I could have sworn tat prepared casters could prepare a spell in a higher level slot than its spell level without having Heighten Spell. (at no benefit other than having another copy of it prepared) Likewise, I thought Sorcerers could do the same with their spells per day, using every spell per day to cast read magic, for example.

However, I cannot for the life of me find the rule that says one can do this.

Can one do this? Is there a rule somewhere?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Just remember that while you can prepare/cast from it, you treat it as its original spell level, not heightened.

PHB 178: top of the second column under "spell slots."

I don't know where tht rule is listed, but i think it was in the PHB some place. And i also remember thinking that it worked that way, because at some point i think i had a level 20 sorc with all magic missles

Which, in my opinion, is just a stupid feat tax.
