S. Sorry for your loss dude.

P.P.S And on Friday the 13th...:smalleek:

Okay, firstly, sorry for the damage that it caused. Glad no one got hurt (except for that poor house...no one cares about the house! :smallfrown:).

To put this in a different light, let's look at our little friends that may have caused this. No, not wee little fairies, the plants growing inside the tree. If you think about it, isn't it mind blowing that, in the wierdest places, life can grow like that? And that that life is so powerful, that it can topple over an oak tree. I mean, think about it for a second. Imagine the energy that must have took to have done that.

Okay, philosophical lecture over. Just thought about that, and thought to share that with the internet.

Thanks everyone. Oh, and by the way, I live in California and it's illegal to cut down an oak because it's endangered. We can trim it back, but we can't cut it down. The insurance guy said that there should be an exception to the law if the tree is sick like how ours was since it could kill someone, but ya we have to let it fall on its own.
